Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the exhibition itself and the book on the extensive Bonn retrospective of the Biennale participants (solo show in the German Pavilion 2009) have a number of surprises in store. Above all, the book provides a comprehensive overview - compiled by Liam Gillick himself - of the artist's work, which has accumulated in the past few years to number well in excess of 2,000 works for solo shows and participations. The central motifs of Liam Gillick's works become apparent in the wide-ranging exhibition, but above all in this book. Be it in texts, sculptures, or installations, Liam Gillick's quest has continually been something of a causal chain that investigates concepts such as utopia, parallelism, space, time, production in terms of their differences. In so doing, the artist isn't merely concerned with the conditions for production and the resulting aesthetic approach, but rather he seems - as the successor of a radical modernity - to be still searching for a real place for utopia. Exh.: Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der BRD, Bonn, 1 April - 8 August 2010.
Book Synopsis Art, Design and Capital since the 1980s by : Bill Roberts

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines artists’ engagements with design and architecture since the 1980s, and asks what they reveal about contemporary capitalist production and social life. Setting recent practices in historical relief, and exploring the work of Dan Graham, Rita McBride, Tobias Rehberger and Liam Gillick, Bill Roberts argues that design is a singularly valuable lens through which artists evoke, trace and critique the forces and relations of production that underpin everyday experience in advanced capitalist economies.

Book Synopsis Industry and Intelligence by : Liam Gillick
Download or read book Industry and Intelligence written by Liam Gillick and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of modern art is often told through aesthetic breakthroughs that sync well with cultural and political change. From Courbet to Picasso, from Malevich to Warhol, it is accepted that art tracks the disruptions of industrialization, fascism, revolution, and war. Yet filtering the history of modern art only through catastrophic events cannot account for the subtle developments that lead to the profound confusion at the heart of contemporary art. In Industry and Intelligence, the artist Liam Gillick writes a nuanced genealogy to help us appreciate contemporary art's engagement with history even when it seems apathetic or blind to current events. Taking a broad view of artistic creation from 1820 to today, Gillick follows the response of artists to incremental developments in science, politics, and technology. The great innovations and dislocations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have their place in this timeline, but their traces are alternately amplified and diminished as Gillick moves through artistic reactions to liberalism, mass manufacturing, psychology, nuclear physics, automobiles, and a host of other advances. He intimately ties the origins of contemporary art to the social and technological adjustments of modern life, which artists struggled to incorporate truthfully into their works.
Download or read book Erasmus is Late written by Liam Gillick and published by Book Works (UK). This book was released on 1995 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet de Book Works: "Tiré du site Internet de Book Works: "The central character of Erasmus is Late is Erasmus Darwin, opium-eater and brother of the more famous Charles who is indeed late. Late for a dinner party that he himself is giving and whose illustrious guests, already assembled around his table, include: Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense under Kennedy; Masura Ibuka, co-founder of Sony; and Murry Wilson, father of Brian Wilson. Whilst the guests wait, Erasmus dawdles through contemporary London becoming waylaid by different sites, which represent for Gillick, the development of free-thinking; Gillian Gillick, the artist's mother, illustrates these sites with line drawings. Erasmus Darwin epitomises for Gillick the activity of free-thinking; a form of political pursuit dependent on wealth and leisure and problematic in its relationship to 'unfree' thought and the working classes. On one level a guide to contemporary London seen through the eyes of a Georgian, Erasmus is Late is also an examination of pre-Marxist positions, an ill-researched investigation of a Utopian optimism that is struggling to predict the future."

Download or read book Liam Gillick written by Galerie Esther Schipper and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liam Gillick (*1964, Aylesbury, United Kingdom) is one of the most prominent representatives of new developments in contemporary art. The title of his new publication Half a Complex refers to an interest in systems of development and production, suggesting a sense of deliberate incompletion at the heart of the oeuvre. The distinct bodies of work reveal a self-conscious commentary on the conditions of production and reception that surround art today. Alongside the in-depth documentation of Gillick's various graphic works, fi lms, and exhibitions since 2008, the monograph features an extensive body of texts by Gillick who is also a prolifi c writer and critic of contemporary art.

Book Synopsis Meaning Liam Gillick by : Monika Szewczyk
Download or read book Meaning Liam Gillick written by Monika Szewczyk and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2009-07-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first critical reader on one of today's most pivotal (and perplexing) contemporary artists. Liam Gillick emerged as part of the generation of “Young British Artists” who energized the British art scene in the 1980s and 1990s. He is now one of the most influential (and perplexing) artists in all of contemporary art. Gillick's discursive mode of art practice—often associated with “relational aesthetics”—complicates object production, embraces the exhibition as medium, and explores the social role and function of art. His body of work includes variations on “discussion platforms” (architectural structures that question or facilitate social interaction), text sculptures, and published texts that reflect on the increasing gap between utopian idealism and the real world. Artist, writer, curator, and provocateur, Gillick explores how an artistic practice can be conducted and represented, while at the same time questioning curatorial practice and the conventions of applied design. This reader coincides with a year-long, multi-venue, mid-career retrospective that serves both as a continuous investigation into Gillick's practice and an in-depth study of his work to date. The book offers a range of critical perspectives on Gillick's work. Among them: political scientist Chantall Mouffe develops her notion of radical democracy and antagonism; sociologist Maurizio Lazzarato (whose theorization of immaterial labor influenced Gillick) comments on the current economic crisis; philosopher and artist Benoît Maire links Gillick to continental philosophy; and Johanna Burton questions Gillick's practice in the context of feminist critique.ContributorsPeio Aguirre, Julieta Aranda, Johanna Burton, Nikolaus Hirsch, John Kelsey, Maurizio Lazzarato, Maria Lind, Sven Lütticken, Benoît Maire, Chantall Mouffe, Barbara Steiner, Marcus Verhagen

Book Synopsis Postproduction by : Nicolas Bourriaud
Download or read book Postproduction written by Nicolas Bourriaud and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French writer Nicolas Bourriaud discusses how, since the early nineties, an ever increasing number of artworks have been created on the basis of preexisting works; more and more artists interpret, reproduce, re-exhibit, or use works made by others or available cultural products. This art of postproduction seems to respond to the proliferating chaos of global culture in the information age, which is characterized by an increase in the supply of works and the art worlds annexation of forms ignored or disdained until now. First published in 2002, this 2nd edition contains a new foreword where the author reflects on how the art of postproduction developed over the last couple of years.Nicolas Bourriaud is the co-director of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. His previous books include Lère tertiaire (Flammarion), Ésthétique relationnelle (Presses du réel), and Formes de vie (Denoël).
Book Synopsis The Politics of Contemporary Art Biennials by : Panos Kompatsiaris
Download or read book The Politics of Contemporary Art Biennials written by Panos Kompatsiaris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary art biennials are sites of prestige, innovation and experimentation, where the category of art is meant to be in perpetual motion, rearranged and redefined, opening itself to the world and its contradictions. They are sites of a seemingly peaceful cohabitation between the elitist and the popular, where the likes of Jeff Koons encounter the likes of Guy Debord, where Angela Davis and Frantz Fanon share the same ground with neoliberal cultural policy makers and creative entrepreneurs. Building on the legacy of events that conjoin art, critical theory and counterculture, from Nova Convention to documenta X, the new biennial blends the modalities of protest with a neoliberal politics of creativity. This book examines a strained period for these high art institutions, a period when their politics are brought into question and often boycotted in the context of austerity, crisis and the rise of Occupy cultures. Using the 3rd Athens Biennale and the 7th Berlin Biennale as its main case studies, it looks at how the in-built tensions between the domains of art and politics take shape when spectacular displays attempt to operate as immediate activist sites. Drawing on ethnographic research and contemporary cultural theory, this book argues that biennials both denunciate the aesthetic as bourgeois category and simultaneously replicate and diffuse an exclusive sociability across social landscapes.

Book Synopsis Spaces of Experience by : Charlotte Klonk
Download or read book Spaces of Experience written by Charlotte Klonk and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study of art gallery interiors examines the changing ideals and practices of galleries in Europe and North America from the 18th to the late 20th century. It offers a detailed account of the different displays that have been created—the colors of the background walls, lighting, furnishings, the height and density of the art works on show—and it traces the different scientific, political and commercial influences that lay behind their development. Charlotte Klonk shows that scientists like Hermann von Helmholtz and Wilhelm Wundt advanced theories of perception that played a significant role in justifying new modes of exhibiting. Equally important for the changing modes of exhibition in art galleries was what Michael Baxandall has called “the period eye,” a way of seeing informed by the impact of new fashions in interior decoration and by department store and shop window displays. The history of museum interiors, she argues, should be appreciated as a revealing chapter in the broader history of experience.
