Book excerpt: "This edition is based on the Escorial manuscript, an early (late thirteenth century) version in French, reflecting certain features of the language of the north, and especially of Picardy, where Brunetto spend most of his exile years. The Escorial manuscript appears to be unique among early manuscripts in French in that it contains much material missing from the other manuscripts in French; of special interest is a long passage in the Bestiary, which is missing from all other French versions."--BOOK JACKET.
Download or read book The Wordhord written by Hana Videen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and illuminating collection of weird, wonderful, and downright baffling words from the origins of English—and what they reveal about the lives of the earliest English speakers Old English is the language you think you know until you actually hear or see it. Unlike Shakespearean English or even Chaucer’s Middle English, Old English—the language of Beowulf—defies comprehension by untrained modern readers. Used throughout much of Britain more than a thousand years ago, it is rich with words that haven’t changed (like word), others that are unrecognizable (such as neorxnawang, or paradise), and some that are mystifying even in translation (gafol-fisc, or tax-fish). In this delightful book, Hana Videen gathers a glorious trove of these gems and uses them to illuminate the lives of the earliest English speakers. We discover a world where choking on a bit of bread might prove your guilt, where fiend-ship was as likely as friendship, and where you might grow up to be a laughter-smith. The Wordhord takes readers on a journey through Old English words and customs related to practical daily activities (eating, drinking, learning, working); relationships and entertainment; health and the body, mind, and soul; the natural world (animals, plants, and weather); locations and travel (the source of some of the most evocative words in Old English); mortality, religion, and fate; and the imagination and storytelling. Each chapter ends with its own “wordhord”—a list of its Old English terms, with definitions and pronunciations. Entertaining and enlightening, The Wordhord reveals the magical roots of the language you’re reading right now: you’ll never look at—or speak—English in the same way again.

Book Synopsis The Poetic Voices of John Gower by : Matthew W. Irvin
Download or read book The Poetic Voices of John Gower written by Matthew W. Irvin and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gower's use of the persona, the figure of the writer implicated in the text, is the main theme of this book. While it traces the development of Gower's voice through his major works, it concentrates on the dialogue of Amans and Genius in the Confessio Amantis. It argues that Gower negotiates problems of politics and problems of love by means of an analogy between political ethics and the rules of fin amour; Amans and Genius are both drawn from and occupied with amatory and ethical traditions, and their discourse produces a series of attempts to find a coherent and rational union of lover and ruler. The volume also argues that Gower's goal is poetic as well as political: through the personae, Gower's readers experience the pains and pleasures of erotic and social love. Gower's personae voice potential responses to exemplary experience, prompting readers to feel and to judge, and moving them to become better lovers and better rulers. Gower's analogy between fin amour and politics brings the affects of the lover to the action of government, and suggests for both love and rule the moderation that brings peace and joy. Matthew W. Irvin is Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Chair of the Medieval Studies Program at Sewanee.

The book then discusses Brunetto's translations of Aristotle's Ethics and Cicero's De inventione, as texts presented to Charles of Anjou and others, as well as the influence of these texts on Dante. Appendices present the archival documents discussed in the book and list manuscripts containing Latino's writings.
Book Synopsis The Mirror in Medieval and Early Modern Culture by : Nancy M. Frelick
Download or read book The Mirror in Medieval and Early Modern Culture written by Nancy M. Frelick and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirrors have always fascinated humankind. They collapse ordinary distinctions, making visible what is normally invisible, and promising access to hidden realities. Yet, these liminal objects also point to the limitations of human perception, knowledge, and wisdom. In this interdisciplinary volume, specialists in medieval and early modern science, cultural and political history, as well as art history, philosophy, and literature come together to explore the intersections between material and metaphysical mirrors in Europe and the Islamic world. During the time periods studied here, various technologies were transforming the looking glass as an optical device, scientific instrument, and aesthetic object, making it clearer and more readily available, though it remained a rare and precious commodity. While technical innovations spawned new discoveries and ways of seeing, belief systems were slower to change, as expressed in the natural sciences, mystical writings, literature, and visual culture. Mirror metaphors based on analogies established in the ancient world still retained significant power and authority, perhaps especially when related to Aristotelian science, the medieval speculum tradition, religious iconography, secular imagery, Renaissance Neoplatonism, or spectacular Baroque engineering, artistry, and self-fashioning. Mirror effects created through myths, metaphors, rhetorical strategies, or other devices could invite self-contemplation and evoke abstract or paradoxical concepts. Whether faithful or deforming, specular reflections often turn out to be ambivalent and contradictory: sometimes sources of illusion, sometimes reflections of divine truth, mirrors compel us to question the very nature of representation.

Book Synopsis Showing of Love by : Julian (of Norwich)
Download or read book Showing of Love written by Julian (of Norwich) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Showing of Love, Julia Bolton Holloway provides a complete translation of Julian of Norwich's ground-breaking text, opening windows of insight into her medieval world. As a female mystic and theologian who was uniquely recognized (in a time when most women were not) for her holiness, Julian of Norwich also came to be known as a catechist, prophet, and spiritual director. Showing of Love records her own healing encounter with divine love and has for many centuries been a source of healing and inspiration for others. Readers of Julian's work find her belief that God sits in our soul as a fair city to be of profound value. That city is every city, Mary its queen, Christ its king. Julian offers these layers in rich text and variant readings. Julian dedicated years of her life to shaping Showing of Love, at the end rewriting it to preserve it from censorship. The anchoress lived in St. Julian's churchyard in Norwich. Her text was saved from destruction by nuns in Brigittine and Benedictine convents, first in England, then in exile after the Reformation. Julian's writings were later published by the Benedictines in 1670. They reveal her strong links with Benedict that continue to have lasting value for readers today. Includes two-color ink on inside pages. Julia Bolton Holloway, PhD, is a vowed hermit living in Florence, Italy. She has published seventeen other works on important historical figures.
