It covers jade and bronze ware, gold and silver ware and porcelain ware, pottery, porcelain, painting, calligraphy, and handicrafts. There are 363 relics in the book. In 960, Zhao Kuangtin, commander of the imperial guard troops of the later Zhou Dynasty staged a mutiny at Chenqiao and proclaimed himself emperor. He named his new dynasty the Song Dynasty and chose Dongling Kaifeng for the capital. This dynasty now called the Northern Song in history, gradually eliminated rival regimes and ended the separation of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, co-existing with the Liao Regime established by the Qidan ethic group and Western Xia Regime established by the Dangxian ethic group. In 1127 Emperors Huizong and Quinzong were taken captive by the Jin Dynasty established by the Jurchen people, thus ending the Northern Song Dynasty. In the same year, Zhao Gou, then King King, established the imperial court of Song and moved the capital to Linhan (present day Hangzhou City in Zhejiang). This is what history calls the Southern Song Dynasty, and formed a glance at the Jin and Western Xia. In this period, thanks to easy politics and a relatively emancipated ideology, great achievements were obtained in various scientific technologies, theoretical trends, academic schools, religious thought and literary creation and the arts also showed an unprecedented prosperous science. Jade ware penetrated various aspects of social life, and he shapes, decorations and patterns all showed a distinctive secularisation. The invasion of northern nomads introduced a new cultural atmosphere to the Central Plains. The porcelain kilns could be found everywhere and finally developed into eight major systems: Ding, Yaozhou, Cizhou, Jun, Yuezhou, Longquan, Jingdezhen blueish white porcelain and Jian kilns. As well, there were four major royal kilns: Ru Kiln and Jun Kiln of the Northern Song Dynasty and Xiunesisi Kiln and Jiaotanxia Kiln of the Southern Dynasty. The arts of calligraphy and painting were typical representatives of the flourishing culture in the Song Dynasty. During this period an imperial art academy was founded, enlisting folk artists and a large number of professional painters were trained. Calligraphers of the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties inherited previous styles but also emphasised the representation of the individual subjective will. Other handicrafts developed: gold and silver ware tended to be light, handy and graceful. In the Song Dynasty, people has less costly funerals so less jade has been unearthed. Those that have are in: Sichuan, Zhejiang and Jiangxis. The emphasis is on practical utensils, drinking vessels, dress adornments and accessories. At the same time, there was progress in the technologies of jade carving: layered piercing and large-scale jade ware. This book, the sixth in a ten-volume collection, brings to the English-speaking world a series of books from China which has been complied by an Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics. Ideas about individual morality and state ideology were based on the ancient teachings of Confucius with modifications by later interpreters and government institutions. Throughout the imperial period, members of the elite made, sponsored, and inscribed or used illustrations of themes taken from history, literature, and recent events to promote desired conduct among various social groups. This dimension of Chinese art history has never before been broadly covered or investigated in historical context. The first half of the study examines the nature of narrative illustration in China and traces the evolution of its functions, conventions, and rhetorical strategies from the second century BCE through the eleventh century. Under the stimulus of Buddhism, sophisticated techniques developed for representing stories in visual form. Book excerpt: "The intense piety of late T’ang essays on Buddhism by literati has helped earn the T’ang its title of the “golden age of Chinese Buddhism.” In contrast, the Sung is often seen as an age in which the literati distanced themselves from Buddhism. This study of Sung devotional texts shows, however, that many literati participated in intra-Buddhist debates. Others were drawn to Buddhism because of its power, which found expression and reinforcement in its ties with the state. For some, monasteries were extravagant houses of worship that reflected the corruption of the age; for others, the sacrifice and industry demanded by such projects were exemplars worthy of emulation. Finally, Buddhist temples could evoke highly personal feelings of filial piety and nostalgia. This book demonstrates that representations of Buddhism by lay people underwent a major change during the T’ang–Sung transition. These changes built on basic transformations within the Buddhist and classicist traditions and sometimes resulted in the use of Buddhism and Buddhist temples as frames of reference to evaluate aspects of lay society. Buddhism, far from being pushed to the margins of Chinese culture, became even more a part of everyday elite Chinese life."

The subject matter of most earlier works of art was drawn from a broadly shared heritage of political, religious, and literary themes. Late in the century, however, a group of scholar-artists began to make paintings that reflected the private experiences of their own lives. Robert Harrist argues here that no work illuminates this development more vividly than Mountain Villa, a handscroll by the renowned artist Li Gonglin (ca. 1041-1106). Through a detailed reading of the painting and an analysis of its place in the visual culture of Li's time, the author offers a new explanation for the emergence of autobiographic content in Chinese art. Harrist proposes that the subject of Li's painting--his garden in the Longmian Mountains--was itself a form of self-representation, since a garden was then considered a reflection of its owner's character and values. He demonstrates also that Li's turn toward the imagery of private life was inspired by the conventions of Chinese lyric poetry, in which poets recorded and responded to the experiences of their lives. The book draws the reader into the artistic, scholarly, and political world of Li Gonglin and shows the profound influence of Buddhism on Chinese painting and poetry. Liang, a high-ranking eunuch official who sought to raise his social status from that of despised menial to educated elite, had privileged access to the emperor and palace. McNair’s study, based on her translation and extensive analysis of the text of the Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings, offers a definitive argument for the authorship of this major landmark in Chinese painting criticism and clarifies why and how it was compiled. The Painting Master’s Shame describes the remarkable circumstances of the period around 1120, when the catalogue was written. The political struggles over the New Policies, the promotion of the “scholar amateur” ideal in painting criticism and practice, and the rise of eunuch court officials as a powerful class converged to allow those officials the unprecedented opportunity to enhance their prestige through scholarly activities and politics. McNair analyzes the catalogue’s central polemical narrative—the humiliation of the high-ranking minister mistakenly called by the lowly title “Painting Master”—as the key to understanding Liang Shicheng’s methods and motives.

Book excerpt: In The Aesthetics of Qiyun and Genius: Spirit Consonance in Chinese Landscape Painting and Some Kantian Echoes, Xiaoyan Hu provides an interpretation of the notion of qiyun, or spirit consonance, in Chinese painting, and considers why creating a painting—especially a landscape painting—replete with qiyun is regarded as an art of genius, where genius is an innate mental talent. Through a comparison of the role of this innate mental disposition in the aesthetics of qiyun and Kant’s account of artistic genius, the book addresses an important feature of the Chinese aesthetic tradition, one that evades the aesthetic universality assumed by a Kantian lens. Drawing on the views of influential sixth to fourteenth-century theorists and art historians and connoisseurs, the first part explains and discusses qiyun and its conceptual development from a notion mainly applied to figure painting to one that also plays an enduring role in the aesthetics of landscape painting. In the light of Kant’s account of genius, the second part examines a range of issues regarding the role of the mind in creating a painting replete with qiyun and the impossibility of teaching qiyun. Through this comparison with Kant, Hu demystifies the uniqueness of qiyun aesthetics and also illuminates some limitations in Kant’s aesthetics.
