Download or read book George Daniels written by Michael Clerizo and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The watch must be original in design and conception and, when completed, beautiful in appearance.” —George Daniels, Watchmaking Master watchmaker and inventor George Daniels (1926–2011) was regarded as the finest exponent of his craft in the world. Over the course of his career he laboriously constructed twenty-five mechanical watches using antiquated tools and creating almost every component by hand. Each is a work of great originality and exceptional beauty, and his creations are appreciated as milestones in the art of watchmaking. While admired for their lucidity of appearance and unadorned dials, Daniels’s watches feature a raft of exquisite complications, such as chronographs, thermometers and power reserve indicators. His more intricate designs also incorporate perpetual calendars and minute repeaters, as well as indictors displaying mean solar and sidereal time, the age and phases of the moon, and the equation of time. Most significant of all Daniels’s contributions to the field of mechanical horology is his revolutionary invention: the co-axial escapement. This, the first noteworthy advance in practical watch design since Thomas Mudge’s lever escapement of 1754, helped to save a mechanical watch industry in danger of being overwhelmed by mass-produced quartz wristwatches. Detailed photographs of all of Daniels’s unique watches (both dial and movement) can be seen here, along with rare and previously unpublished images from Daniels’s own archive of photographs and working drawings. Michael Clerizo worked closely with George Daniels in the preparation of this book, the artist recounting episodes from his life and career over their innumerable conversations at his home on the Isle of Man. That biography helps ensure the book is a fitting and authentic tribute to the greatest watchmaker of the modern era.

Download or read book Bulova written by Aaron Sigmond and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bulova: A History of Firsts chronicles the extraordinary American watch company in a fittingly unusual manner: by recounting an epic, multi-generational picaresque that runs from the Gilded Age up through present-day New York City. Joseph Bulova, the man behind the movement by which America would set its time, was an iconoclastic industrialist who introduced standardized mass production to fine mechanical watchmaking, fostering in turn a corporate culture of innovation that endures today. Less a traditional corporate history than an exactingly curated periodical, this profound new title features eight visually captivating chapters comprising an essay each by luminaries including style journalists David Coggins and Matthew Hranek, music-industry legend Nile Rodgers, advertising writer Stuart Elliott, noted horology authority Jack Forster and more, all edited by luxury historian Aaron Sigmond.

Download or read book Blue White Red written by Alain Mabanckou and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mabanckou dazzles with technical dexterity and emotional depth” in his debut novel, winner of the Grand Prix Littéraire de l’Afrique Noire (Publishers Weekly, starred review). This tale of wild adventure reveals the dashed hopes of Africans living between worlds. When Moki returns to his village from France wearing designer clothes and affecting all the manners of a Frenchman, Massala-Massala, who lives the life of a humble peanut farmer after giving up his studies, begins to dream of following in Moki’s footsteps. Together, the two take wing for Paris, where Massala-Massala finds himself a part of an underworld of out-of-work undocumented immigrants. After a botched attempt to sell metro passes purchased with a stolen checkbook, he winds up in jail and is deported. Blue White Red is a novel of postcolonial Africa where young people born into poverty dream of making it big in the cities of their former colonial masters. Alain Mabanckou’s searing commentary on the lives of Africans in France is cut with the parody of African villagers who boast of a son in the country of Digol. Praise for Alain Mabanckou and Blue White Red “Mabanckou counts as one of the most successful voices of young African literature.” —Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin “The African Beckett.” —The Economist “Blue White Red stands at the beginning of the author’s remarkable and multifaceted career as a novelist, essayist and poet . . . this debut novel shows much of his style and substance in remarkable ways . . . Dundy’s translation is excellent.” —Africa Book Club “Mabanckou’s provocative novel probes the many facets of the ‘migration adventure.’” —Booklist
