Download or read book History of Concepts written by Iain Hampsher-Monk and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Heroic Hearts by : Jennifer J. Popiel
Download or read book Heroic Hearts written by Jennifer J. Popiel and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroic Hearts examines how young women in nineteenth-century France, authorized by a widespread cultural discourse that privileged individual authority over domesticity and marriage, sought to change the world. Jennifer J. Popiel offers a recuperative reading of sentimental authority, especially in its relationship to religious vocabulary. Heroic Hearts uncovers the ways sentimental appeals authorized women to trust themselves as modern actors for a project of cultural restoration. With their emphasis on sacrifice and heroism, these cultural currents offered liberatory potential. Heroic Hearts examines not only general cultural currents but their adoption by particular women, each of whom was privileged with access to money and social influence. The words of three extraordinary women, Philippine Duchesne, Pauline Jaricot, and Zélie Martin, offer powerful testimony to their agency. These women's rejection of "traditional" domesticity, believed to be a formative influence for their class, demonstrates how women understood the imperative to change the world outside of their natural families. Their writings, which demonstrate the appeal of sentimental virtue, show us how women's public lives could exist not in opposition to prevailing religious and social ideals but because of them.

Book Synopsis The History of Political and Social Concepts by : Melvin Richter
Download or read book The History of Political and Social Concepts written by Melvin Richter and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, German scholars have developed distinctive methods for writing the history of political, social, and philosophical concepts. This work is a critical introduction to this emerging genre: the history of political and social concepts, or Begriffsgeschichte. Systematically surveying political, social, and philosophical discourses and their contexts, historians of concepts track linguistically how the advent, mentalities, and effects of modernity have been conceptualized in contested forms. After assessing the programs and achievements of this genre, and analyzing extended examples of its use, the author argues the need for an analogous project to chart the careers of concepts central to the political and social vocabularies of English-speaking societies.

Book Synopsis Analogical Thinking in Architecture by : Jean-Pierre Chupin
Download or read book Analogical Thinking in Architecture written by Jean-Pierre Chupin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth exploration of the rich and persistent use of analogical thinking in the built environment. Since the turn of the 21st century, design thinking has permeated many fields outside of the design disciplines. It is expected to succeed whenever disciplinary boundaries need to be transcended in order to think outside the box. This book argues that these qualities have long been supported by analogical thinking-an agile way of reasoning in which think the unknown through the familiar. The book is organized into four case studies: the first reviews analogical models that have been at the heart of design thinking representations from the 1960s to the present day; the second investigates the staying power of biological analogies; the third explores the paradoxical imaginary of "analogous cities" as a means of integrating contemporary architecture with heritage contexts; while the fourth unpacks the critical and theoretical potential of linguistic metaphors and visual comparisons in architectural discourse. Comparing views on the role of analogies and metaphors by prominent voices in architecture and related disciplines from the 17th century to the present, the book shows how the analogical world of the project is revealed as a wide-open field of creative and cognitive interactions. These visual and textual operations are explained through 36 analogical plates which can be read as an inter-text demonstrating how analogy has the power to reconcile design and theories.

Download or read book South India written by Philip Ward and published by Oleander Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you are fortunate enough to be travelling in India, and specially in the regions that he has already covered, then look no further. This is the one book you really need" ""Ward, in one sweep of his pen, with the strength of his convictions to back him, convinces his readers of the reality and the magic that is India"." - The Hindustan Times "South India" is a journey of exploration through the history, culture, wildlife, art, architecture, landscapes and communities of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Goa, with their diverse traditions of Hinduism, Christianity, and here and there Judaism, Islam and Jainism. From coastal Madras to the religious centres of Kanchipuram and Madurai, from the rock fort of Trichy to the tip of Cape Comorin, Philip Ward has wandered far and wide in the land of the Tamils. Kerala too is diverse and tropically lovely, with seaports and inland waterways, palaces and bazaars, wildlife sanctuaries and Kathakali dance festivals. Goa has become established as one of the world's most attractive beach-holiday resorts, but there is much to see in historic, abandoned Old Goa and its offshoot Panaji; in lakes and nature reserves; fascinating churches and inland temples, coastal forts and traditional Portuguese-style mansions. South India describes the cool hill-station still called 'Snooty Ooty', the great art gallery of Tanjore, the former French enclave of Pondicherry, and the rock-cut shrines and sculpture of 7th to 8th-century Mamallapuram. Intended for first-time visitors as well as experienced travellers who wish to understand the background to the vision, South India provides a sympathetic and thoughtful companion to some of India's most spectacular attractions. For sheer depth of understanding and quality of information, this title represents essential background information for anyone thinking of travelling to this area and, as such, remains unsurpassed since its first publication in 1991.
