Book excerpt: Vacuum apparatus is widely used in research and industrial establishments for providing and monitoring the working environments required for the operation of many kinds of scientific instruments and process plant. The vacuum conditions needed range from the relatively coarse vacuum requirements in applications covering diverse fields such as food packaging, dentistry (investment casting), vacuum forming, vacuum metallur gical processes, vacuum impregnation, molecular distillation, vacuum drying and freeze drying etc. to the other extreme involving the highest possible vacuum as in particle accelerators, space technology -both in simulation and outer space, and research studies of atomically clean surfaces and pure condensed metal films. Vacua commence with the rough vacuum region, i.e. from atmosphere to 100 Pa * passing 6 through medium vacuum of 100 Pa to 0·1 Pa and high vacuum of 0·1 Pa to 1 J.lPa (10- Pa) until ultra high vacuum is reached below 1 J.lPa to the limit of measurable pressure about 12 I pPa (10- Pa).

Book excerpt: Handbook of Vacuum Physics, Volume 3: Technology is a handbook of vacuum physics, with emphasis on the properties of miscellaneous materials such as mica, oils, greases, waxes, and rubber. Accurate modern tables of physical constants, properties of materials, laboratory techniques, and properties of commercial pumps, gauges, and leak detectors are presented. This volume is comprised of 12 chapters and begins with a discussion on pump oils, divided into rotary pump oils and vapor pump oils. The next chapter deals with the properties and applications of greases, including outgassing and vapor pressures, plug cocks, and rotary and reciprocating transmissions. The uses and general properties of waxes are also considered, along with those of adhesives, film coatings or impregnants, lubricants, and plastics. The remaining chapters focus on elastomers (rubbers), O-rings and other gaskets, mica, and cleaning fluids. The final chapter describes other miscellaneous materials such as desiccants and molecular sieves, with particular reference to activated charcoal, phosphorus pentoxide, silica gel, synthetic zeolites, and activated alumina. This book will be a useful resource for students in engineering or physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vacuum Technology and Applications reviews the most commonly encountered methods for the production, containment, and measurement of subatmospheric pressure. This book also outlines a number of very important applications of this technology. This text is organized into eight chapters and begins with a brief survey of the fundamental principles of vacuum technology. The succeeding chapters deal with the pumps used for the production of rough-medium and high-ultra-high vacua. These chapters specifically cover their principles, performance, and applications. These topics are followed by a discussion of the devices for residual gas analysis and partial pressure measurement. Other chapters consider the aspects of leak detection using He-specific mass spectrometer and the materials, components, and fabrication of vacuum devices. The final chapters explore the application of vacuum technology in critical areas of industrial activity, such as thin-film technology, semiconductor, metallurgy, and chemical industry. This book will prove useful to practicing mechanical, chemical, and design engineers.
