Book excerpt: It is hard to imagine nowadays that, for many years, France and Germany considered each other as "arch enemies." And yet, for well over a century, these two countries waged verbal and ultimately violent wars against each other. This study explores a particularly virulent phase during which each of these two nations projected certain assumptions about national character onto the other - distorted images, motivated by antipathy, fear, and envy, which contributed to the growing hostility between the two countries in the years before the First World War. Most remarkably, as the author discovered, the qualities each country ascribed to its chief adversary appeared to be exaggerated or negative versions of precisely those qualities that it perceived to be lacking or inadequate in itself. Moreover, banishing undesirable traits and projecting them onto another people was also an essential step in the consolidation of national identity. As such, it established a pattern that has become all too familiar to students of nationalism and xenophobia in recent decades. This study shows that antagonism between states is not a fact of nature but socially constructed.

Download or read book Production and Consumption in the Low Countries, 13th-16th Centuries written by Raymond van Uytven and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this volume is the relationship between production and consumption, considered not only as the supply and demand sides of economic life, but within the broader context of the societies of the Low Countries between the 12th and the 16th centuries. Amongst the topics covered are the reality of the so-called 'late medieval depression', comparisons between the great merchant cities of Bruges and Antwerp, and the actual importance of the trade in art and luxury goods. One group of articles then looks in detail at the cloth industry, which remained the mainstay of the region's wealth, and the effects upon it of changes in technology and in fashion, while the volume concludes with two studies specially translated from Dutch, on wine and beer consumption.

Book Synopsis The Modernization of Rural France by : Roger Price
Download or read book The Modernization of Rural France written by Roger Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1983, is a major contribution to our understanding of how and why French rural peasant society became modernised by radical changes in the communications system – in particular, the coming of the railways. The author argues that complex changes in the transport systems, and their effects on agricultural market structures, finally brought traditional French rural civilisation to an end. With the extension of commercialisation, and the widening of horizons, new economic and social structures – and changed attitudes – rapidly came into being. Writing as an economic historian, the author has adopted an interdisciplinary approach to this study which incorporates economic, sociological, historical and geographical methods and data.
Book Synopsis Feudal Empires by : John F. Le Patourel
Download or read book Feudal Empires written by John F. Le Patourel and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1984-07-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of the selected papers of John La Patourel, considered by him to be the most representative of his body of work on the Norman and Plantaganet feudal empires. A striking feature of this anthology is the unity, modification and development of Professor Le Patourel's thought from his earliest to the latest essays included. Adopting a comparative framework and looking at topics such as the Channel Islands in the early middle ages, Normandy and England from 1066-1144, the Angevin Empire, the Hundred Years War and the Treaty of Brétigny, Professor La Patourel's work yields new insights and understandings in the history of 14th-century Europe.
