Since the methodology of statistics is expanding rapidly, many methods are not considered at all or only introduced in the basic textbooks of statistics. There is a need for intermediate statistical methods concerned with increasingly complicated ap plications of statistics to actual research situations. Here the specification of terms helps to find some sources. Since the ref erences vary considerably in length and content, the number of culled or extracted terms per referenced page varies even more, as does also their degree of specialization; however in most cases an intermediate statistical level is maintained.

According to his birth certificate it is true, but it is unbelievable. Two of the three editors remembers very well the Golden Age of Operations Research at Bonn when Franz Ferschl worked together with Wilhelm Krelle, Martin Beckmann and Horst Albach. The importance of this fruitful cooperation is reflected by the fact that half of the contributors to this book were strongly influenced by Franz Ferschl and his colleagues at the University of Bonn. Clearly, Franz Ferschl left his traces at all the other places of his professional activities, in Vienna and Munich. This is demonstrated by the present volume as well. Born in 1929 in the Upper-Austrian Miihlviertel, his scientific education brought him to Vienna where he studied mathematics. In his early years he was attracted by Statistics and Operations Research. During his employment at the Osterreichische Bundeskammer fUr Gewerbliche Wirtschaft in Vienna he prepared his famous book on queueing theory and stochastic processes in economics. This work has been achieved during his scarce time left by his duties at the Bundeskammer, mostly between 6 a.m. and midnight. All those troubles were, however, soon rewarded by the chair of statistics at Bonn University. As a real Austrian, the amenities of the Rhineland could not prevent him from returning to Vienna, where he took the chair of statistics.

Since that time on I have given many courses and seminars to students, researchers, designers, and site engineers interested in reliability. During that period, the scope of structural reliability gradually enlarged to become a substantial part of the general reliability theory. First, it is apparent that bearing structures should not be isolated objectives of interest, and, consequently, that constntCted facilities should be studied. Second, a new engineering branch has emerged -reliability engineering. These two facts have highlighted new aspects and asked for new approaches to the theory and applications. I always state in my lectures that the reliability theory is nothing more than mathematized engineering judgment. In fact, thanks mainly to probability and statistics, and also to computers, the empirical knowledge gained by Humankind's construction experience could have been transposed into a pattern of logic thinking, able to produce conclusions and to forecast the behavior of engineering entities. This manner of thinking has developed into an intricate network linked by certain rules, which, in a way, can be considered a type of reliability grammar. We can discern many grammatical concepts in the general structure of the reliability theory.

Book excerpt: An important branch in insurance mathematics is the pricing of possible large claims that are either the results of many small claims occuring at once or that are caused by single events. A premium calculation principle that emphasises the structure of an insurance portfolio is the so called credibility premium.The credibility premium is a convex combination of the class mean, representing the insurance portfolio's general behaviour and the individual mean. The latter takes into account the individual claim history of the risks subsumed in the portfolio. The insurer calculating the premium does not necessarily need to know the claim amount distribution, even though she has to make some assumptions. In this thesis an insurance portfolio of $N$ risks -- then called risk classes -- is considered. It is assumed that each of the risks typically causesa small claim amount during an insurance period. But once in a while, the risks may produce large claim amounts due to a contamination of the small claim amount distribution function. For such models to calculate an insurance premium, the credibility approach can be applied combined with methods from robust statistics. In that case, both the claim amounts and the insurance premiums are separated into ordinary and extreme parts. The premium for the ordinary part is determined by applying the credibility principle. We assume the claim amount distribution function of risk $i, \, i=1, \ldots, N$ to be $\Gamma(\alpha, \theta_i)$ with risk parameter $\theta_i$, being a random variable itself. The distribution function of the independent risk parameters $\theta_i$ is known. The rare, large claim amounts originate from a contamination of the claim amount distribution function $\Gamma(\alpha, \theta_i)$. Thus, we will introduce robust estimators. Determining the premium of the extreme part, the mean excess function is going to be used. After a brief introduction of conecpts in robust statistics, such as robust M-estimators and influence functions, we will define two robust scale M-estimators with respect to our data model, both of them depending on parameters $a$ and $b$. We also discuss the question of choosing optimal values for $a$ and $b$. Besides we are going to compute the influence functions, gross errors and finite sample breakdown points for these estimators. It is also proved that the two estimators are asymptotically normally distributed. The thesis is completed by a simulation study. We analyse the sensitivity of the robust scale M-estimators towards different choices of $a$ and $b$, as well as changing sample sizes and possible occurings of large claims. The simulation will show that for reasonable choices of $a$ and $b$, the robust estimators can bear the comparison with the median, which is known as the most robust estimator. As well, we will estimate the credibility premiums for an insurance portfolio consisting of 25 risk classes and discuss the circumstances, when an actuary should apply the robust credibility approach.
