Fue hecho, pues, para traductores, para los que no son especialistas en el area sino investigadores de otras conexas y hayan de imponerse de las acepciones medievales de los terminos latinos que la Filosofia suele emplear; pero tambien, y principalmente, como herramienta inicial para quienes comienzan a adentrarse en el vasto campo de la filosofia medieval. Los primeros podran encontrar algunas sugerencias de traduccion y la aclaracion del sentido de ciertas palabras y expresiones que presentan problemas a la hora de verterlas al espanol; a los segundos les allega una sintesis muy apretada de cada tema, evitandoles destinar demasiado tiempo en rastreos que los distraen de su especialidad; para quienes se inician en la filosofia de este periodo, se propone procurar un elemento que, mediante sus frecuentes remisiones internas, ilumine el itinerario de viaje a esa supuesta "Edad oscura."

De ello da fe este volumen de la Enciclopedia IberoAmericana de Filosofía. La filosofía medieval es el encuentro del cristianismo y de la filosofía antigua, cuyo resultado, según se pensó durante mucho tiempo, había sido una filosofía cristiana. Aquí se muestra, por el contrario, que la cita entre el cristianismo, la filosofía griega, el pensamiento árabe y la cultura judía fue un crisol del que emergieron los temas de la filosofía occidental. Podemos representarnos la filosofía medieval como un doble movimiento que el presente volumen reproduce a través de sus trabajos. Por un lado, un acercamiento del mundo ultramediterráneo hasta el centro de Europa, pasando por Toledo y Córdoba; por otro, un movimiento de despliegue, desde el París del siglo XIII hacia el resto del mundo conocido y hacia ese futuro que llamamos Modernidad. Del primer movimiento dan fe los trabajos sobre Agustín de Hipona y Juan Escoto Erígena, que hacen presente la preocupación por la interioridad del alma humana y por el conocimiento del mundo. A ello sigue el estudio de la filosofía árabe medieval, puente entre Oriente y Occidente. Con Anselmo y Abelardo asistimos a la importación del pensamiento aristotélico, que Tomás de Aquino se encargará de elaborar poderosamente. El análisis del valor de la experiencia en Duns Scoto, del lenguaje en Guillermo de Ockham, de la política de Marsilio de Padua, y de la ciencia en Alberto de Sajonia, redondean esta aventura del pensamiento que culmina en París. De ahí se extiende hasta la conformación de la Modernidad, como atestiguan los trabajos sobre Pico della Mirandola y sobre la escolástica española en los siglos XVI y XVII. Si el principio del filosofar es la sorpresa, el lector de este volumen puede vivir una extraordinaria experiencia filosófica gracias a estudios que hasta ahora circulaban en círculos especializados y en los que la investigación iberoamericana brilla con luz propia.
