Book Synopsis The Philosophical and Literary Ideas of Mme de Staël and of Mme de Genlis by : Machteld De Poortere
Download or read book The Philosophical and Literary Ideas of Mme de Staël and of Mme de Genlis written by Machteld De Poortere and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If nearly two centuries have left the reputation of Mme de Staël intact, the same could not be said for Mme de Genlis who, despite several recent studies, remains unknown to critics and the general public. This book compares and contrasts the ideas of these two women who lived in the same period. It strives to emphasize the system of thought that was the basis for their reactions to the historical events of their time. This volume contains a new reading of the historical novels of Mme de Genlis, highlighting some Romantic aspects in her works. It shows that Mme de Genlis, who professed to hate Romanticism, was in reality strongly influenced by this movement. Finally, a comparison between Corinne and Delphine and La Duchesse de la Vallière and Madame de Maintenon underlines the importance of history for these two writers and the different ways in which they approached it in their work.

Book Synopsis Thinking about the Enlightenment by : Martin L. Davies
Download or read book Thinking about the Enlightenment written by Martin L. Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking about the Enlightenment looks beyond the current parameters of studying the Enlightenment, to the issues that can be understood by reflecting on the period in a broader context. Each of the thirteen original chapters, by an international and interdisciplinary team of contributors, illustrates the problematic legacy of the Enlightenment and the continued ramifications of its thinking since the eighteenth century. Together, they consider whether modernity can see its roots in the intellectual revolution of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The collection is divided into six sections, preceded by a comprehensive introduction to the field and the most recent scholarship on the period. Across the sections, the contributors consider modern day encounters with Enlightenment thinking, including Kant’s moral philosophy, the conflict between reason and faith, the significance of the Enlightenment of law and the gender inequality that persisted throughout the eighteenth century. By examining specific encounters with the problematic results of Enlightenment concerns, the contributors are able to illuminate and offer new perspectives on topics such as human nature, race, politics, gender and rationality. Drawing from history, philosophy, literature and anthropology, this book enables students and academics alike to take a fresh look at the Enlightenment and its legacy in the modern world.

Book Synopsis Making Christians by : Denise Kimber Buell
Download or read book Making Christians written by Denise Kimber Buell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did second-century Christians vie with each other in seeking to produce an authoritative discourse of Christian identity? In this innovative book, Denise Buell argues that many early Christians deployed the metaphors of procreation and kinship in the struggle over claims to represent the truth of Christian interpretation, practice, and doctrine. In particular, she examines the intriguing works of the influential theologian Clement of Alexandria (ca. 150-210 c.e.), for whom cultural assumptions about procreation and kinship played an important role in defining which Christians have the proper authority to teach, and which kinds of knowledge are authentic. Buell argues that metaphors of procreation and kinship can serve to make power differentials appear natural. She shows that early Christian authors recognized this and often turned to such metaphors to mark their own positions as legitimate and marginalize others as false. Attention to the functions of this language offers a way out of the trap of reconstructing the development of early Christianity along the axes of "heresy" and "orthodoxy," while not denying that early Christians employed this binary. Ultimately, Buell argues, strategic use of kinship language encouraged conformity over diversity and had a long lasting effect both on Christian thought and on the historiography of early Christianity. Aperceptive and closely argued contribution to early Christian studies, Making Christians also branches out to the areas of kinship studies and the social construction of gender.
