Book Synopsis In the Second Degree by : Philip Alexander
Download or read book In the Second Degree written by Philip Alexander and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-10-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To better understand the phenomenon of Literature in the Second Degree – in Jewish and Biblical studies often characterized as parabiblical or Rewritten Bible – the current volume applies the theories of Gerard Genette to ancient and medieval literature from various cultures. Literature in the Second Degree realigns earlier (authoritative) texts to the dynamics of developing cultures and their changing cultural memories. In the case of authoritative base texts, Literature in the Second Degree reaffirms their authority by way of interpretative actualization. In the case of non-authoritative base texts it replaces them to effect cultural forgetting. Far from being just literary forgery (pseudepigraphy), Literature in the Second Degree has an important function in the development of the ancient and medieval cultures.
Book Synopsis Les lettres aux Eglises by : Ignace D'Antioche
Download or read book Les lettres aux Eglises written by Ignace D'Antioche and published by Les Editions Blanche de Peuterey. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: In AD 726, the Byzantine emperor ordered the destruction of all icons, or religious images, throughout the empire, and icons were subject to an imperial ban that was to last, with a brief remission, until AD 843. A defender of icons, St John of Damascus wrote three treatises against "those who attack the holy images." He differentiates between the veneration of icons, which is a matter of expressing honor, and idolatry, which is offering worship to something other than God.
