Book excerpt: Vlado Perlemuter had the privilege of studying all Ravel's solo piano music with the reclusive composer himself. The origins of this book lie in a series of programmes broadcast in 1950 by Radio Francaise in which Perlemuter played all Ravel's compositions for solo piano and discussed them with Helene Joudan-Morange - a distinguished violinist who had been one of Ravel's closest friends. This is a transcript of their conversations, with numerous musical examples. This edition also deals with the two piano concertos.
Book Synopsis Mendelssohn in Performance by : Siegwart Reichwald
Download or read book Mendelssohn in Performance written by Siegwart Reichwald and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring many aspects of Felix Mendelssohn's multi-faceted career as musician and how it intersects with his work as composer, contributors discuss practical issues of music making such as performance space, instruments, tempo markings, dynamics, phrasings, articulations, fingerings, and instrument techniques. They present the conceptual and ideological underpinnings of Mendelssohn's approach to performance, interpretation, and composing through the contextualization of specific performance events and through the theoretic actualization of performances of specific works. Contributors rely on manuscripts, marked or edited scores, and performance parts to convey a deeper understanding of musical expression in 19th-century Germany. This study of Mendelssohn's work as conductor, pianist, organist, violist, accompanist, music director, and editor of old and new music offers valuable perspectives on 19th-century performance practice issues.
Book Synopsis Music and/as Process by : Vanessa Hawes
Download or read book Music and/as Process written by Vanessa Hawes and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music and/as Process brings together ideas about music and the notion of process from different sub-fields within musicology and from related fields in the creative arts as a whole. These can be loosely categorised into three broad areas – composition, performance and analysis – but work in all three of these groups in the volume overlaps into the others, covers a broad range of other musicological sub-fields, and draws inspiration from, non-musicological fields. Music and/as Process comprises chapters written by a mix of scholars; some are leaders in their field and some are newer researchers, but all share an innovative and forward-thinking attitude to music research, often not well represented within ‘traditional’ musicology. Much of the work represented here started as papers or discussions at one of the Royal Musical Association (RMA) Music and/as Process Study Group Annual Conferences. The first section of the book deals with the analysis of performance and the performance of analysis. The historical nature of music and the recognition of pieces as musical ‘works’ in the traditional sense is questioned by the authors, and is a factor in the analyses which address processes in composing, performing, and listening, and the links between these, in three very different but interlinking ways. These three approaches posit new directions and territory for musical analysis. The second section builds on the first, framing performance and/as process from the individual perspectives of the authors and their experiences as practitioners. Music by Berio, de Falla, music by the authors and their collaborators, and music composed for the authors are explored through looking at processes of interpretation and risk; processes which further undermine the ontology of the musical ‘work’ as traditionally understood, and bring the practitioner as active agent to the foreground of an examination of musical discourse. The third section encounters and questions the musical ‘work’ at its inception, exploring composition and/as process through its encounters with performance, analysis, collaboration, improvisation, translation, experimentation and cross-disciplinarity. Through explorations of new music, the way in which practitioners relate to music frame a personal and reflective account of the creative process, finally looking beyond music to musicology.
Book Synopsis Memories and Commentaries by : Igor Stravinsky
Download or read book Memories and Commentaries written by Igor Stravinsky and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in one volume--the celebrated Stravinsky and Craft Conversations Few would dispute that Igor Stravinsky was the greatest composer of the twentieth century. Conductor and writer Robert Craft was his closest colleague and friend, and for over twenty-one years he lived with the Stravinskys in their Hollywood home. In the early 1950s he accompanied the composer on his concert tours, and from the mid-1950s to Stravinsky's death in 1971 he co-conducted his concerts. Together Stravinsky and Craft published five acclaimed collections known as the Conversations series, which sprung from informal talks between the two men. In this newly edited and re-structured one-volume version, Craft brings Stravinsky's reflections on his childhood, his family life, professional associates, and personal relationships into sharper focus and places the major compositions in their cultural milieux. The Conversations books are the only published writing attributed to Stravinsky that are actually "by him" in terms of fidelity to his thoughts and opinions, making this volume required reading for all fans and students of Stravinsky's music.

Book Synopsis Improvisation and Social Aesthetics by : Georgina Born
Download or read book Improvisation and Social Aesthetics written by Georgina Born and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing a wide range of improvised art and music forms—from jazz and cinema to dance and literature—this volume's contributors locate improvisation as a key site of mediation between the social and the aesthetic. As a catalyst for social experiment and political practice, improvisation aids in the creation, contestation, and codification of social realities and identities. Among other topics, the contributors discuss the social aesthetics of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the Feminist Improvising Group, and contemporary Malian music, as well as the virtual sociality of interactive computer music, the significance of "uncreative" improvisation, responses to French New Wave cinema, and the work of figures ranging from bell hooks and Billy Strayhorn to Kenneth Goldsmith. Across its diverse chapters, Improvisation and Social Aesthetics argues that ensemble improvisation is not inherently egalitarian or emancipatory, but offers a potential site for the cultivation of new forms of social relations. It sets out a new conceptualization of the aesthetic as immanently social and political, proposing a new paradigm of improvisation studies that will have reverberations throughout the humanities. Book Synopsis Hugo Riemann and the Birth of Modern Musical Thought by : Alexander Rehding
Download or read book Hugo Riemann and the Birth of Modern Musical Thought written by Alexander Rehding and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generally acknowledged as the most important German musicologist of his age, Hugo Riemann (1849–1919) shaped the ideas of generations of music scholars, not least because his work coincided with the institutionalisation of academic musicology around the turn of the last century. This influence, however, belies the contentious idea at the heart of his musical thought, an idea he defended for most of his career - harmonic dualism. By situating Riemann's musical thought within turn-of-the-century discourses about the natural sciences, German nationhood and modern technology, this book reconstructs the cultural context in which Riemann's ideas not only 'made sense' but advanced an understanding of the tonal tradition as both natural and German. Riemann's musical thought - from his considerations of acoustical properties to his aesthetic and music-historical views - thus regains the coherence and cultural urgency that it once possessed.
Book Synopsis Cecilia Reclaimed by : Susan C. Cook
Download or read book Cecilia Reclaimed written by Susan C. Cook and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cecilia, a fifteenth-century Christian martyr, has long been considered the patron saint of music. In this pathbreaking volume, ten of the best known scholars in the newly emerging field of feminist musicology explore both how gender has helped shape genres and works of music and how music has contributed to prevailing notions of gender. The musical subjects include concert music, both instrumental and vocal, and the vernacular genres of ballads, salon music, and contemporary African American rap. The essays raise issues not only of gender but also of race and class, moving among musical practices of the courtly ruling class and the elite discourse of the twentieth-century modernist movement to practices surrounding marginal girls in Renaissance Venice and the largely white middle-class experiences of magazine and balladry.

Download or read book Clara Schumann written by Nancy Reich and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing and award-winning biography tells the story of the tragedies and triumphs of Clara Wieck Schumann (1819–1896), a musician of remarkable achievements. At once artist, composer, editor, teacher, wife, and mother of eight children, she was an important force in the musical world of her time. To show how Schumann surmounted the obstacles facing female artists in the nineteenth century, Nancy B. Reich has drawn on previously unexplored primary sources: unpublished diaries, letters, and family papers, as well as concert programs. Going beyond the familiar legends of the Schumann literature, she applies the tools of musicological scholarship and the insights of psychology to provide a new, full-scale portrait. The book is divided into two parts. In Part One, Reich follows Clara Schumann's life from her early years as a child prodigy through her marriage to Robert Schumann and into the forty years after his death, when she established and maintained an extraordinary European career while supporting and supervising a household and seven children. Part Two covers four major themes in Schumann's life: her relationship with Johannes Brahms and other friends and contemporaries; her creative work; her life on the concert stage; and her success as a teacher.Throughout, excerpts from diaries and letters in Reich's own translations clear up misconceptions about her life and achievements and her partnership with Robert Schumann. Highlighting aspects of Clara Schumann's personality and character that have been neglected by earlier biographers, this candid and eminently readable account adds appreciably to our understanding of a fascinating artist and woman. For this revised edition, Reich has added several photographs and updated the text to include recent discoveries. She has also prepared a Catalogue of Works that includes all of Clara Schumann's known published and unpublished compositions and works she edited, as well as descriptions of the autographs, the first editions, the modern editions, and recent literature on each piece. The Catalogue also notes Schumann's performances of her own music and provides pertinent quotations from letters, diaries, and contemporary reviews.

Book Synopsis The Life of Berlioz by : Peter Bloom
Download or read book The Life of Berlioz written by Peter Bloom and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-11-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Berlioz situates the celebrated French musician in the vibrant and highly politicized musical culture of the periods of the Bourbon Restoration, July Monarchy, Second Republic, and Second Empire in which he lived and worked as composer, conductor, concert manager, and writer. The author of the Symphonie fantastique was indeed possessed of a fertile and fantastical imagination; but the common image of Berlioz as a misunderstood and mistreated genius obscures both the solidity of his work as a musical architect and the reality of his position as one sometimes favored by those in power. Berlioz is the quintessential romantic composer by dint of the conspicuous intermingling of art and life that marks his musical and literary output. Studying this away from the subjective sentimentality that can still mar studies of the composer in France, serves only to enhance the uncommon radiance of his music and uncommon esprit of his art.
