Greathed and Hervey Harris Greathed, two British civilians who lived in India during the mid-19th century. The letters describe the Greatheds' experiences during the Siege of Delhi, a key battle in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. They offer unique insights into the social and political forces at work in India during this period, as well as into the experiences of ordinary individuals caught up in a momentous and tumultuous event. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book entitled, “Uprising of 1857: Some Facts about Failure of Indian War of Independence” includes much detail on the nature and character of the Uprising of 1857. Although, it is a general history, which emphasizes every aspect of the Uprising, throws much light on the events, places, and personalities directly concerned to the Uprising of 1857. Many dimensions of the Uprising particularly distinct perspectives such as popular, national, military, religious, etc. has been analyzed in the modern context, and independent research and thinking. The role of different personalities also has been re-evaluated in the light of contemporary and primary sources. By writing this history the author has presented a new look of the Uprising based on critical analysis of the historical facts. This book is a humble attempt to remedy the deficiency which the author has felt after a long experience of reading and writing history. The British slowly and gradually snatched the political power of India from the Native rulers and on the pretext of moral improvement, the British Government adopted an intolerant religious policy, which led to the conversion from oriental religions to Christianity. Both Hindus and Muslims of this country began to feel that their religion was in danger, and particularly the Muslims due to their fanatical pride, and resented the Christian supremacy. Initially, the Indians resented the policies of the British Government and mobilized the civilians and militia through the famous chapati and lotus distribution. Finally, on 10th of May, the final rising exploded from Meerut which followed the long fight throughout North India. The titular Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was enthroned in the Red Fort, and Delhi was made, once again, the capital of India. The entire history covered under different chapters of this book shows the real picture of the revolt. The whole topics are quite interesting, full of knowledge, and based on authentic sources with little hypothetical narrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1857, a member of a religious sect killed himself on hearing the news that the object of his devout observance, Nikal Seyn, had died. Nikal Seyn was, in fact, John Nicholson, the leader of the British assault that recovered Delhi at the turning-point of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. What was it about Nicholson that prompted such devotion, not just from his religious followers, but from the general public? And why is he no longer considered a hero? The man called 'The Lion of the Punjab' by his contemporaries and compared to General Wolfe of Quebec, and even to Napoleon, has in recent times been dubbed 'an imperial psychopath' and 'a homosexual bully'. Yet his was a remarkable tale of a life of adventure lived on the very edge of the British Empire; of a man who was as courageous as he was ruthless, as loyal to his friends as he was merciless to those who crossed him. But it is also the story of how modern attitudes to race and Empire have changed in the years since he died. Previously unpublished material, including the diaries of contemporaries and personal letters, helps build a new perspective on Nicholson's personality. The book considers his sexuality and ambivalent attitude towards religion. It traces his murderous thoughts towards the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, John Lawrence, and reveals that, remarkably, the Nikal Seyni cult continued into the 21st century. This is the first book-length biography of Nicholson for over 70 years. A new account of the Irish soldier who became an Indian God, an examination of the cult of a dark hero, is long overdue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the trial of Bahadur Shah, a watershed moment in the 19th-century colonial history of India. The trial of Bahadur Shah raises the contentious issue of sovereignty – trial of Emperor Bahadur Shah, de jure power by de facto claimant to power, the English East India Company. There has been a lot of confusion and controversy over the trial ever since the proceedings began – its main architects could not define if it really was a juristic trial, a court of enquiry, a court-martial, or a general enquiry? This book sheds light on this event through the original, unprinted manuscript of the Trial at the end of the uprising of the 1857. It critically investigates the trial, mainly its architecture, grammar, functioning, and findings from historical, political, and juridical perspectives to determine, as far as possible, the actual position of Emperor Bahadur Shah, his strengths, and his weaknesses. Further, it examines the Rebellion of 1857, particularly in Delhi, and Bahadur Shah’s role therein. A key reading on justice in colonial history, this volume will be of interest to researchers and scholars of colonial and imperial history, modern history, political theory, and South Asia studies. It will also be of great interest to general readers interested in learning about the colonization of India by the British and its commercial arm East India Company.
