Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1881, Los Angeles was a rough, frontier community more in touch with the past than the future. The city had two dailies, the Herald and the Express, and the founding of the Times drew only modest attention. Then, in 1882, Harrison Gray Otis launched a formal column, LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE. Hundreds of letter writers used the column to call attention to the matters they thought should be the immediate concern of all Angelenos. While historians have recorded the euphoria of skyrocketing real estate prices, mass migration from the east, the Americanization of the city, and the growth of specific industries and institutions, life in Los Angeles can only be fully understood by examining the concerns of its citizens. The topics discussed reveal a Los Angeles that was occupied with concerns that still divide us today: education, crime, unequal justice, immigration, the treatment of minorities, women's rights, health care, transit, water, the river, lack of infrastructure, and government's negative effect on the business climate. Derived from more than 2,000 letters to the editor, LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE is an in-depth anthology supplemented with much historical data about the writers and events that shaped early Los Angeles on the eve of its explosive growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great teachers of the twentieth century shows a more intimate side in this collection of letters, written to a young person who was suffering in both body and mind. "Life is a razor's edge and one has to walk on that path with exquisite care and with pliable wisdom" - J Krishnamurti Between 1948 and the early 1960s, Krishnamurti was easily accessible and many people came to him. On walks, in personal meetings, through letters, the relationships blossomed. He wrote the following letters to a young friend who came to him wounded in body and mind. The letters, written between June 1948 and March 1960, reveal a rare compassion and clarity: the teaching and healing unfold; separation and distance disappear; the words flow; not a word is superfluous; the healing and teaching are simultaneous.

Book Synopsis Happiness: A Memoir by : Heather Harpham
Download or read book Happiness: A Memoir written by Heather Harpham and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reese’s Book Club x Hello Sunshine’s April 2018 book pick A shirt-grabbing, page-turning love story that follows a one-of-a-kind family through twists of fate that require nearly unimaginable choices. Happiness begins with a charming courtship between hopelessly attracted opposites: Heather, a world-roaming California girl, and Brian, an intellectual, homebody writer, kind and slyly funny, but loath to leave his Upper West Side studio. Their magical interlude ends, full stop, when Heather becomes pregnant—Brian is sure he loves her, only he doesn't want kids. Heather returns to California to deliver their daughter alone, buoyed by family and friends. Mere hours after Gracie's arrival, Heather's bliss is interrupted when a nurse wakes her, "Get dressed, your baby is in trouble." This is not how Heather had imagined new motherhood – alone, heartsick, an unexpectedly solo caretaker of a baby who smelled "like sliced apples and salted pretzels" but might be perilously ill. Brian reappears as Gracie's condition grows dire; together Heather and Brian have to decide what they are willing to risk to ensure their girl sees adulthood. The grace and humor that ripple through Harpham's writing transform the dross of heartbreak and parental fears into a clear-eyed, warm-hearted view of the world. Profoundly moving and subtly written, Happiness radiates in many directions--new, romantic love; gratitude for a beautiful, inscrutable world; deep, abiding friendship; the passion a parent has for a child; and the many unlikely ways to build a family. Ultimately it's a story about love and happiness, in their many crooked configurations.

Book Synopsis Health, Wealth, and Happiness by : David W. Jones
Download or read book Health, Wealth, and Happiness written by David W. Jones and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be faithful in your giving and God will reward you financially. It's not always stated that blatantly but the promises of the Prosperity Gospel--or the name-it-and-claim-it gospel, the health-and-wealth gospel, the word of faith movement, or positive confession theology--are false. Yet its message permeates the preaching of well-known Christian leaders: Joyce Meyer, T. D. Jakes, Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, and many more. The appeal of this teaching crosses racial, gender, denominational, and international boundaries. Why are otherwise faithful Christians so easily led astray? Because the Prosperity Gospel contains a grain of biblical truth, greatly distorted. For anyone who knows that Prosperity Gospel theology is wrong but has trouble articulating and refuting the finer points, this concise edition contains all the robust arguments of the hard-hitting original edition in a shorter, more accessible form.

Book Synopsis Personal Reminiscences, Anecdotes, and Letters of Gen. Robert E. Lee by : John William Jones
Download or read book Personal Reminiscences, Anecdotes, and Letters of Gen. Robert E. Lee written by John William Jones and published by . This book was released on 1875 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the death of General Lee a memorial volume was announced, and this Committee was appointed to superintend the publication. Circumstances, for which neither the Committee nor the publishers were responsible, delayed and finally prevented the publication of that work. In the mean time, Rev. John William Jones had prepared this book to aid in the completion of Valentine's beautiful sepulchral monument to General Lee. Mr. Jones was a faithful chaplain in the army of General Lee, and, subsequently, while minister of the Baptist Church in Lexington, enjoyed in an unusual degree his favor and regard. During this period, and while acting at times as chaplain of Washington College, Mr. Jones had special opportunities to observe the character of General Lee, for whom he entertained an enthusiastic devotion. The Committee, knowing the peculiar qualifications which the author brings to this work, have afforded him the fullest access to the materials in their possession, and are happy now to commend to the public the completed volume as a valuable contribution toward a biography of Robert E. Lee. -- Committee of the Faculty of Washington and Lee University.
