Download or read book Messenger written by Mary Fisher and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Fisher took America by storm the evening of August 19, 1992, when she addressed the Republican National Convention and gave the world a new face of American AIDS: a winsome mother of two pre-schoolers who had contracted the virus within her marriage. She had been a television producer and had been named the first woman White House Advanceman by President Gerald R. Ford, but privilege had not shielded her from the virus. While she became “a pilgrim on the road to AIDS,” devoted to advocacy and to her children, she prepared to die. With the development of antiretroviral (ARV) therapies that could prolong the lives of persons with AIDS, Fisher’s life changed dramatically once again. For fifteen years, she joined the ranks of Americans living on ARVs. Having arranged for the care of her children after her death, she now faced an uncertain future. How long would “the cocktail” work to keep her alive? Had any women been tested during drug research? How does one live wisely when death is no longer eminent and life itself is uncertain? In this moving memoir, Fisher focuses her life story through the promise she made in that 1992 speech: “I want my children to know that their mother was not a victim. She was a messenger.” In a lively voice devoid of self pity and filled with surprising humor, Fisher tells her story as a woman of emerging strength and hope. Along the way she remembers moments of hilarity ?from the condom company that wanted her endorsement to the elderly nurse who warns Republicans against having sex with mosquitoes. “In a gay, male epidemic,” writes Fisher, “I was a novelty: a dying Republican mother.” Messenger proves that a “novelty” can grow into a woman of strength and wisdom; that a dying young mother can emerge from illness and depression with a convincing sense of humor and healing.

Book Synopsis We Had More To Say by : Raymond Zachary Ortiz
Download or read book We Had More To Say written by Raymond Zachary Ortiz and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ortiz’s poems expand the idea of pilgrimage to include those experiences which touch some profound dimension within, when connections are made with what might be called “soul” or “spirit,” when the tourist becomes the seeker, and sight-seeing magically turns into soul-making. The sacred journey takes us to those liminal places where one dimension touches another. Among many skills and themes, this poet favors transformation: extending the commonplace like a quilt, a grave stone, his grandfather’s shovel into the margins between memory and the sacred. There are many love poems in which the present moment shifts into something grand, wide or deep. The poems in We Had More to Say are also a vivid testimony to how grief or loss can be turned into a blessing. They shift and blend, and meld into another dimension. People move in and out of reality. RAYMOND ZACHARY ORTIZ is a native of Santa Fe with deep roots in Northern New Mexico where his extended family and ancestors have lived for over four centuries. He was first inspired by poetry as a child listening to his grandfather recite poems in the shade of a willow by a ditch after a long day of chores. Poetry has been an integral part of his life since then, initially as he continued listening and reading, then as a student of poetry and literature. He received his BA from the University of Notre Dame, then lived in Costa Rica while volunteering as a social worker. He continued his formal education at the University of California Berkeley (Boalt Hall) where he received his JD. After over twenty years of law practice in Santa Fe in late 2005, he was appointed district court judge. The pre-dawn hour often finds him at a small table in a dark part of the house, writing out poems in longhand by candlelight.

Download or read book Selected Letters written by Jane Austen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of her personal letters, Jane Austen wrote "Little Matters they are to be sure, but highly important." In fact, letter-writing was something of an addiction for young women of Jane Austen's time and in her social position, and Austen's letters have a freedom and familiarity that only intimate writing can convey. Wiser than her critics, who were disappointed that her correspondence dwelt on gossip and the minutiae of everyday living, Austen understood the importance of "Little Matters," of the emotional and material details of individual lives shared with friends and family through the medium of the letter. Ironic, acerbic, always entertaining, Jane Austen's letters are a fascinating record not only of her own day-to-day existence, but of the pleasures and frustrations experienced by women of her social class which are so central to her novels. Vivien Jones's selection includes nearly two-thirds of Austen's surviving correspondence, and her lively introduction and notes set the novelist's most private writings in their wider cultural context.
