Book Synopsis We Are Going to Be Lucky by : Elizabeth L. Fox
Download or read book We Are Going to Be Lucky written by Elizabeth L. Fox and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tells the story of a young couple in love during World War II, and the difficulties they faced both at war and on the home front. We Are Going to Be Lucky tells the story of a first-generation Jewish American couple separated by war, captured in their own words. Lenny and Diana Miller were married just one year before America entered World War II. Deeply committed to social justice and bonded by love, both vowed to write to one another daily after Lenny enlisted in 1943. As Lenny made his way through basic training in Mississippi to the beaches of Normandy and eventually to the Battle of the Bulge, Diana struggled financially, giving up her job as a machinist to become a mother. Their contributions to the war effortLennys crucial missions as an Army scout and Dianas work in the Brooklyn Navy Yardare the backdrop to their daily correspondence, including insightful discussions of democracy, politics, and economic hardship. Faced with grueling conditions overseas, Lenny managed to preserve every letter his wife sent, mailing them back to her for safekeeping. The couples extraordinary letters, preserved in their entirety, reveal and reflect the excruciating personal sacrifices endured by both soldiers at war and their young families back home. After decades of gathering dust, their words have been carefully transcribed and thoughtfully edited and annotated by Elizabeth L. Fox, Lenny and Dianas daughter. This beautiful book reveals both the quotidian lives on the military and home front as well as big political issues of the day like the death of Mussolini and the fight against fascism. Throughout it all, the reader gets glimpses of American society through a first-generation Jewish American perspective as they comment on the mundane details of daily finances as well as looming issues like racial politics in the wartime United States. The result is a pure joy and a window into a lost world. David Shneer, author of Through Soviet Jewish Eyes: Photography, War, and the Holocaust At the heart of this fascinating and educational tale about a soldier and his wife during wartime is a wonderful love story. Lenny and Diana become relatable almost immediately. Their excitement at their experiencesthe eagerness with which they anticipate their few reunions, the battles he is in, the pregnancy and birth of their daughterdraws readers in and allows them to live through the era as ordinary people experienced it day in and day out. Richard Aquila, author of Home Front Soldier: The Story of a GI and His Italian American Family During World War II This is a truly remarkable story, contextualized just enough by the editor to provide the reader with a sufficient understanding of the history of the times without taking away the daily realities of a young couple making their way through letters and the occasional souvenir, till their final reunion. It pulls you in in such a way that you will not want to put the book down until the finish. Melissa Suzanne Fisher, author of Wall Street Women The correspondence of Lenny and Diana is a compelling account of the war though the eyes of an American soldier in Europe and his wife who stayed in the United States. The drama centers on the birth of their first child in America and Lennys increasingly dangerous war. Lenny was to go on to become an eminent scholar of John Milton, and these letters show the young scholar at work, struggling to obtain research materials while recovering from serious injuries sustained at the Battle of the Bulge. Gordon Campbell, University of Leicester Is there any genre of writing more immediate and soul-bearing than the love letter? In We Are Going to Be Lucky, Elizabeth L. Fox allows us inside the lives of one New York couple as they endure the challenges of living apart through World War IILenny from the battlefront and Diana at home in Brooklyn. From arduous training to the difficulties of factory work, from the hopefulness of pregnancy to a near-fatal injury and painful convalescence, this carefully edited collection of correspondence reveals the pain, sacrifice, and everyday strugglesand magnanimityof the Greatest Generation, and the universal beauty of human connection. Julie Scelfo, author of The Women Who Made New York
Book Synopsis "Lucky" Little Strikes Out by : Toni Richards
Download or read book "Lucky" Little Strikes Out written by Toni Richards and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into an ordinary working class family, William James Little would have expected to live an ordinary life. A childhood accident left him unable to join in the usual outdoor sporting activities, but a couple of chance encounters, in his mid-teens, introduced him to the pleasures of indoor activities, with many willing companions, earning him the added title of “Lucky”. In a five year period from the age of eighteen he lost, through accident or fatal illness, all the members of his family and, most tragic of all, the only girl he ever loved. Although he gained an accountancy qualification he was content to meander through the rest of his life. A casual invitation to a dinner changed that. At the age of thirty eight he was forced into an unwanted marriage, to a girl half his age, part of a family whose business associates were involved with criminal activities. Within two years a number of deaths had occurred and his life, or freedom, was in danger from those associates and as the main suspect of the police. He needed to strike out and away from both organisations but, due to his consideration for the welfare of his wife's young housemaid, who he treated as a daughter, he delayed his departure. With help from unexpected quarters, he managed to escape half way round the world. Following an unexpected meeting he faced his ultimate destiny.

Download or read book Damn Lucky written by Kevin Maurer and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Kevin Maurer—the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning coauthor of No Easy Day—comes the true story of a World War II bomber pilot who survived twenty-five missions in Damn Lucky, “an epic, thrillingly written, utterly immersive account of a very lucky, incredible survivor of the war in the skies to defeat Hitler” (New York Times bestselling author Alex Kershaw). “We were young citizen-soldiers, terribly naive and gullible about what we would be confronted with in the air war over Europe and the profound effect it would have upon every fiber of our being for the rest of our lives. We were all afraid, but it was beyond our power to quit. We volunteered for the service and, once trained and overseas, felt we had no choice but to fulfill the mission assigned. My hope is that this book honors the men with whom I served by telling the truth about what it took to climb into the cold blue and fight for our lives over and over again.” —John “Lucky” Luckadoo, Major, USAF (Ret.) 100th Bomb Group (H) Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was a world away from John Luckadoo’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. But when the Japanese attacked the American naval base on December 7, 1941, he didn’t hesitate to join the military. Trained as a pilot with the United States Air Force, Second Lieutenant Luckadoo was assigned to the 100th Bomb Group stationed in Thorpe Abbotts, England. Between June and October 1943, he flew B-17 Flying Fortresses over France and Germany on bombing runs devised to destroy the Nazi war machine. With a shrapnel torn Bible in his flight jacket pocket and his girlfriend’s silk stocking around his neck like a scarf as talismans, Luckadoo piloted through Luftwaffe machine-gun fire and antiaircraft flak while enduring subzero temperatures to complete twenty-five missions and his combat service. The average bomber crew rarely survived after eight to twelve missions. Knowing far too many airmen who wouldn’t be returning home, Luckadoo closed off his emotions and focused on his tasks to finish his tour of duty one moment at a time, realizing his success was more about being lucky than being skilled. Drawn from Luckadoo’s firsthand accounts, acclaimed war correspondent Kevin Maurer shares his extraordinary tale from war to peacetime, uncovering astonishing feats of bravery during the bloodiest military campaign in aviation history, and presenting an incredible portrait of a young man’s coming-of-age during the world’s most devastating war.

This book was released on 2015-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by Times Square Press, New York. Humans follow certain calendars. The most common one is the Gregorian Calendar, which is a reflection of the Christian faith. It is younger than the Muslim calendar, which in turn, is younger than the Jewish calendar. All of these are considerably younger than the Ulema and the Rouhaniyiin calendar, which is the only one used by the Rouhaniyiin and Ulema. The Enlightened Masters reject the idea that the week consists of seven days. Their week consists of four days, corresponding to certain days of our week. These are the only days to use in this technique, and the other three days in our week should not be considered. The importance of these days is the relationship between the person and the hours in each day. Using the calendar of the Rouhaniyiin and Ulema, each person can find the luckiest hour of his or her week, according to the Book of Ramadosh (Rama-Dosh).
