Download or read book Learning to Stand and Speak written by Mary Kelley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education was decisive in recasting women's subjectivity and the lived reality of their collective experience in post-Revolutionary and antebellum America. Asking how and why women shaped their lives anew through education, Mary Kelley measures the significant transformation in individual and social identities fostered by female academies and seminaries. Constituted in a curriculum that matched the course of study at male colleges, women's liberal learning, Kelley argues, played a key role in one of the most profound changes in gender relations in the nation's history: the movement of women into public life. By the 1850s, the large majority of women deeply engaged in public life as educators, writers, editors, and reformers had been schooled at female academies and seminaries. Although most women did not enter these professions, many participated in networks of readers, literary societies, or voluntary associations that became the basis for benevolent societies, reform movements, and activism in the antebellum period. Kelley's analysis demonstrates that female academies and seminaries taught women crucial writing, oration, and reasoning skills that prepared them to claim the rights and obligations of citizenship.

Book Synopsis Sounding Feminine by : David Kennerley
Download or read book Sounding Feminine written by David Kennerley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1780 and 1850, the growing prominence of female singers in Britain's professional and amateur spheres opened a fraught discourse about women's engagement with musical culture. Protestant evangelical gender ideology framed the powerful, well-trained, and expressive female voice as a sign of inner moral corruption, while more restrained and delicate vocal styles were seen as indicative of the performer's virtuous femininity. Yet far from everyone was of this persuasion, and those from alternative class and religious milieux responded in more affirmative ways to the sound of professional female voices. The meanings listeners ascribed to women's voices reflect crucial developments in the musical world of the period, such as the popularity of particular genres with audiences of certain social backgrounds, and the reasons underpinning the development of prevalent types of nineteenth-century professional female vocality. Sounding Feminine traces the development of attitudes towards the female voice that have decisively shaped modern British society and culture. Arguing for the importance of the aural dimension of the past, author David Kennerley draws from a variety of fields-including sound studies, sensory histories, and gender theory-to examine how audiences heard different kinds of femininities in the voices of British female singers. Sounding Feminine explores the intense divisions over the "correct" use of the female voice, and the intricate links between gender, nationality, class, and religion in ascribing status, purpose, and morality to female singing. Through this lens, Kennerley also explores the formation of British middle-class identities and the cultural impact of the evangelical revival-deepening our understanding of this period of transformational change in British culture.

This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the controversy over the education of women in the second half of the eighteenth century, and in particular the influence of Rousseau’s Émile. It includes extracts from the writings of men and women, both English and French, and introduces a variety of opinions, putting them in context and tracing the complex way in which writers responded to Rousseau and also to each other’s published views. It contains thirteen textual extracts arranged in chronological order of first publication, to show how the controversy developed over the forty-year period from 1762 to 1799, a time of dramatic political and social change, and in particular the reaction caused by the shock of the French Revolution and the resulting emphasis on women’s domestic role.

Download or read book The Works of Mary Wollstonecraft written by Marilyn Butler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 2512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seven-volume collection brings together the known works of Mary Wollstonecraft, the eighteenth-century philosopher, writer and women’s rights advocate. Condemned by her contemporaries for her unconventional lifestyle, Wollstonecraft was later recognised as a founding figure of the feminist movement. She was also an acute observer of the political upheavals of the French revolution and advocated educational reform. Wollstonecraft’s writings, which include A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and Thoughts on the Education of Daughters, are recognised as cornerstone texts in the development of feminist thought. This book is therefore a vital reference to the student of feminist history, and will also be of value to any reader interested in the origins of feminism.

Book excerpt: Many modern conservatives and feminists trace the roots of their ideologies, respectively, to Edmund Burke (1729-1797) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797). Here, according to the author Burke is misconstrued if viewed as mainly providing a warning about the dangers of attempting to turn utopian visions into political reality.
