Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Travel From Different Lands The custom of writing a preface to any book which may be sent out into the world, is so universal, that I but follow in the footsteps of others in writing one for mine. These letters have been written at different times, some of them as far back as 1872. A few of them were originally published in the New York World. Many have appeared in the Times-Republican, of Marshalltown, Iowa, the present year. Often written in haste, and under great disadvantages, I do not claim for them great literary merit or descriptions of lands and scenes not often described by others. I have simply aimed to instruct a little, amuse some, and entertain the readers as well. If this little volume pleases my friends and helps to make others, I shall be satisfied. I will dedicate it to Hon. J. L. Williams, Gen. B. A. Beeson, Geo. B. McCord, Tom McElroy, E. H. Hibben, all of Marshalltown, Iowa, and to A. Casteller, banker, of Blair, Nebraska, all of whom have helped bear the financial risk of the publication; also to my wife, Eme Sanford, who, of course, regards this as the most wonderful work of the Nineteenth Century. Book Synopsis Letters from Russia by : Marquis de Custine
Download or read book Letters from Russia written by Marquis de Custine and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marquis de Custine's unique perspective on a vast, fascinating country in the grip of oppressive tyranny In 1839, encouraged by his friend Balzac, Custine set out to explore Russia. His impressions turned into what is perhaps the greatest and most influential of all books about Russia under the Tsars. Rich in anecdotes as much about the court of Tsar Nicholas as the streets of St Petersburg, Custine is as brilliant writing about the Kremlin as he is about the great northern landscapes. An immediate bestseller on publication, Custine's book is also a central book for any discussion of 19th century history, as - like de Tocqueville's Democracy in America - it dramatizes far broader questions about the nature of government and society.

Book Synopsis A Tour of Reconstruction by : Anna Elizabeth Dickinson
Download or read book A Tour of Reconstruction written by Anna Elizabeth Dickinson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Dickinson’s career as an orator began in her teenage years, when she gave her first impassioned speech on women’s rights. By the age of twenty-one, she was spending at least six months per year on the road, delivering lectures on abolitionism, politics, and public affairs, and establishing herself as one of the nation’s first celebrities. In March 1875, Dickinson departed from Washington, D.C., for an extended tour of the South, curious to see how far the region had progressed in the decade after Appomattox. In A Tour of Reconstruction, editor J. Matthew Gallman compiles Dickinson’s commentary and observations to provide an honest depiction of the postwar South from the perspective of an outspoken radical abolitionist. She documents the continuing effects of the Civil War on the places she visited, and true to her inquisitive spirit, questions the societal developments she witnessed, seeking out black and white southerners to discuss issues of the day. Like many northern observers, she focuses on documenting race relations and the state of the southern economy, but she also details the public’s reactions to her appearances, providing some of her most telling commentary. A Tour of Reconstruction, punctuated with a wealth of historical observations and entertaining anecdotes, is the story of one woman’s experiences in the postbellum South.

Enriched by Jules Feiffer’s splendid illustrations, the wit, wisdom, and wordplay of Norton Juster’s offbeat fantasy are as beguiling as ever. “Comes up bright and new every time I read it . . . it will continue to charm and delight for a very long time yet. And teach us some wisdom, too.” --Phillip Pullman For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams!
