These letters have been written at different times, some of them as far back as 1872. A few of them were originally published in the New York World. Many have appeared in the Times-Republican, of Marshalltown, Iowa, the present year. Often written in haste, and under great disadvantages, I do not claim for them great literary merit or descriptions of lands and scenes not often described by others. I have simply aimed to instruct a little, amuse some, and entertain the readers as well. If this little volume pleases my friends and helps to make others, I shall be satisfied.
