Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Hugh Earl Percy From Boston and New York, 1774-1776 1 878, and printed October 14th, in which he said Percy's letters, and many other family documents, have been generously placed at my disposal by His Grace the Duke of Northumberland. I have made numerous extracts, touching upon events 'of 177 5, which I may give to friends at home, in some form, after my return. His sudden death in February 1900, occurred before they had been given to the public 1n any printed form, and before he had ex pressed any wish concerning their publication. His sister, Miss Ellen Carruth, very kindly allowed me to make this use of her brother's copies after I had submitted them to the present Duke, at whose re quest certam references to family matters have been omitted. To Mr. Lindsay Swift and to other friends I am indebted for helpful suggestions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis America's First Battles, 1776-1965 by : Charles E. Heller
Download or read book America's First Battles, 1776-1965 written by Charles E. Heller and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a collection of eleven original essays by many of the foremost U.S. military historians, focuses on the transition of the Army from parade ground to battleground in each of nine wars the United States has fought. Through careful analysis of organization, training, and tactical doctrine, each essay seeks to explain the strengths and weaknesses evidenced by the outcome of the first significant engagement or campaign of the war. The concluding essay sets out to synthesize the findings and to discover whether or not American first battles manifest a characteristic "rhythm." America's First Battles provides a novel and intellectually challenging view of how America has prepared for war and how operations and tactics have changed over time. The thrust of the book, the emphasis on operational history, is at the forefront of scholarly activity in military history. This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.
Book Synopsis Revolutionary America, 1763-1815 by : Francis D. Cogliano
Download or read book Revolutionary America, 1763-1815 written by Francis D. Cogliano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Revolution describes and explains the crucial events in the history of the United States between 1763 and 1815, when settlers in North America rebelled against British authority, won their independence in a long and bloddy stuggle and created an enduring republic. Placing the political revolution at the core of the story, this book considers: * the deterioration of the relationship between Britain and the American colonists * the Wars of Independence * the creation of the republican government and the ratification of the United States Constitution * the trials and tribulations of the first years of the new republic. The American Revolution also examines those who paradoxically were excluded from the political life of the new republic and the American claim to uphold the principle that all men are created equal. In particular this book describes the experiences of women who were often denied the rights of citizens, Native Americans and African Americans. The American Revolution is an important book for all students of the American past.
Book Synopsis With Zeal and With Bayonets Only by : Matthew H. Spring
Download or read book With Zeal and With Bayonets Only written by Matthew H. Spring and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image is indelible: densely packed lines of slow-moving Redcoats picked off by American sharpshooters. Now Matthew H. Spring reveals how British infantry in the American Revolutionary War really fought. This groundbreaking book offers a new analysis of the British Army during the “American rebellion” at both operational and tactical levels. Presenting fresh insights into the speed of British tactical movements, Spring discloses how the system for training the army prior to 1775 was overhauled and adapted to the peculiar conditions confronting it in North America. First scrutinizing such operational problems as logistics, manpower shortages, and poor intelligence, Spring then focuses on battlefield tactics to examine how troops marched to the battlefield, deployed, advanced, and fought. In particular, he documents the use of turning movements, the loosening of formations, and a reliance on bayonet-oriented shock tactics, and he also highlights the army’s ability to tailor its tactical methods to local conditions. Written with flair and a wealth of details that will engage scholars and history enthusiasts alike, With Zeal and with Bayonets Only offers a thorough reinterpretation of how the British Army’s North American campaign progressed and invites serious reassessment of most of its battles.
