Book excerpt: This collection of official documents sheds light on the process of naturalization in England and Ireland during the early modern period. The majority of the letters of denization and acts of naturalization were given to Huguenot refugees who had fled religious persecution in France. The documents provide crucial information about the lives and experiences of these immigrants, as well as their contributions to British and Irish society. Historians and genealogists alike will find this volume to be an invaluable resource. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The co-monarchy of Mary I and Philip II put England at the heart of early modern Europe. This positive reassessment of their joint reign counters a series of parochial, misogynist and anti-Catholic assumptions, correcting the many myths that have grown up around the marriage and explaining the reasons for its persistent marginalisation in the historiography of sixteenth-century England. Using new archival discoveries and original sources, the book argues for Mary as a great Catholic queen, while fleshing out Philip’s important contributions as king of England. It demonstrates the many positive achievements of this dynastic union in everything from culture, music and art to cartography, commerce and exploration. An important corrective for anyone interested in the history of Tudor England and Habsburg Spain.

Book excerpt: This extensively-researched two-volume series offers a detailed account of "the coming of the persecuted Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces [New England] now comprehended within the United States....The volumes now submitted to the public treat first of these antecedent movements, and then take up the narrative of the events that led to the more considerable and more effective emigration, in the latter years of the seventeenth century." This very readable narrative history is rich with details about persons, places and events. Much of the information preserved on these pages was gleaned from unpublished documents found in the United States, France and England: "Manuscripts in the possession of the descendants of refugees; memorials, petitions, wills, and other papers on file in public offices;" as well as numerous church records and other original documents. Volume I includes: Attempted Settlements in Brazil and Florida, Under the Edict: Acadia and Canada, New Netherland, The Antilles, Approach of the Revocation, and The Revocation: Flight from La Rochelle and Aunis. Illustrations, maps, and an appendix enhance the text. An index to full-names, places and subjects for both volumes is contained in Volume II.

Book excerpt: This book examines, for the first time, the history of the social, cultural, political and economic presence of the French in London, and explores the multiple ways in which this presence has contributed to the life of the city. The capital has often provided a place of refuge, from the Huguenots in the 17th century, through the period of the French Revolution, to various exile communities during the 19th century, and on to the Free French in the Second World War.It also considers the generation of French citizens who settled in post-war London, and goes on to provide insights into the contemporary French presence by assessing the motives and lives of French people seeking new opportunities in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It analyses the impact that the French have had historically, and continue to have, on London life in the arts, gastronomy, business, industry and education, manifest in diverse places and institutions from the religious to the political via the educational, to the commercial and creative industries.

Book excerpt: The period from 1790 to 1803, one of upheaval and turbulence, has witnessed a surge in historical interest in the past two decades. This study examines the politicisation and rebellion in County Kildare. During the 1790s, a vocal liberal establishment centered on the Duke of Leinster, Catholic and reformist politics, militant Defenderism, and a large United Irish society involving prominent liberals, all of which contributed to the politicisation of the Kildare populace. Against this background a faction loyal to the Dublin government attempted to stabilize and secure the county, with the increasing support of the administration. The 1798 rebellion engulfed Kildare, lasting two months and involving thousands of rebels. After initial success it evolved into a 'fugitive' war centered on the Bog of Allen, where rebels held government forces at bay for weeks. During the post-rebellion period radicalism persisted at a local level and thousands of Kildare men were prepared to participate in 'Emmet's rebellion' in 1803. In examining Kildare in this period the study seeks to contribute to the wider debate on the forces of radicalism and reaction which polarized Irish society in the 1790s. -- Publisher description.
