Book excerpt: Situated in the heart of London's Holland Park are the remains of Holland House-the site of what was once England's most celebrated political salon. In the first thirty years of the nineteenth century -when the Whig party were almost constantly out of office-the home of the third Lord Holland became the unofficial centre of the Opposition. Devoted to the ideals of Charles James Fox-the prominent Whig statesman who was also Lord Holland's uncle-and enriched by the progressive views of a new generation of writers, critics and politicians, the influence of Holland House permeated the political climate. Combining politics and the arts, the salon attracted the greatest names of the age-Byron, Thomas Macaulay, Talleyrand and Madame de Stael all dined at Holland House. At a time when revolutions threatened to engulf Europe, the Whig tradition of aristocratic liberalism-avoiding the extremes of radicalism and reaction-proved to be one of the chief factors in the peaceful achievement of parliamentary reform, epitomised by the Great Reform Act of 1832. The embodiment of this tradition was Holland House. The salon was presided over by Lady Holland-a magnetic hostess. Beautiful and clever she had left her much-older husband, Sir Godfrey Webster,to marry Lord Holland and as a result was ostracised in many London drawing rooms. But in Holland House, society would come to her. Lady Holland was in the thick of Whig discussions, occasionally following her own political line. She had a special passion for Napoleon and sent him over a thousand books in St Helena. Occupying a key position in the political and cultural life of the age, Holland House was a unique and important force at a time of great political change. Linda Kelly brings to life the colourful world of Holland House, providing a vivid portrait of London's greatest political salon.

Download or read book Sheridan Studies written by James Morwood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-12-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a systematic attempt to establish Sheridan as a major figure in the history of English comedy. Leading scholars address Sheridan's role not only as an outstanding playwright, but also as the manager of Drury Lane Theatre, and his subsequent career as a Member of Parliament. The essays examine the theatrical world in which Sheridan worked, discuss his major plays, and include a modern director's observations on the production of his work today. This is combined with an important re-evaluation of Sheridan's achievements as a master of rhetoric in the political arena, to provide a much needed contemporary assessment of this multifaceted man and his work.

Book excerpt: The first biography of the 18th-century landscape gardener, Uvedale Price, showing the key interconnections between his roles as landowner, art collector, forester, landscaper, connoisseur and scholar. Uvedale Price achieved most fame as the author of the influential Essay on the Picturesque of 1794 in which he argued that the work of the greatest landscape artists, such as Salvator Rosa, Rubens and Claude, should be usedas models for the "improvement of real landscape". His attack on the smooth certainties of Capability Brown sparked off a public controversy, drawing in Richard Payne Knight and Humphry Repton, which became a cause célèbre. This is the first biography of Uvedale Price, bringing out his contradictory and elusive character and revealing an astonishing cast of friends and acquaintances, including Gainsborough, Voltaire, William Wordsworth and ElizabethBarrett Browning. The book shows how he developed his ideas through practical experimentation on his own land and buildings and provides an understanding of the context of Price's practices and theories and the key interconnections between his roles as landowner, art collector, forester, landscaper, connoisseur and scholar. CHARLES WATKINS is Professor of Rural Geography, University of Nottingham; BEN COWELL is Assistant Director, External Affairs, National Trust.

Book Synopsis Benjamin Disraeli Letters by : Benjamin Disraeli
Download or read book Benjamin Disraeli Letters written by Benjamin Disraeli and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1982-04-01 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The private letters of a statesman are always inviting material for historians and when he has claim to literary fame as well the correspondence assumes a double significance. Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) belonged to an age that gave pride of place to the written word as an instrument of both business and pleasure. This volume includes 363 letters (many previously unpublished) from his school boy days to his establishment in the Tory camp under the patronage of Lord Lyndhurst. Most prominent are Disraeli's letters to his sister, Sarah, with whom he corresponded frequently over several decades. To her he confided his hopes, interspersed with his observations and descriptions of social, literary and political events. The letters to Sarah supply a skeleton around which Disraeli's young manhood can be reconstructed and shed valuable light on the remaining documents in the volume. The correspondence also includes accounts of his tour of the Low Countries and the Rhine in 1824, his adventurous trip to Spain, Greece, the Near East and Egypt in 1830, his tense negotiations with publishers and his campaign to shine as a member of aristocratic society and win political patronage. The letters demonstrate the fine eye for detail and the capacity for self-dramatization and literary conceits which mark his novels. With their annotations they also provide a remarkably detailed account of life in the upper reaches of English society as viewed from below, and of Disraeli's ambitions to enter that life.
