Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From China and Some Eastern Sketches The aim of "Letters from China" is to convey an impression of life in the Far East as it appeared to an individual for whom the serious side of any subject has never possessed so powerful an attraction as has its humorous aspect. I offer this explanation in the hope that it may be regarded, by indulgent readers, as a plea in extenuation of the book's many faults. The stories are mainly incidents within the actual experience of the writer, who has attempted to portray them in their own Oriental colouring rather than by means of precisive literary expression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Chinese Official: Being a Western View of Eastern Civilization Three years ago a little volume entitled "Letters from a Chinese Official, being an eastern view of western civilization," was published by McClure, Phillips and Company and at once had a large sale. The author discussed Christian civilization as he found it in England, but in the introduction to the American edition he explained that the arguments presented by him applied with equal force to the United States. His indictment of the inconsistencies of Christians contains so much of truth and his arraignment of the conduct of Christian nations at home and abroad is in some respects so just that his words were received not only with appreciation but with gratitude. I recall how deeply I was myself impressed and how many Americans commented favorably upon his letters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Far East The letters here republished consist of contributions written for the Westminster Gazette during a brief visit to China and Japan in the summer and autumn of 1906, together with some additions. I had travelled before in Kashgaria and the frontier pro vinces of China, reaching them by crossing Asia, but this was my first visit to the coast and the better known provinces of the empire. The main object of my journey was to obtain some practical know ledge of the languages and creeds of the Far East, and, in particular, to study the curious development which Buddhism has undergone in those countries for it is difficult to form a correct and comprehensive idea of the part which this religion has played in the world by the mere study of Sanskrit and Pali litera ture. I trust that I may some day be able to publish the result of these and other investigations in a con nected form. One evening we had quite an unexpected glimpseof the Far East in the form Of a fete in Chinatown. The streets Of the quarter, crowded with Orientals, were brightly lighted and hung with gay flags and banners. The little Chinese girls were adorable with their Shiny braids and daintily colored coats and trousers. The kiddies Of about eight or nine were evidently supposed to be selling confetti to visitors but as a matter Of fact they were Spending most Of their time, boylike, in hurling their wares at the passers-by, though this entailed much ardu ous labor in picking up the scattered bits Of paper and replacing them in the bags in which they were Offered for sale. Keen enjoyment was none the less apparent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dewey, who wrote the letters reproduced in this book, left the United States early in 1919 for a trip to Japan. The trip was eagerly embarked on, as they had desired for many years to see at least something of the Eastern Hemisphere. The journey was to be solely for pleasure, but just before their departure from San Francisco, Professor Dewey was invited, by cable, to lecture at the Imperial University at Tokyo, and later at a number of other points in the Japanese Empire. They traveled and visited in Japan for some three to four months and in May, after a most happy experience, made doubly so by the unexpected courtesies extended them, they decided to go on to China, at least for a few weeks, before returning to the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Citizen of the World, to His Friends in the East, Vol. 1 How comes it, said they, that the Euro peans, so remote from China, think with so much justice and precision They have never read our books, they scarcely know even our letters, and yet they talk and reason just as we do. The truth is, the Chinese and we are pretty much alike. Different degrees of refinement, and not of. Distance, mark the distinctions among mankind. Savages of the most opposite climates have all but one charac ter, of improvidenceand rapacity; and tutored nations, however separate, make use of the very same methods to procure refined enjoy ment. The distinctions of polite nations are. Few but such as are peculiar to_the Chinese, ap pear, in every page of the following corres pondence. The metaphors and illusions are all drawn from the East. Their formality our author carefully preserves. Many of their favourite tenets in morals are illustrated. The Chinese are always concise, so is he. Simple, so is he. The Chinese are grave and senten tious, so is be. But in one particular the resemblance is peculiarly striking: the Chi aese are often dull; and so is he. Nor has my assistance been wanting. We are told in an old romance of a certain knight-errant and his horse who contracted an intimate friend ship. The horse most usually bore the knight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Letter = Writing: For Missionaries The contents of this booklet were prepared to serve as notes for a course of lessons given at the Kuling Language School, but have been considered of use to the missionary community in general. From the Chinese point of view, a missionary's task is to get men to learn the Doctrine, by his first having learnt the language in which that Doc trine is to be expressed. It behoves him, therefore, to learn that language in such a manner as to gain respect for his message, whether it be delivered in a spoken or written form. For the latter, he may be inclined to trust entirely to his Chinese pundit, but both he and his message will command the greater respect if he be able, with his own pen, to write with some degree of fluency. Towards this end, he may gain practice through the medium of amateur letters to a few of his intimate Chinese friends for his faculties of composition for print in his own language have been gained, in the first instance, through practice in letter-writing to his own folks at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ji Yung a Beautiful Gem: Letters From a Chinese Schoolgirl Our pride extends beyond hers to the teacher whose affection and interest helped to mold and mature her pupil. We commend the book to members of young people's societies and to young women who enjoy a charming story. The Oriental setting of this beautiful gem is given in etching only by Miss Watkins in her desire to let Ji Yung portray her own life and character. She entered the Laura Haygood Memorial at thirteen, and then the polishing of the gem began. She remained a heathen several years, and her teacher wrote: "To the daily study of the Bible Ji Yung brought a heart steeped in prejudice." But God laid this young girl on the hearts of her teachers, and the transformation of her life - a miracle of grace - was their reward. The schoolgirl's letters compass the great events of her life - her conversion, marriage, and graduation - and record the fact that after their marriage her husband, a nephew of one of the Grand Councilors of the realm, had entered Soochow University to continue his studies. In Inventing the Alphabet, Johanna Drucker guides readers from antiquity to the present to show how humans have shaped and reshaped their own understanding of this transformative writing tool. From ancient beliefs in the alphabet as a divine gift to growing awareness of its empirical origins through the study of scripts and inscriptions, Drucker describes the frameworks-classical, textual, biblical, graphical, antiquarian, archaeological, paleographic, and political-within which the alphabet's history has been and continues to be constructed. Drucker's book begins in ancient Greece, with the earliest writings on the alphabet's origins. She then explores biblical sources on the topic and medieval preoccupations with the magical properties of individual letters. She later delves into the development of modern archaeological and paleographic tools, and she concludes with the role of alphabetic characters in the digital era. Throughout, she argues that, as a shared form of knowledge technology integrated into every aspect of our lives, the alphabet performs complex cultural, ideological, and technical functions, and her carefully curated selection of images demonstrates how closely the letters we use today still resemble their original appearance millennia ago"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Etchings of the East As a member of the editorial staff of the Christian Advocate (Nashville) the author of this volume, accompanied by his wife, made a journey around the world in 1908. The chief object of the journey was to visit the mission fields in Japan, Korea, China, and India for the purpose of making some study of the people, the methods of missionary work, and the results of missionary labor. Official permission was granted for this long absence from the editorial office with the understanding that each week a letter relating to what was seen should appear in the Christian Advocate. The letters were written in hotels, missionaries homes, and, for the most part, on ocean steamers. Seldom was a letter finished within many miles of the place where it was begun. Careful, painstaking work was impossible. The letters appeared in the Christian Advocate just as they came first from the pen. When the last letter of the series was published, the statement was made that the articles would not be issued in book form. The requests for the publication became so numerous that finally the writer consented to send forth to the reading public the letters just as they appeared in the Christian Advocate. They are published with the earnest hope that some new interest in the non-Christian peoples may be awakened and that some new missionary effort will be put forth as a result of the reading of these letters.
