Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Eighteenth Century America: More "Letters From an American Farmer" Crevecoeur, the American farmer, advancing argu ments against English taxation of his fellow country men, was led into a statement of the difficulties that surrounded the husbandman in the new world. He described the problem of acquiring, from rascally land agents, a bona fide title to a tract on the frontier. He pictured the work of clearing away the trees and difii culties of living alone in the forest. He did not forget the heavy burden of mortgage that pressed on practi cally every frontier holding. Then, when the forest was cleared and the farm established, he told of the early settler's fight with an astonishing variety of natural enemies. In this description he was aided by his great interest in nature and by his acute observation Of the world of birds, animals and insects. Frequently, as in ant-hill Town, Crevecoeur describes wild life for the pure love of nature. In honest disgust he wrote: Strange that you should have in England SO many learned and wise men, and that none should ever have come over here to describe some part of this great field which nature presents. But he took pains to record that this same nature caused the farmer no end of difficulty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in England in 1782, Crevecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer was one of the first works to describe the character of the average American at the close of the Revolutionary War. His famous question, 'ÄúWhat, then, is the American, this new man?'Äù, summarized the European's interest in and questioning of the new country of America at a time when centuries of tradition had just been overturned and post-colonial Americans were attempting to describe themselves in a new way. Through the character of James, the letters celebrate the land of America, its space and fertility, and the character of Americans themselves, their work ethic and spirit of personal determination. The Letters also look at the darker side of American life, particularly the issue of slavery. The discussions of American identity, participation in war (or not), and the perception of immigrants and their ethnicity make this book as relevant to our understanding of ourselves today as it was in 1782.

Book excerpt: St, John (Crèvecœur) wrote these “Letters” during a period of seven years prior to the American Revolutionary War, while farming land near Orange County, New York. They are told from the viewpoint of a fictional narrator in correspondence with an English gentleman, and each letter concerns a different aspect of life or location in the British colonies of America. the letters are written in a spirit of touching simplicity, almost better than Chateaubriand. You'd think neither of them would ever know how many beans make five. This American Farmer tells of the joys of creating a home in the wilderness, and of cultivating the virgin soil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Andrew Rice's autobiography, first published to critical acclaim in 1942, is a remarkable tour through late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century America. When the book was suppressed by the publisher soon after its appearance because of legal threats by a college president described in the book, the nation lost a rich first-person historical account of race and class relations during a critical period—not only during the days of Rice's youth, but at the dawn of the civil rights movement. I Came Out of the Eighteenth Century begins with Rice's childhood on a South Carolina plantation during the post-Reconstruction era. Later Rice moved to Great Britain when he won a Rhodes scholarship, then to the University of Nebraska to accept a professorship. In 1933 he founded Black Mountain College, a legendary progressive college in North Carolina that uniquely combined creative arts, liberal education, self-government, and a work program. Rice's observations of social and working conditions in the Jim Crow South, his chronicle of his own fading Southern aristocratic family, including its famous politicians, and his acerbic portraits of education bureaucrats are memorable and make this book a resource for scholars and a pleasure for lay readers. Historical facts are leavened with wit and insight; black-white relations are recounted with relentless and unsentimental discernment. Rice combines a sociologist's eye with a dramatist's flair in a unique voice. This Southern Classics edition includes a new intro-duction by Mark Bauerlein and an afterword by Rice's grandson William Craig Rice, exposing a new generation of readers to Rice's incisive commentaries on the American South before the 1960s and to the work of a powerful prose stylist.
