Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Form My Friend, the Knight It has been amply demonstrated that the assembling of a party of patriots and the adoption of a constitution does not form a perfect system of government. The constitution may be ever so carefully considered, yet the first thing necessary under it is the passing of laws enforcing its provisions, qualifying or exaggerating its phrases. A vast system of courts is maintained in an effort to make its broad terms fit the varied and intricate interests of humanity. It is acknowledged that a republic and constitutional government is the best that can be secured in a world where selfishness and greed at least have an equal chance with the better qualities of mankind, but sometimes we are heart-sick at the evasion of proper regulation, the contempt for law and order, the trampling upon the rights of the weaker by the very fact of the law's imperfections. Sometimes we wish there were a good king or a brave Knight going about correcting these evils that a cold, inanimate force called law is not able to remedy. Sometimes we wish there were a higher law that would consider nothing but justice and equity. It is thoughts like these that started the Knight of the Twentieth Century upon his mission. Whether we approve of all his acts or not, we agree with his reasoning and applaud his good intentions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It will be understood that the sermon dealt only with the more general aspects of his career. My personal acquaintance with him was too late and too slight to justify any detailed criticism or eulogy. Let me freely speak to you of this patriarch of our national Church in his two capacities of a universal scholar and of a wise ecclesiastical statesman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Citizen of the World, to His Friends in the East, Vol. 1 How comes it, said they, that the Euro peans, so remote from China, think with so much justice and precision They have never read our books, they scarcely know even our letters, and yet they talk and reason just as we do. The truth is, the Chinese and we are pretty much alike. Different degrees of refinement, and not of. Distance, mark the distinctions among mankind. Savages of the most opposite climates have all but one charac ter, of improvidenceand rapacity; and tutored nations, however separate, make use of the very same methods to procure refined enjoy ment. The distinctions of polite nations are. Few but such as are peculiar to_the Chinese, ap pear, in every page of the following corres pondence. The metaphors and illusions are all drawn from the East. Their formality our author carefully preserves. Many of their favourite tenets in morals are illustrated. The Chinese are always concise, so is he. Simple, so is he. The Chinese are grave and senten tious, so is be. But in one particular the resemblance is peculiarly striking: the Chi aese are often dull; and so is he. Nor has my assistance been wanting. We are told in an old romance of a certain knight-errant and his horse who contracted an intimate friend ship. The horse most usually bore the knight. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and riveting record of both literary and social value. Frank Sargeson is one of New Zealand's best-loved and most important writers. Besides the ground-breaking short stories, he wrote memoirs, novels, and plays. He encouraged at least three generations of younger writers and, for most of his adult life, the famous bach behind the hedge at 14 Esmonde Road was at the heart of New Zealand's artistic and literary world. Sargeson was also a prolific letter writer, and this selection of 500 of the most fascinating ranges over half a century, from 1927 to 1981. The letters are immensely readable, vividly capturing his life and times, his milieu and his personality. Frank loved gossip, could be bitchy and peevish, but also kind, affectionate, funny, ribald, astute. This collection, selected, edited and annotated by Sarah Shieff, is a document of extraordinary significance for all those interested in New Zealand's literary and social history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rilke's timeless letters about poetry, sensitive observation, and the complicated workings of the human heart. Born in 1875, the great German lyric poet Rainer Maria Rilke published his first collection of poems in 1898 and went on to become renowned for his delicate depiction of the workings of the human heart. Drawn by some sympathetic note in his poems, young people often wrote to Rilke with their problems and hopes. From 1903 to 1908 Rilke wrote a series of remarkable responses to a young, would-be poet on poetry and on surviving as a sensitive observer in a harsh world. Those letters, still a fresh source of inspiration and insight, are accompanied here by a chronicle of Rilke's life that shows what he was experiencing in his own relationship to life and work when he wrote them.
