Book Synopsis Women's Place in Pope's World by : Valerie Rumbold
Download or read book Women's Place in Pope's World written by Valerie Rumbold and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-09-29 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How was Alexander Pope's personal experience of women transformed into poetry? How characteristic of his age was Pope's attitude toward women? What was the influence of individual women such as his mother, Patty Blount and Lady Mary Montagu on his life and work? Valerie Rumbold's is the first full-length study to address these issues. Referring to previously unexploited manuscripts, she focuses both on Pope's own life and art, and on early eighteenth-century assumptions about women and gender. She offers readings of some of the well-known poems in which women feature prominently, and follows Pope's response throughout his writings in general. The poet's own alienation from the dominant culture (through religion, politics and physical handicap), and his troubled fascination with certain kinds of women, make this subject complex and compelling, with wide implications. Dr. Rumbold provides new insight, and shows how women with whom Pope dealt can themselves be seen as individuals with presence and dignity.

Excerpt: ...(if I may nse so familiar an expression); and if I had not, I should have been very much moved at the tragical end of an only son, born after being so long desired, and at length killed by want of good management, weaning him in the beginning of the winter. Adieu, dear Lady Rich; continue to write to me, and believe none of your goodness is lost upon Your, etc. TO THE COUNTESS OF MAR. Blanfeenburg, Dec. 17, O. S. 17tO. I Received yours, dear sister, the very day I left Hanover. You may easily imagine I was then in too great a hurry to answer it; but you see I take the first opportunity of doing myself that pleasure. I came here the 15th, very late at night, after a terrible journey, in the worst roads and weather that ever poor traveller suffered. I have taken this little fatigue merely to oblige the reigning Empress, and carry a message from her Imperial Majesty to the Duchess, of Rlankenburg, her mother, who is a princess of great address and good-breeding, and may be still called a fine woman. It was so late when I came to this town, I did not think it proper to disturb the Duke and Duchess with the news of my arrival; so I look up my quarters in a misera-r ble inn: but as soon as I had sent my compliments to their highnesses, they immediately sent me their own coach and six horses, which had however enough to do to draw us up the very high hill on which the castle is situated. The Duchess is extremely obliging to me, and this little court is not without its diversions. The Duke tallys at basset every night; and the Duchess tells me, she is so well pleased with my company, that it makes her play less than she used to do. I should find it very difficult to steal time to write, if she was not now at church, where I cannot wait on her, ..
Book Synopsis Sex, Class and Culture by : Lillian Robinson
Download or read book Sex, Class and Culture written by Lillian Robinson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, Sex, Class and Culture is a collection of Marxist feminist essays that develops an original critical theory and applies it to literature, the visual arts, and mass media. Lillian Robinson was the first American critic to suggest the essential connections among sex, class, and race as forces that shape works of art and the critical response to them. In applying her theory to particular texts, she considers topics from the Renaissance epic to the Regency romance, from Jane Austen to contemporary feminist poets, and from factory workers’ memoirs to TV images of career women and housewives. The essays are insightful because Robinson clearly knows this wide assortment of texts, cares about their significance, and writes about them with wit. They are irreverent, because she asserts the feminist critic’s permanent responsibility to ask "So What?" and they are controversial because she constantly addresses that question to our most powerful and respectable institutions – social and literary. This book will be of interest to students of literature, history, gender studies and sexuality studies.
Book Synopsis Women, Writing, and Travel in the Eighteenth Century by : Katrina O'Loughlin
Download or read book Women, Writing, and Travel in the Eighteenth Century written by Katrina O'Loughlin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century witnessed the publication of an unprecedented number of voyages and travels, genuine and fictional. Within a genre distinguished by its diversity, curiosity, and experimental impulses, Katrina O'Loughlin investigates not just how women in the eighteenth century experienced travel, but also how travel writing facilitated their participation in literary and political culture. She canvases a range of accounts by intrepid women, including Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's Turkish Embassy Letters, Lady Craven's Journey through the Crimea to Constantinople, Eliza Justice's A Voyage to Russia, and Anna Maria Falconbridge's Narrative of Two Voyages to the River Sierra Leone. Moving from Ottoman courts to theatres of war, O'Loughlin shows how gender frames access to people and spaces outside Enlightenment and Romantic Britain, and how travel provides women with a powerful cultural form for re-imagining their place in the world.
