Book excerpt: "Gathered together in this slim volume are the selected letters of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the original Jesuit. Ignatius s letters and instructions contain much of his spiritual teaching, and this collection includes 24 missives, most written to his fellow Jesuits, that address both spiritual and practical issues while revealing a warm and compassionate man with a deep reverence for humanity. In this anthology, discover Ignatius s thoughts on materialism, temptation, diligence, meditation, humility, proper penance, and much more. Learn why nearly five centuries after his death Ignatius remains a revered figure both within and without the Roman Catholic community. Spanish priest and spiritual philosopher SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (1491 1556) has been described by Pope Benedict XVI as a man of God, a man of profound prayer, and a faithful servant of the Church. The principal founder of the Society of Jesus, Ignatius was canonized in 1622. His writings include Spiritual Exercises (1522 1524)."

Book excerpt: One of the key figures in Christian history, St. Ignatius of Loyola (c. 1491-1556) was a passionate and unique spiritual thinker and visionary. The works gathered here provide a first-hand, personal introduction to this remarkable character: a man who turned away from the Spanish nobility to create the revolutionary Jesuit Order, inspired by the desire to help people follow Christ. His Reminiscences describe his early life, his religious conversion following near-paralysis in battle, and his spiritual and physical ordeals as he struggled to assist those in need, including plague, persecution and imprisonment. The Spiritual Exercises offer guidelines to those seeking the will of God, and the Spiritual Diary shows Ignatius in daily mystical contact with God during a personal strugg;e. The Letters collected here provide an insight into Ignatius' ceaseless campaign to assist those seeking enlightenment and to direct the young Society of Jesus.

Book Synopsis Counsels of the Holy Spirit by : Patrick Goujon
Download or read book Counsels of the Holy Spirit written by Patrick Goujon and published by Messenger Publications. This book was released on 2021-06-19 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have already been written on spiritual counselling, especially in the Ignatian tradition. But very few consider how Ignatius gave spiritual advice in his letters, directed to various and specific situations. If God really leads us in our spiritual journey, as Ignatius believed, what is the role of the spiritual adviser? What part is played by the numerous rules given in the Spiritual Exercises? The letters show that Ignatius really wanted to give scope to his correspondents and to their awareness of the work of the Holy Spirit within them. Ignatius deployed a “Pedagogy of Consolation” in which his correspondents were trained to exercise their own spiritual agency by discovering God’s abundant gifts. It was clear to Ignatius that a counselling relationship was first grounded in God’s freedom but also in the freedom of the person who asks for assistance. In six chapters, Patrick C. Goujon focuses on eight letters. He offers a careful reading which emphasizes what makes giving spiritual help possible in a conversation. We are shown how Ignatius deals with decision-making and with obstacles in the spiritual life. He is also revealed giving encouragement and correction and advising about how to offer these to others. His aim is to help people grow in freedom which, in turn, permits them to live according to God’s will. Through his letters, we are allowed to enter not only Ignatius’s study, the famous camerata in Rome, but also into his heart. “This volume is an excellent introduction to the letters of Ignatius of Loyola (…) making it an important scholarly contribution not only for those interested in Ignatian spirituality, but also for those interested in the history of spirituality more broadly”, Mark Rotsaert, ARSI
