I have no personal preferences to gratify, either in publishing or withholding. But I cannot at present persuade myself, that they would be likely to possess any special interest beyond a very limited circle. The letters will, for the most part, explain their own history. It will not be necessary, therefore, to go into details here. I should do injustice, however, to my feelings, if I did not refer in a few words to my fellow-travellers, Rev. Mr. Thompson, and Mr. and Mrs. Walcott. Mr. Thompson is the pastor of the Tabernacle Church in New York. I had previously known him in America; and it was with pleasure I met him in London. Mr. Thompson is the editor of the popular and able religious paper, the Independent; and is the author of a number of valuable works. Since his return from his travels, he has published an interesting and well-written volume on Egypt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the images of Oman in British travel writing from 1800 to 1970. In texts that vary from travel accounts to sailors' memoirs, complete travelogues, autobiographies, and letters, it looks at British representations of Oman as a place, people, and culture. The study discusses the current Orientalist debate suggesting alternatives to the dilemma of Orientalism. It also outlines the historical Omani-British relations, and examines the travel accounts written by several British merchants and sailors who stopped in Muscat and other Omani coastal cities in the nineteenth century. Another focus is with the works of travellers who penetrated the Interior of Oman such as James Wellsted and Samuel Miles, and the travellers who explored the southern Oman and the Empty Quarter. Finally the book looks at the last generation of British travellers who were in Oman from 1950 to 1970 employed either by oil companies or the Sultan Said bin Taimur. The gap of knowledge that this book undertakes to fill is that most of the texts under discussion have not been studied in any context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Letters of Richard Cobden (1804-65) aims in four printed volumes to provide the first critical edition of Cobden's letters, publishing the complete text in as near the original form as possible, accompanied by full scholarly apparatus, together with an introduction to each volume re-assessing Cobden's importance in their light. As a whole these volumes will make available a unique source of the understanding of British liberalism in its European and international contexts, throwing new light on issues such as the repeal of the Corn Laws, British radical movements, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, Anglo-French relations, and the American Civil War. The second volume, drawing on over fifty archives world-wide, follows the career of Richard Cobden from that of the 'Manchester Manufacturer' who had gained celebrity in the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 to that of the dominant Radical leader on the British political scene between 1848 and 1853, widely considered by contemporaries equal in importance to the leaders of the Whig and Conservative parties. Cobden in this period was concerned with an inter-connected series of movements which sought in different ways to reduce aristocratic power in Victorian Britain. These included the reform of parliament (especially through the secret ballot), of landownership, of government finances, of the British empire, as well as the introduction of state education. At the same time we see the emergence of Cobden 'the International Man', with a cosmopolitan following, playing a pivotal role in the global peace movement, and articulating a wide-ranging critique of British foreign policy, with regard to the dangers of French invasion, the aftermath of the Revolutions of 1848, British expansionism in India, and the ramifications of the Eastern Question as Britain drifted towards war in the Crimea. Although in his own day, Cobden's radical ideas increasingly separated him from many contemporaries, in the longer term they became a vital tributary of nineteenth-century British and international liberalism.
