Book Synopsis The Grace of Ars by : Frederick L. Miller
Download or read book The Grace of Ars written by Frederick L. Miller and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. John Vianney, the famous Cure of Ars, is the patron saint of all parish priests. Interest in this great saint is always high, but even more because Pope Benedict XVI declared the Year of the Priest and held up John Vianney as the role model for this special year to honor the priesthood. Father Miller has taken many groups of priests and seminarians on pilgrimage to Ars, France, and there he has preached retreats on the life and ministry of Saint John Vianney. This work is based on his many years of personal experience at Ars, and the impact he has seen that the holy Cure has made on those who go there and learn from his inspiring life and work. These beautiful reflections focus on various aspects of the life of Vianney and the way he lived out his priesthood in the aftermath of the French Revolution - a very difficult time for Catholic priests in France. This book reveals that specific Grace of Ars - the unique movement of God that drew hundreds of thousands of people to Ars during his life there to receive the sacrament of reconciliation from Vianney and find peace with God and neighbor. The book will help anyone make a pilgrimage to the very place where St. John Vianney labored so long and so heroically for the good of souls and the love of God - and often in direct battle with Satan. The reader will have the experience of making a retreat in the presence of the saintly Cure, and be able to ponder the Grace of Ars, and especially what he has to say to Priests of the 21st century - another difficult time for those who seek to be faithful to their promises to God and build up the Church of Christ. This work will strengthen priests and seminarians in their vocations and help young men hear the call of Christ to follow him as priests. Laymen will find in this reflection on St. John Vianney a model parish priest who will inspire all to love the priesthood and pray for the sanctification of all priests, and through his holy example the Cure of Ars will help all understand that the priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.
Book Synopsis Forming Fathers: Seminary Wisdom for Every Priest by : Fr. Carter Griffin
Download or read book Forming Fathers: Seminary Wisdom for Every Priest written by Fr. Carter Griffin and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Priests are called to be worthy spiritual fathers to the souls entrusted to their care. Years of seminary formation ideally forge them into faithful, generous, healthy priests, ready to serve the needs of the Church. But priests are not immune to the busyness, pressures, and distractions of a life of ministry. Over time, the lessons from their formation can fade into the background. Forming Fathers: Seminary Wisdom for Every Priest seeks to remind priests of the lessons so greatly needed to fulfill their calling faithfully. Originally delivered by Fr. Carter Griffin as talks to seminarians, this series of short, inspiring vignettes can help rekindle a priest’s first love and awaken the aspirations that brought him into the seminary in the first place. Much of what is contained in these pages is also applicable to Catholic laymen, themselves called to the virtues of Christian manhood, the responsibilities of discipleship, and the dignity of spiritual fatherhood. Fr. Griffin covers such central topics as the life of prayer, offering Holy Mass well, the importance of priestly friendships, and the need for fortitude. He addresses challenging issues, such as chaste celibacy, loving the Church, and living material simplicity, with simple truth. Priests may benefit most, however, from some of the themes that might have been overlooked in their seminary days: the importance of courtesy, the vital role of order and daily exposure to beauty, the virtue of magnanimity and its impact on priestly happiness, and exercising priestly leadership.

Book Synopsis Priestly Identity by : Thomas J. McGovern
Download or read book Priestly Identity written by Thomas J. McGovern and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that since the end of Vatican II there has been a crisis in the Catholic priesthood. This is reflected in two areas in particular--defections from the priesthood and a serious decline in vocations, primarily in the developed countries of the West. John Paul II has addressed this situation many times during his pontificate, especially in Pastores dabo vobis where he offers a clear theological vision and a program of formation to overcome the current crisis of priestly identity. In his new book McGovern offers a deep analysis of the Pope's theology of priesthood, drawing not only from Pastores dabo vobis, but also from his Holy Thursday Letters and other important writings on this topic. In this study the author deals with core aspects of priestly identity under three main headings--theological, spiritual, and pastoral--in the context of service to the lay faithful and the evangelization required of the Church in the new millennium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the psychological and social motivations that influence people to enter the priestly or religious life? Are these motivations easily changed, or do they tend to persist as they were? What dispositions help people to persevere in their vocation, or push them towards leaving? The first volume of the present study, stressing the indispensible action of God's grace, develops an anthropology of the Christian vocation, that is, a Christian vision of what the human person is and can become in answering God's call. The based in philosophical and theological anthropology of the Christian vocation, is earlier psyco-social theory of vocation are made more explicit. On these bases an anthropology of vocation is built up, which respects tradition and at the same time contains new and original ideas, like the notion of three dimensions or three kinds of habitual dispositions in the Christian person as he travels on the journey of vocation. The influence of these three dimensions on the person's ability to assimilate and internalize the value's of Christ is explored. The limits on human freedom which are to be distinguished from psychopathology are discussed.
