Book Synopsis The Troubadour Revival by : Roger Boase
Download or read book The Troubadour Revival written by Roger Boase and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this book argues that the troubadour revival in late medieval Spain was a conservative reaction to social crisis by those who belonged, or were affiliated, to a powerful, expanding and belligerent aristocracy. The crisis was produced by a discrepancy between social theory and social reality which could never be resolved, because the theory was based on the belief in a divinely pre-ordained system of social stratification in which change was inconceivable. The study falls into four parts. The first part analyses the aristocratic theory of medieval society with special reference to Spain. The second part places the troubadour revival in its historical perspective. The third part brings together some relevant documents and the fourth part consists of various appendices. The author applies the insights of history, sociology and economics to problems of literature and demonstrates the importance of the period to late medieval culture both Spanish and European. Although this analysis relies mainly on Spanish sources, the origins of the ideals it examines are to be found in a wider European context, as are the factors that undermine them. Close cultural links between Spain and France are suggested by certain parallels between the Catalan Consistory of the Gay Science and the Court of Love of Charles VI. This book is a must read for scholars and researchers of Spanish literature, Spanish history, and social and cultural history

Book Synopsis The Romance of the Rose and the Making of Fourteenth-Century English Literature by : Philip Knox
Download or read book The Romance of the Rose and the Making of Fourteenth-Century English Literature written by Philip Knox and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romance of the Rose had a transformative effect on the multilingual literary culture of fourteenth-century England, leaving more material evidence for late medieval English-speaking readers than any other vernacular literary work from mainland Europe. This book examines its decisive effect on English literature of the fourteenth century, and new literary experiments it provoked from writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer, John Gower, William Langland, and the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Linking the English afterlife of the Rose to a host of ongoing cultural developments in mainland Europe, The Romance of the Rose and the Making of Fourteenth-Century English Literature reveals the deep interconnectedness of English and European literary culture. Examining courtly, clerical, and classicising orientations towards the text, it presents new arguments for the place of the Rose at the centre of fourteenth-century English literature, and explores its rich manuscript history to reveal new evidence about the cultural significance of this love allegory from thirteenth-century France. The chapters avoid an author-centred approach, arranging readings of the Rose and its relation with English literature in constellations that reveal complex unfolding inter-relation of the diverse readings of the Rose that took place in fourteenth-century England.
