Book Synopsis Letters of a Peruvian Woman by : Françoise de Graffigny
Download or read book Letters of a Peruvian Woman written by Françoise de Graffigny and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It has taken me a long time, my dearest Aza, to fathom the cause of that contempt in which women are held in this country ...' Zilia, an Inca Virgin of the Sun, is captured by the Spanish conquistadores and brutally separated from her lover, Aza. She is rescued and taken to France by Déterville, a nobleman, who is soon captivated by her. One of the most popular novels of the eighteenth century, the Letters of a Peruvian Woman recounts Zilia's feelings on her separation from both her lover and her culture, and her experience of a new and alien society. Françoise de Graffigny's bold and innovative novel clearly appealed to the contemporary taste for the exotic and the timeless appetite for love stories. But by fusing sentimental fiction and social commentary, she also created a new kind of heroine, defined by her intellect as much as her feelings. The novel's controversial ending calls into question traditional assumptions about the role of women both in fiction and society, and about what constitutes 'civilization'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Badly needed updated history of Peruvian-US relations from the series edited by Lester Langley on Latin American-US relations. Traces evolution of diplomatic, military and economic relations between the two nations from independence to late in second term of Fujimori presidency. Emphasizes dominant economic impact of such corporate giants as Cerro de Pasco, Grace, and the International Petroleum Company. Especially interesting and innovative sections of the study are discussions of 'company towns,' the Cornell University Vicos agrarian project (begun in the early 1950s), and the folksy critique of the Fujimori government's drug policy. Offers a highly useful bibliographical essay that will be helpful to both specialist and student alike, in which pertinent web sites are included. Well-suited for classroom use"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

Book Synopsis An Inca Account of the Conquest of Peru by : Titu Cusi Yupanqui
Download or read book An Inca Account of the Conquest of Peru written by Titu Cusi Yupanqui and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available in English for the first time, An Inca Account of the Conquest of Peru is a firsthand account of the Spanish invasion, narrated in 1570 by Diego de Castro Titu Cusi Yupanqui - the penultimate ruler of the Inca dynasty - to a Spanish missionary and transcribed by a mestizo assistant. The resulting hybrid document offers an Inca perspective on the Spanish conquest of Peru, filtered through the monk and his scribe. Titu Cusi tells of his father's maltreatment at the hands of the conquerors; his father's ensuing military campaigns, withdrawal, and murder; and his own succession as ruler. Although he continued to resist Spanish attempts at "pacification," Titu Cusi entertained Spanish missionaries, converted to Christianity, and then, most importantly, narrated his story of the conquest to enlighten Emperor Phillip II about the behavior of the emperor's subjects in Peru. This vivid narrative illuminates the Incan view of the Spanish invaders and offers an important account of indigenous resistance, accommodation, change, and survival in the face of the European conquest. Informed by literary, historical, and anthropological scholarship, Bauer's introduction points out the hybrid elements of Titu Cusi's account, revealing how it merges native Andean and Spanish rhetorical and cultural practices. Book Synopsis The Lettered Mountain by : Frank L. Salomon

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andean peoples joined the world of alphabetic literacy nearly 500 years ago, yet the history of their literacy has remained hidden until now. In The Lettered Mountain, Frank Salomon and Mercedes Niño-Murcia expand notions of literacy and challenge stereotypes of Andean “orality” by analyzing the writings of mountain villagers from Inka times to the Internet era. Their historical ethnography is based on extensive research in the village of Tupicocha, in the central Peruvian province of Huarochirí. The region has a special place in the history of Latin American letters as the home of the unique early-seventeenth-century Quechua-language book explaining Peru’s ancient gods and priesthoods. Granted access to Tupicocha’s surprisingly rich internal archives, Salomon and Niño-Murcia found that legacy reflected in a distinctive version of lettered life developed prior to the arrival of state schools. In their detailed ethnography, writing emerges as a vital practice underlying specifically Andean sacred culture and self-governance. At the same time, the authors find that Andean relations with the nation-state have been disadvantaged by state writing standards developed in dialogue with European academies but not with the rural literate tradition.
