Book excerpt: Let's Keep Talking: Lacanian Tales of Love, Sex, and Other Catastrophes is a collection of original Lacanian case studies of young people today as they struggle with their own modern existential dilemmas of sex and love, life and death. The context, background, and forms of expression may be contemporary, but the clients' problems, structures, and existential dilemmas are quite classic. The five narrative tales highlight the role a Lacanian orientation played in the interactions, formulations, and results, from initial meetings to terminations. Grounded in concrete clinical material, the case studies illuminate specific and universal themes of human suffering and how we can treat that suffering by speaking. Yael Baldwin argues that in our cultural milieu of "connective technologies", and the rise of biotechnology and psychopharmacology in particular, we are in need of mental health treatment methods that highlight talking and relationships as essential to our personhood, our suffering, and our healing and growth. Let's Keep Talking argues that now, more than ever, we need the endeavour of analytic talk therapy.

Book excerpt: 'Thoughtful, very readable ... We have been lucky, lucky, lucky to have him' - The Times 'Pithy and amusing' - Sunday Times David Dimbleby has interviewed prime ministers and presidents, made award-winning documentaries, chaired Question Time for 25 years, and anchored the BBC's live coverage of historic national and world events. KEEP TALKING is David's wry look at his own extraordinary career, and the people, events and controversies he has encountered along the way. As a broadcaster for the BBC, David had an obligation to appear a neutral observer. Now finally 'off the leash' he writes without inhibition but with his characteristic wit, clarity and insight, about monarchy, politics, and the state of Britain. His book is enlivened with honest accounts of broadcasting from the inside - from commentating on Diana's funeral to anchoring ten successive General Election night results programmes. The faux pas, the secrets of the craft and what he was really thinking are shared for the first time. He reveals his own battles with politicians; queries the purpose and effect of political interviews; and considers the power of broadcasting - through programmes such as Question Time - to explore and amplify the public voice. Whilst profoundly British, the book ranges wider, in particular reflecting David's time in many countries, including Southern Africa and the United States. David has been there for us at nearly every major national event of the last fifty years. Serious, outspoken, and leavened with humour, KEEP TALKING reveals how David has seen it all - and is now telling it as he sees it.

Book excerpt: “WE NEED TO TALK.” In this urgent and insightful book, public radio journalist Celeste Headlee shows us how to bridge what divides us--by having real conversations BASED ON THE TED TALK WITH OVER 10 MILLION VIEWS NPR's Best Books of 2017 Winner of the 2017 Silver Nautilus Award in Relationships & Communication “We Need to Talk is an important read for a conversationally-challenged, disconnected age. Headlee is a talented, honest storyteller, and her advice has helped me become a better spouse, friend, and mother.” (Jessica Lahey, author of New York Times bestseller The Gift of Failure) Today most of us communicate from behind electronic screens, and studies show that Americans feel less connected and more divided than ever before. The blame for some of this disconnect can be attributed to our political landscape, but the erosion of our conversational skills as a society lies with us as individuals. And the only way forward, says Headlee, is to start talking to each other. In We Need to Talk, she outlines the strategies that have made her a better conversationalist—and offers simple tools that can improve anyone’s communication. For example: BE THERE OR GO ELSEWHERE. Human beings are incapable of multitasking, and this is especially true of tasks that involve language. Think you can type up a few emails while on a business call, or hold a conversation with your child while texting your spouse? Think again. CHECK YOUR BIAS. The belief that your intelligence protects you from erroneous assumptions can end up making you more vulnerable to them. We all have blind spots that affect the way we view others. Check your bias before you judge someone else. HIDE YOUR PHONE. Don’t just put down your phone, put it away. New research suggests that the mere presence of a cell phone can negatively impact the quality of a conversation. Whether you’re struggling to communicate with your kid’s teacher at school, an employee at work, or the people you love the most—Headlee offers smart strategies that can help us all have conversations that matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Walton and McKersie attempt to describe a comprehensive theory of labor negotiation. The authors abstract and analyze four sets of systems of activities which they believe account for much of the behavior found in labor negotiations. The first system of activities, termed "distributive bargaining," comprises competitive behaviors that are intended to influence the division of limited resources. The second system is made up of activities that increase the joint gain available to the negotiating parties, referred to as "integrative bargaining." They are problem-solving behaviors and other activities which identify, enlarge and act upon the common interests of the parties. The third system includes activities that influence the attitudes of the parties toward each other and affect the basic relationship bonds between the social units involved. This process is referred to as "attitudinal structuring." The fourth system of activities, which occurs as an integral aspect of the inter-party negotiations, comprises the behaviors of a negotiator that are meant to achieve consensus within one's own organizations. This fourth process is called "intra-organizational bargaining." Each sub process has its own set of instrumental acts or tactics. Therefore, each of the four model chapters is followed by a chapter on the tactics which implement the process. These chapters translate the model into tactical assignments and include an abundance of supporting illustrations from actual negotiations. This study should be of interest to several audiences, including students and teachers of industrial relations, social scientists interested in the general field of conflict resolution, as well as practitioners of collective bargaining and other individuals directly involved in international negotiations. The overall theoretical framework has been derived by a mixture of inductive and deductive reasoning. Extensive fieldwork and several dozen printed case studies have provided the bulk of the empirical data. In terms of meaning, the study has three touchstones: the field of collective bargaining; the field of conflict resolutions; and the underlying disciplines of economics, psychology, and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palestine: The Right of Return is a must-read novel that addresses several critical issues facing world leaders who seek a solution to the almost century-long Arab-Israeli conflict. The "Balfour Declaration," issued in 1917, set the conflict in motion. Mr. Bergstrom's story, albeit fiction, should be required reading for anyone hoping to understand the current stalemate. Mr. Bergstrom defines a path to lasting peace via a single state solution. Further, he highlights the problems created by America's well meaning but one-sided intervention on the side of Israel in the peace negotiations. Mr. Bergstrom argues that Palestine's future will not be found in an agreement that divides Palestine into two equally or unequally aggrieved states, further asserting that peace can only come from the efforts of the primary stakeholders, those who will benefit or suffer most immediately through any resolution. The United States, Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, Lebanon, and other interested parties must stand aside. Mr. Bergstrom concludes that the people of Palestine itself own the problem, and they must join together if a workable solution is to be created.

Fundamental features of language are manifest in dialogic speech and in lingua francas. Both are taken on board in this book, which radically widens our conception of reflexivity in discourse. Reflexivity, or metadiscourse, is central to successful communication. It is also vital in understanding academic argumentation, essential to academic self-understanding, and at the same time it has wide applications.

Book excerpt: "It is our sincere hope that this book will mark a turning point in the spiritual evolution of this planet and its restoration to the galactic lineage of nations to which you belong. Make no mistake, this book has the power to change lives -- and Earth history, if you will let it!" -- The Sirian Council of 12 through Beverley Bright Star Familial Integrity is a series of diverse, exciting stories designed to unlock hidden pathways within the reader to reawaken ancient knowledge buried deep within the group consciousness of humanity. These stories explore in depth the concept of familial integrity, the moral foundation for the inhabitants of many other advanced planets and higher dimensions. This idea does not limit itself to the conventionally conceived family unit, but instead promotes harmony within the entire Earth family. When you learn to see all of humanity as your brothers and sisters, you can no longer let anyone starve or deny them adequate food or housing. You cannot cheat, lie, and steal from anyone -- let alone kill them -- when you fully acknowledge them as your own flesh and blood, the family members they truly are. This book outlines the necessary changes that humankind must make for the coming new age in practical ways that can be applied in our daily lives. When the principles of familial integrity are widely accepted, they will serve as a catalyst for global change among individuals and nations, bringing stability, peace, and love to the entire planet.
