Book Synopsis Clinical Interaction and the Analysis of Meaning by : Theo L. Dorpat
Download or read book Clinical Interaction and the Analysis of Meaning written by Theo L. Dorpat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical Interaction and the Analysis of Meaning evinces a therapeutic vitality all too rare in works of theory. Rather than fleeing from the insights of other disciplines, Dorpat and Miller discover in recent research confirmation of the possibilities of psychoanalytic treatment. In Section I, "Critique of Classical Theory," Dorpat proposes a radical revision of the notion of primary process consonant with contemporary cognitive science. Such a revised conception not only enlarges our understanding of the analytic process; it also provides analysis with a conceptual language that can articulate meaningful connections with a growing body of empirical research about the development and nature of human cognition. In Section II, "Interactional Theory," Miller reverses the direction of inquiry. He begins with the literature on cognitive development and functioning, and proceeds to mine it for concepts relevant to the clinical process. He shows how a revised understanding of the operation of cognition and affect can impart new meaning to basic clinical concepts such as resistance, transference, and level of psychopathology. In Section III, "Applications and Exemplifications," Dorpat concludes this exemplary collaboration by exploring select topics from the standpoint of his and Miller's new psychoanalytic theory. At the heart of the authors' endeavor it "meaning analysis," a concept that integrates an up-to-date model of human information processing with the traditional goals of psychoanalysis. The patient approaches the clinical encounter, they argue, with cognitive-affective schemas that are the accumulatice product of his life experience to date; the manifold meanings ascribed to the clinical interaction must be understood as the product of these schemas rather than as distortions deriving from unconscious, drive-related fantasies. The therapist's goal is to make the patient's meaning-making conscious and thus available for introspection.

Download or read book In Your Face written by Mandy Merck and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when "sexy" can be an adjective for anything, when sexual awareness is declared to be advancing faster in months than in the past half century, and when pundits warn of sexual overload, the actual representation of sex is still deemed confrontational, aggressive, "in your face." While critics accuse the academy of an obsession with sexuality, they also complain that nothing that appears to refer to sex really does. In readings ranging across film, drama, opera, fine art, and critical theory, Mandy Merck considers these phenomena as well as the role of the dog in anti-porn propaganda, the unacknowledged significance of the lesbian hand, and the early retirement of the phallus. Other topics include the relationship of women's tennis and prostitution, the gendering of the wild and the tame in the age of AIDS, and the sexlessness of postmodern criticism. In Your Face ends with the face and its alleged desecration by fellatio. Germaine Greer's condemnation of Bill Clinton for "fucking the faces of little girls" is examined in the light of one of Monica Lewinsky's endearments for the President--"fuckface." In a country whose last great Presidential scandal revolved around a key witness known only as "Deep Throat" and whose current Chief Executive works in the "Oral Office," giving head is going down in history. Analyzing the strange relationship of Linda Lovelace, Camille Paglia, and Paul de Man, In Your Face concludes by considering desire and disgust in high and low places.
Book Synopsis Decadent Romanticism: 1780-1914 by : Kostas Boyiopoulos
Download or read book Decadent Romanticism: 1780-1914 written by Kostas Boyiopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Decadent authors, Romanticism was a source of powerful imaginative revisionism, perversion, transition, and partial negation. But for all these strong Decadent reactions against the period, the cultural phenomenon of Decadence shared with Romanticism a mutual distrust of the philosophy of utilitarianism and the aesthetics of neo-Classicism. Reflecting on the interstices between Romantic and Decadent literature, Decadent Romanticism reassesses the diverse and creative reactions of Decadent authors to Romanticism between 1780 and 1914, while also remaining alert to the prescience of the Romantic imagination to envisage its own distorted, darker, perverted, other self. Creative pairings include William Blake and his Decadent critics, the recurring figure of the sphinx in the work of Thomas De Quincey and Decadent writers, and Percy Shelley with both Mathilde Blind and Swinburne. Not surprisingly, John Keats’s works are a particular focus, in essays that explore Keats’s literary and visual legacies and his resonance for writers who considered him an icon of art for art’s sake. Crucial to this critical reassessment are the shared obsessions of Romanticism and Decadence with subjectivity, isolation, addiction, fragmentation, representation, romance, and voyeurism, as well as a poetics of desire and anxieties over the purpose of aestheticism.
Book Synopsis Organ Orgasms by : Robert Ian Rollwagen
Download or read book Organ Orgasms written by Robert Ian Rollwagen and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conscious blood flow (CBF) is about enhancing our physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing through the pleasurable and mindful exercising of your body’s internal arteries and organs. This is brought about by becoming attuned to your natural abilities to just “be” and by learning to sense your interior body, and then being able to consciously direct and control the flow of your blood. And, one can orgasm many organs, hence the book’s title of Organ Orgasms. Despite the catchy (but true) title, this book is about the mystery and joy of experiencing one’s existence in a unique way (an aspect of being), and about discovering our bodies and nourishing them so we can experience our lives in the healthiest and longest way possible (an aspect of wellbeing). Thus, Organ Orgasms is really about being and wellbeing. It will enable people (no matter what stage they are at in life) to see more clearly into themselves, and then use the book as a guide in developing their own personal plan for living more joyously and healthily. Organ Orgasms is not formulaic or like other self-help books, but it will help people learn how to take care of themselves better and get them re-thinking about their purpose in life and ensure their wellbeing. The book is written for the lay reader and includes over 150 extremely useful illustrations. Yet, it has also been cleverly crafted to meet the needs of the scholarly reader by the use of endnotes and appendices, which provide a stunning amount of scientific evidence for how the body, brain and mind work to make CBF possible.

Book Synopsis Ejaculate Responsibly by : Gabrielle Stanley Blair
Download or read book Ejaculate Responsibly written by Gabrielle Stanley Blair and published by Workman Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In Ejaculate Responsibly, Gabrielle Blair offers a provocative reframing of the abortion issue in post-Roe America. In a series of 28 brief arguments, Blair deftly makes the case for moving the abortion debate away from controlling and legislating women’s bodies and instead directs the focus on men’s lack of accountability in preventing unwanted pregnancies. Highly readable, accessible, funny, and unflinching, Blair builds her argument by walking readers through the basics of fertility (men are 50 times more fertile than women), the unfair burden placed on women when it comes to preventing pregnancy (90% of the birth control market is for women), the wrongheaded stigmas around birth control for men (condoms make sex less pleasurable, vasectomies are scary and emasculating), and the counterintuitive reality that men, who are fertile 100% of the time, take little to no responsibility for preventing pregnancy. The result is a compelling and convincing case for placing the responsibility—and burden—of preventing unwanted pregnancies away from women and onto men.
