He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Considering the disadvantages under which they have labored it is really wonderful that American artists, and especially American sculptors, have succeeded in doing such very excellent work as they must be credited with. A sculptor, even more than a painter, needs exactly the kind of training that can only be obtained in a school where the human form is made the basis of study. Dealing with the human form almost exclusively, it is essential that he should study it from a constant succession of living examples. The antiques, it is true, will teach him much, bat there is a great deal that they cannot teach him. Even, however, were it 'possible for a student to learn all that need be learned from the antiques, the fact that a close and exclusive study of them invariably has the effect of stifling real invention and real originality, and of inducing the artist to become a mere copyist of men long dead and gone, is of itself sufficient to compel a sculptor who wishes to preserve his own individuality, to go to the fountain-head from which the great master artists of the classic period drew their inspiration. Rogers when he decided to be a sculptor went to Rome, for it was there that the best opportunities were offered, both for the study of nature and of the noblest remains of antique art. He studied hard for several years, and he then came before the public with two statues which at once gained him celebrity, and placed him in the front rank of the sculptors of the day. It is all there, how to start and utilize a mailing list; there is a discussion on show vehicles and various art displays, (with information on building your own,) show clothing and manners, types of shows, galleries, your home office and computer. Look for letters to Dear Aunt Gabby and her often rather pointed advice. Aunt Gabby has heard it all, from artists and buyers to show promoters. Aunt Gabby is not an art critic,( she thinks there are enough of those), but she can be highly critical of artists and their behaviors. In short, this is a book by an artist for artists, though Gabe does hope that art collectors will find it irresistible, too. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Sculpture Schoolroom decoration - the creation of a beautiful environment which will silently cooperate with the voice of the teacher in the mental, aesthetic and spiritual development of the children - is a movement of ever-increasing importance, and one to which Miss Gertrude L. Brinkhaus has given her attention since the beginning of the year one thousand nine hundred five. At the close of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, where Miss Brinkhaus served as assistant director for the Massachusetts Educational Exhibits, she found herself possessed with the idea of helping along schools and teachers toward the attainment of schoolroom decoration by presenting to them the beautiful in sculpture - the masterpieces of the world. It was one thing to wish to do and another to hit upon a plan of doing, but suddenly there came to her the thought that newspapers must give collections of sculpture and that the schools to receive the gifts should be decided upon by means of a voting contest. The publisher of the Boston Herald was first approached, and the plan met with his hearty approval and support. An interesting contest was the result. Next, the originator was invited to Washington, D. C., by the Evening Star, and in June of this year closed a period of work, decorating some of the schools of Chicago through the Chicago Record-Heraid. Through the generosity of the Times-Dispatch, the end of this year will see many schools in Richmond, Va., beautified by this same plan, under Miss Brinkhaus's personal direction. In pursuing her work, Miss Brinkhaus has always used sculpture, not because she does not believe in pictures, but because she believes in teaching the child the beautiful in form. Commenting on the plan, one of the members of the Chicago Board of Education, a lady who had made a special study of art in the best schools of Europe, said: "The presence and the study of sculpture in the schools, not only develops the artistic sense of the pupils and refines their ideals and instincts, but also has a power to impart psychologic insight. When I was in the Paris schools, we were impressed with the fact that the expression of character was the first and most important thing in the study of sculpture. In gazing on the outlines of the sculptured face the young child gradually grows into an understanding of the emotions which are there given form, and thus learns a valuable lesson in the reading of human character."
