Book Synopsis Nathan Bedford Forrest by : Nathan Bedford Forrest
Download or read book Nathan Bedford Forrest written by Nathan Bedford Forrest and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-28 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Civil War biography sheds new light on the life of the legendary Confederate general before, during, and after the conflict that defined his legacy. Shelby Foote called Nathan Bedford Forrest one of the most authentic geniuses produced by the American Civil War, and Ulysses S. Grant said that Forrest was the only Confederate cavalry leader he feared. Sherman wanted him killed even if doing so broke the broke the Federal treasury and cost ten thousand lives. Arguably the best cavalry leader of the Civil War and undoubtedly one of the greatest in the history of mounted warfare, Nathan Bedford Forrest has been acclaimed and vilified, revered and hated, and still he is a man whose life defies categorization. This in-depth biography goes beyond Forrest’s war exploits. Here, historians Eddy W. Davison and Daniel Foxx depict a man as complex, brilliant, revolutionary, and tragic as the times in which he lived. In addition to revealing details about his childhood, marriage, and life as a businessman and civic leader, this comprehensive biography explains the alleged massacre at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, and the reasons for Forrest’s leadership in the Ku Klux Klan.

Book Synopsis Through the Heart of Dixie by : Anne Sarah Rubin
Download or read book Through the Heart of Dixie written by Anne Sarah Rubin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherman's March, cutting a path through Georgia and the Carolinas, is among the most symbolically potent events of the Civil War. In Through the Heart of Dixie, Anne Sarah Rubin uncovers and unpacks stories and myths about the March from a wide variety of sources, including African Americans, women, Union soldiers, Confederates, and even Sherman himself. Drawing her evidence from an array of media, including travel accounts, memoirs, literature, films, and newspapers, Rubin uses the competing and contradictory stories as a lens into the ways that American thinking about the Civil War has changed over time. Compiling and analyzing the discordant stories around the March, and considering significant cultural artifacts such as George Barnard's 1866 Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind, and E. L. Doctorow's The March, Rubin creates a cohesive narrative that unites seemingly incompatible myths and asserts the metaphorical importance of Sherman's March to Americans' memory of the Civil War. The book is enhanced by a digital history project, which can be found at shermansmarch.org.

Book Synopsis Black Stereotypes in Popular Series Fiction, 1851-1955 by : Bernard A. Drew
Download or read book Black Stereotypes in Popular Series Fiction, 1851-1955 written by Bernard A. Drew and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even well-meaning fiction writers of the late Jim Crow era (1900-1955) perpetuated racial stereotypes in their depiction of black characters. From 1918 to 1952, Octavus Roy Cohen turned out a remarkable 360 short stories featuring Florian Slappey and the schemers, romancers and ditzes of Birmingham's Darktown for The Saturday Evening Post and other publications. Cohen said, "I received a great deal of mail from Negroes and I have never found any resentment from a one of them." The black readership had to be satisfied with any black presence in the popular literature of the day. The best known white writers of black characters included Booth Tarkington (Herman and Verman in the Penrod books), Irvin S. Cobb (Judge Priest's houseman Jeff Poindexter), Roark Bradford (Widow Duck, the plantation matriarch), Hugh Wiley (Wildcat Marsden, the war veteran who traveled the country in the company of his goat) and Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden (radio's Amos 'n' Andy). These writers deservedly declined in the civil rights era, but left a curious legacy that deserves examination. This book, focusing on authors of series fiction and particularly of humorous stories, profiles 29 writers and their black characters in detail, with brief entries covering 72 others.

Book Synopsis After Winter by : John Edgar Tidwell
Download or read book After Winter written by John Edgar Tidwell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-09 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than sixty years, Sterling A. Brown -- poet, folklorist, cultural critic, literary historian, teacher, and raconteur -- profoundly shaped the development of African American literary and cultural studies. A collection of new and exemplary writings, this volume represents an unprecedented effort to recover, reassess, and reassert Brown's enduring significance for contemporary scholars, students, and nonacademic readers. This engaging recuperative project is structured around four distinctive features: new and previously published essays that sum up contemporary approaches to the various genres of Brown's works; interviews with Brown and with his acquaintances and contemporaries; two discographies of source material that innovatively extend the study of Brown's acclaimed poetry; and an updated version of the most comprehensive bibliography of Brown's published writings. "After Winter" aptly demonstrates how Brown, in words from one of his familiar poems, continues to "just get hold of us dataway." -- From publisher's description.
