Book excerpt: What if your social media addiction jeopardized the person you love? Inspired by the explosive events of our polarized political climate, Burner is an all-too plausible contemporary thriller that examines the social and personal consequences of the lost sense of identity, trust, and truth itself that characterizes our technology-obsessed culture. Shane Stoller has just been arrested for domestic terrorism, accused of being the mastermind behind the online profile Burner_911—the anonymous leader of a massive populist movement. Chloe Corbin has just been abducted by Burner_911’s followers in a lawless uprising on the streets of San Francisco, targeted as the socialite daughter of a tech billionaire. What nobody knows is that Shane and Chloe are secretly in love despite coming from opposite worlds. Plagued with regret but unable to communicate with his followers from prison, Shane tries desperately to find a way to save Chloe from the forces he has unleashed. From her own captivity, Chloe becomes more sympathetic to Burner_911’s cause—and transitions from victim to conspirator in an effort to free herself and exonerate Shane. Part tragic love story, part mind-bending psychological thriller, Burner dives headfirst into the modern zeitgeist of politically motivated disinformation, toxic internet subcultures, and our continuing need for belonging, purpose, and love in an age of distorted online personas.

Book excerpt: "As of forty-three minutes ago, I am a seasonaire, whatever that means." When Poppy Connors swaps a life of suits and cappuccinos for a job as a ski rep, she soon finds that resort life on the side of an Austrian alp is more than she bargained for. Adapting to her new diet of Jagermeister, adrenaline and europop, Poppy throws herself into this strange new world - a world in which 200 foot cliffs, midnight shootings and the intrigues of the megalomaniac resort manager soon start to feel normal. When a growing love for backcountry adventures and the irresistible prospect of an illicit affair start to pull her in different directions, Poppy begins to wonder just how she will ever return to the life she left behind... Wickedly funny and utterly authentic, this is a novel for anyone with an intense love for melted cheese, neat spirits and deep snow - ideally all served together. This is the diary of a season.

Book excerpt: With eleven championship rings to his name, Phil Jackson is internationally recognized as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NBA. Known as a defensive disrupter and a master fouler during his early days as a New York Knick and later celebrated as the “Zen Master” for his inspirational tactics as a leader, Jackson has had a long and storied career marked by constant self-reflection and reinvention. This is the man who led Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls to six championships, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers to five; who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame; and who retired in 2011, an official legend—and the most sought-after free-agent coach in history. As befits a legend, Jackson has written several candid, insightful books about his life and career, but now one of America’s most respected sportswriters turns an unvarnished light on Jackson’s strange and remarkable journey, from his sheltered childhood and adolescence in Montana and North Dakota, through his years playing at Madison Square Garden, to his experiences coaching Jordan, Bryant, and more of the greatest players of our time. New York Times-bestselling author Peter Richmond has written a personal, definitive, revealing biography of a veritable sports genius, and an American classic.

DESCRIPTION OF BOOK 1: The Bloodless Assassin As a skinny, dreadlocked girl who grew up on the street making her living as a pickpocket, Rory isn’t exactly a prime candidate for swordmasters to take on as a student. Especially since she can’t pay them. So what’s a girl to do when she dreams of becoming a great sword fighter and adventurer? Blackmail an assassin into taking her as an apprentice, that’s what. Things don’t go according to plan, though. Rory’s new master, Longinus, has more eccentricities than a stray dog has fleas and he’s so frustrating to deal with, she frequently wants to bang her head against a brick wall. They have to put their arguments aside, though, when they both find themselves targeted by a plot aiming to destroy the city. Now not only does Rory have to figure out how to keep herself and Longinus alive, she also has to stop the conspiracy. An impossible task? It’s even harder with Longinus under the delusion that he’s the hero of the story. That would be funny, if it didn't make Rory want to throttle him. Follow along with Rory and Longinus’s unlikely friendship and see how on earth the two misfits get themselves out of trouble. Grab the complete series now. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The NBA according to The Sports Guy—now updated with fresh takes on LeBron, the Celtics, and more! Foreword by Malcom Gladwell • “The work of a true fan . . . it might just represent the next phase of sports commentary.”—The Atlantic Bill Simmons, the wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining basketball addict known to millions as ESPN’s The Sports Guy, has written the definitive book on the past, present, and future of the NBA. From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens—and then closes, once and for all—every major pro basketball debate. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball. Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game’s finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.

Philip Banter is a little too fond of drink, and his marriage isn't what it should be. He's also troubled by a penchant for forgetting. That doesn't mean he's losing his mind. Then Philip finds a manuscript entitled "Confession" in his office. He reads about a surprise dinner party his wife held, of the conversation that took place, and —to his horror—of his own infidelity. But the "confession" turns out to be a prophecy, accurate in almost every detail. Is he the victim of a conspiracy to drive him mad, or did he type the manuscript himself? As the "confession" grows lengthier and more destructive, can he find the willpower to resist its terrifying inevitability?

The people that wallow through these tough times characterize the literature of the time and those we encounter in The Cabals and the Naked Dance, a collection of fifteen stories that capture the day to day lives of people. Infrastructure and underdevelopment is captured in Scrap, corruption in Spare Parts from the Morgue and Prayer Warriors, the craze for babies in marriage in Pilot Light. Nigerians are travelers often in search for education, medical tourism, and their laughable encounters with foreigners is captured in Dreams and Stars. The long-talked-about cabals, who are said to run government big wigs and the countrys resources, is shown here as an attitude of all Nigerians in all walks of life, including children.

A California family dealing with layoffs and the impending repossession of their home has to depend on their faith in God to help them. In an answer to their prayers, the mother, Anne finds that she has inherited some acreage and a farm house from a mysterious Great-Uncle Carl. The family, which includes their three grown children and their families, leave behind their home in Los Angeles and move into this rural one. Their Grandfather, Tony, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, must come live with them. Surprisingly, he informs the family that he had once lived at the house, when it had been a Juvenile work-farm run by Anne's Great Uncle, Dr. Carl. He tells them his long-hid secret of being arrested and sent there. Upon their moving in, unusual things start happening. Family members feel uneasy. Items move by themselves. Shadows are seen moving about. Scratching noises are heard coming from a particular closet. With the help of a local photographer, who also dabbles in a 'Ghost Finders Club' they find evidence of a haunting. A psychic comes to investigate and identifies numerous spirits that are present, including a stronger, evil spirit. By reading hidden journals that were found in the barn, they discover that Great-Uncle Carl was a psychiatrist who ran the work farm for juvenile delinquents in the late 30's and early 40's. The doctor was friends with a powerful Los Angeles County judge. A deal was arranged between them for Dr. Carl to take in teens to treat them for various perceived mental illnesses. The doctor tries to perfect his new methods of orbital lobotomy and electro-shock therapy by using the boys as guinea pigs. With the help of a priest and a psychic the family attempts to remove the spirit of the dead doctor from the house. The culmination of the thrills occurs when a huge storm hits, leaving the occupants at the mercy of what remains in the house with them with nothing but each other.
