Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1889 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER SIX. Fifth Series. FOR ACQUIRING GREAT RANGE OF VOICE. The term "Range of Voice" is well understood to refer to the compass or extent of pitch. This, by some authors, is divided into registers, and called the Upper, Middle and Lower. The Upper register is said to embrace the highest third of the vocal compass of a thoroughly developed voice. The Middle register, embraces the middle third. The Lower register, the lower third. The highest third, sometimes called the head register, indiscriminately, is best represented by the First Vowel Sound, that of E as in the word " Meet." The middle third, sometimes called the throat register, is best represented by the Sixth Vowel Sound, that of Ah, as A in "Father." The lowest third, sometimes called the chest register, is best represented by the Twelfth Vowel Sound, that of O, as in "Roll." These divisions may be mental ones, at least, and will somewhat assist the pupil in practice. The development of pitch is absolutely necessary to the singer, and to the reader or orator it is an exceedingly valuable acquisition. Many singing voices are developed by the exercises of this book, yet nothing of the technique of music is here attempted. A person may be ignorant of music and remain so, yet understand, perform and master all these exercises. For speaking and reading it is not necessary to preserve minute distinctions of pitch or be musically exact. The first exercise under this series will be numbered in continuation of the preceding series. The Nine Degrees of Pitch. Voices limited in range will not be able to make the divisions given in this exercise; but persistent practice will soon show great improvement. Those who understand music may make the nine pitches one whole note apart, if their...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Speak: Exercises in Voice Culture and Articulation Most of the excellent books on Voice Culture which have been published deal with the subject from the viewpoint of the singer. Our aim is to improve the speaking voice; therefore the emphasis is put on that side of the matter. In all the discussions and exercises relating to articulation work, the necessity for the right mental attitude of the speaker toward his audience has been stressed. The obligation to make himself heard, and a real sympathy with the audience, should be felt by everyone, whether he is speaking hi a large hall, a schoolroom or a drawing-room; and the majority of teachers recognize the importance of combining this feeling of responsibility with the mechanical drills. The foundation for the work outlined here is built, mainly, upon the technical courses at Emerson College of Oratory in Boston; and the writers experience in platform reading and teaching in grade work, as well as in teachers college classes, has proved the value of the practice involved. This book has been written in response to the request of many teachers in the public schools for a definite outline of work to develop the correct use of the voice and distinct articulation. It shows the logical order of the drills used every day in the Public Speaking classroom at the Rhode Island College of Education. Book excerpt: Rob Paulsen is one of Hollywood’s busiest, most talented, and most passionate performers. If you don’t know him by name, you will know him by the many characters he has brought to life: Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, Yakko from Animaniacs, the tough but loveable Raphael from the original animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more. So you can imagine how terrifying it must have been when Rob was diagnosed with throat cancer, putting his entire livelihood in jeopardy and threatening to rob the world of all his loveable characters that filled our youths and adulthoods with humor and delight. Voice Lessons tells the heartwarming and life-affirming story of Rob’s experience with an aggressive cancer treatment and recovery regimen, which luckily led to a full recovery. Rob quickly returned to doing what he loves most, but with a much deeper appreciation of what he came so close to losing. His new lease on life inspired him to rededicate himself to his fans, particularly the new friends he made along the way: hundreds of sick children and their families. Rob said it best himself: “I can not only continue to make a living, but make a difference, and I can’t wait to use that on the biggest scale that I can.”

Book excerpt: Lessons on diction, detail, figurative language, imagery, syntax, and tone help middle and early high school students understand the concept of voice in what they read and develop a strong, personal voice in their own writing. Each voice lesson takes only 10-20 minutes to complete and includes a quotation selected from a wide range of literature, two discussion questions, and an exercise that encourages students to practice what they have learned about the elements of voice. Discovering Voice also offers a collection of quotations students can use to create their own voice lessons. Discussion suggestions for each voice lesson and additional activities for teaching voice further promote critical analysis. Each of the seven packs on the elements of voice--diction, detail, figurative language 1 (metaphors, similes, and personification), figurative language 2 (hyperboles, symbols, and irony), imagery, syntax, and tone--include an introduction, lessons with discussion questions and an exercise, "write-your-own" voice lessons, a list of additional activities for teaching voice, and discussion suggestions.
