This book was released on 2015-11-06T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Making of the Magdalen by : Katherine Ludwig Jansen
Download or read book The Making of the Magdalen written by Katherine Ludwig Jansen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2001-07-22 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Best known during the Middle Ages as the prostitute who became a faithful follower of Christ, Mary Magdalen was the most beloved female saint after the Virgin Mary. Why the Magdalen became so popular, what meanings she conveyed, and how her story evolved over the centuries are the focus of this compelling exploration of late medieval religious culture." "Through the lens of medieval preaching, as well as the responses of those who heard the sermons preached, Katherine Jansen brings to light previously unpublished sermons to show how and why the mendicant friars transformed Mary Magdalen, a shadowy gospel figure, into an emblem of action and contemplation, a symbol of vanity and lust, a model of perfect penance, and the embodiment of hope and salvation. Jansen also draws on a variety of historical sources - from saints' lives to patronage patterns - to examine the laity's reception of the saint. She reveals that the laity's devotion to Mary Magdalen departed in significant ways from the friars' image of the saint, signaling a major development in popular religious practice and personal piety." "The making of the Magdalen will appeal to readers of medieval history and religion, to those with an interest in the study of women, sexuality, and gender, and to those who are interested in saints throughout the ages."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Sensual and Sensory Experiences in the Middle Ages by : Carme Muntaner Alsina
Download or read book Sensual and Sensory Experiences in the Middle Ages written by Carme Muntaner Alsina and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where was the line between pleasure and irritation in the sensory overload caused by the sounds, colours, and smells of a medieval market? How could pain and suffering be relieved by hoping for, and desiring to experience, an intimate, almost familiar, contact with Christ? This volume shows the different aspects of sensory experiences that medieval people conveyed through documents, literary accounts, and religious practices. The unifying theme here is how pleasure, pain, desire, and fear appear in different—sometimes conflicting—combinations and settings: from the private space of the monastic cell to the shared hustle of the market. The geographic focus of this volume is Mediterranean Europe, although it also touches on other Western contexts. The combination of different points of view here provides an original contribution to the study of sensory experiences in the Middle Ages.

Download or read book A Fiery Heart written by Felice Accrocca and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we really know about Saint Francis of Assisi? Much has been written about this medieval saint from Umbria in present-day central Italy. Yet the image we have of him does not always correspond to reality, as his fame is often linked to legends and texts that have no historical basis. Francis was an exceptional man, as his own contemporaries testified. Too often, though, this emphasis has obscured his humanity. Francis immersed himself with all his heart in daily life because he was certain that the Son of God had become man to share our full human experience. This was the central fact of Francis' life: He burned with love of God. This love was a boundless love that flowed from his fiery heart. He admitted that he could not explain such an abundance of love, except through the words of Jesus, who "came to cast fire upon the earth" (Lk 12:49). The perennial relevance of Francis, even in our increasingly secular world, lies in the perennial newness of the Gospel. The Gospel always communicates Jesus Christ, who is beyond, always ahead of us, and never outdated. Francis' radical evangelism consistently reminds us of the absolute nature of the Gospel.

Book excerpt: The present volume collects seventeen case studies that characterize the various kinds of translationes within European culture over the last two millennia. Intellectual identities establish themselves by means of a continuous translation and rethinking of previous meanings—a sequence of translations and transformations in the transmission of knowledge from one intellectual context to another. This book provides a view on a wide range of texts from ancient Greece to Rome, from the Medieval world to the Renaissance, indicating how the process of translatio studiorum evolves as a continuous transposition of texts, of the ways in which they are rewritten, their translations, interpretations and metamorphosis, all of which are crucial to a full understanding of intellectual history.

Book Synopsis Pazze di Lui - Mad for Him: Hagiographic Stereotypes, Mental Disturbances and Anthropological Implications of Female Saintliness in Italy and Abroad from the 13th to the 20th Century by : Mattia Zangari
Download or read book Pazze di Lui - Mad for Him: Hagiographic Stereotypes, Mental Disturbances and Anthropological Implications of Female Saintliness in Italy and Abroad from the 13th to the 20th Century written by Mattia Zangari and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to investigate the delicate relationship between female sanctity and madness, in a time-frame extending from medieval until contemporary times. Constellated by visions, ecstatic raptures, morbid rituals, stigmata and obsessions, the complex phenomenology of female mysticism appears in fact to be articulated and polymorphous, traversed by 'representations' that it seems possible to link to the wide spectrum of mental disorders, as well to the hagiographic stereotypes and anthropological implications. Male and female scholars from different disciplines (from history to philology, from anthropology to art history, from theology to literary criticism, from psychiatry to psychoanalysis) try to outline a thematic and problematic itinerary, intended to examine, step by step, potential pathological aspects and contexts of reference for the purpose of attempting to reconstruct the complex evolutionary trajectory of female mystical language.
