Book excerpt: The Vietnamese of Paris: Integration without Assimilation and Conservation of Cultural identity. France, known as a country of exile, has maintained its reputation in welcoming many political refugies from South-East Asia following the events in 1975. Their arrival has diversified the composition of the Vietnamese community in France, once made-up mostly of intellectuals. However, the Vietnamese seem to have integrated into the French society without many of the problems which confront other foreign populations. Factors which help the Vietnamese adapt to French culture include a long colonial relationship which familiarizes one culture with the other. The image of the Asians, calm and respectful, also contributes to their acceptance in France. Keywords: France; Vietnam. (EG).
