Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive colour atlas provides a state-of-the-art view of Single Photon Emission Computerised Tomography (SPECT) in relation to its application in the fields of nuclear medicine and psychiatry. The broad range of topics covered by experts in the fields of nuclear medicine, neurology and psychiatry from all over the world, reflects the most recent evolution in functional neuroimaging with clinical neuropsychiatric sciences. The book is organised with respect to clinical indication, which implies that whenever possible methodological problems related to clinical indication are categorised under the relevant topic. It is designed to stimulate discussion of some issues of paramount importance for the present and future development of this interdisciplinary modality for the study of patients with diseases of the central nervous system. This textbook is an important tool to all nuclear physicians, neurologists and psychiatrists and will serve as a guide towards the optimal application of SPECT in diagnosis, study of pathophysiology and therapeutic follow-up in neuropsychiatric illnesses.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the World Psychiatric Association is to coordinate the activities of its Member Societies on a world-wide scale and to advance enquiry into the etiology, pathology, and treatment of mental illness. To further this purpose, the Association organizes mono- or multithematic Regional Symposia in different parts of the world twice a year, and World Congresses dealing with all individual fields of psychiatry once every five or six years. Between these meetings the continuation of the Association's scientific work is assured through the activities of its specialty sections, each covering an important field of psychiatry. The programs of the World Congresses reflect on the one hand the intention to present the coordinating functions of the Association and on the other to open a broad platform for a free exchange of views. Thus, the VII World Congress of Psychiatry, held in Vienna from July 11 to 16, 1983, was composed of two types of scientific events - those structured by the Association and those left to the initiative of the participants. The first type comprised Plenary Sessions, planned by the Scientific Program Committee, and Section Symposia, organized by the WPA sections; the second embraced Free Symposia, free papers, video sessions, and poster presentations prepared by the participants. Altogether, 10 Plenary Sessions, 52 Section Symposia, and 105 Free Symposia took place, and 78 free papers and poster sessions and 10 video sessions were held.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of the contributions presented at a conference held from August 30 to September 1, 1984 at the Universite Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France. This meeting was organized under the joint auspices of the European Brain and Behaviour Society (EBBS) and the Societe Fran~aise pour 1 'Etude du Comportement Animal (SFECA). The objective of this meeting was to bring together an international group of participants to evaluate and to report on recent research in three broad and overlapping fields within the general theme of the relationships between brain plasticity and learning and memory. These three fields are "developmental plasticity" "adaptive plasticity" and "restorative plas tici ty." Al though the boundaries between these fie Ids are a rna t ter of debate (see Introduction), they have been retained as the major sections of this volume, the arrangement of which roughly parallels that of the meeting. We believe and very much hope that the contents of this volume convey an internal consistency despite the diversity of the material presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the apoE4 allele is a risk factor or susceptibility gene in late-onset familial and sporadic AD, the mechanism of disease expression may involve metabolic effects that are isoform specific. Isoform-specific interactions of apoE therefore become critical in the mechanism of AD pathogenesis. Detailed characterization of the binding of the apoE isoforms with proteins and peptides relevant to the pathology of the disease may be critical in understanding disease pathogenesis. These critical isoform-specific interactions of apoE may involve interactions with proteins and pep tides in the defining neuropathologic lesions of the disease, the neurofibrillary tangle and senile plaque. Other possible critical isoform-specific interactions include the mechanism of internalization, intracellular trafficking, and subsequent metabolism. In addition, differential post-translational modifications of apoE isoforms may determine differences in metabolism contributing to the pathogenesis of the disease. Oxidation of apoE may confer several isoform-specific, biochemically distinct properties. Since {3A peptide binds apoE in the lipoprotein binding domain of the protein and not in the receptor-binding domain, apoE could target bound {3A4 peptide to neurons via the LRP receptor. Internalization of the apoEI {3A peptide complex into the cell, by the same route as the apoE-containing lipoproteins, would result in incorporation into primary lysosomes and pH dependent dissociation. The demonstration of apoE in the cytoplasm of neurons, with isoform-specific interactions of apoE with the microtubule-binding protein tau demonstrated in vitro, suggest additional, testable hypotheses of disease pathogenesis.

Book excerpt: Although this monograph "Dependency o r interdependency in old age" is not the first publication o f the European Social Sciences Research C- mittee (ESSRC) o f the International Association o f Gerontology, I a m happy, as former chairman o f the Committee (1964-1975), to introduce this book to the readers, together with the present chairman. So far the activities o f the Committee have consisted o f co-operating in organizing the scientific programme o f the tri-annual congresses o f the International Association o f Gerontology (lAG), and in organizing sm- ler o r bigger symposia and colloquia for social gerontologists. Sometimes these meetings were mainly organized for European researchers only, sometimes several concurrent colloquia took place in which Americans and o t h e r non-Europeans participated. T h e Committee, the oldest o f the lAG, was established at a scientific meeting in 1954 at Sheffield (U. K. ) A f t e r that year colloquia were held in 1956 near Copenhagen 1 (Denmark), in 1957 at M e r a n o2 (Italy), in 1959 at Assisi (Italy), in 1960 a t Berkeley (Cal.

Book excerpt: In this book Adam Piette establishes fascinating new links between sound effects and the representation of memory in literary texts. He sets out a workable taxonomy of sound-repetitions in prose and formulates, through a theory of alerting-devices, the ways in which the reader's attention is drawn to the acoustic surface of the text. Piette scrutinizes Mallarm 's prose-poetry, Proust's musical syntax, Joyce's memory-rhymes (from the Portrait of the Artist through Ulysses to Finnegans Wake), and Beckett's prose and drama, demonstrating that sound effects act as intricate reminders of memory-traces in the text. Despite how widely the four writers diverge in their representations of memory, Piette shows that the use of this memory-rhyme technique is common to them all.
