Book excerpt: Traditional transport planning has generated transport systems that propagate an unfair distribution of accessibility and have environmental and safety issues. This book highlights the importance of social and political aspects of transport policy and provides a methodology to support this approach. It emphasizes the importance of co-ordinating urban, transport and traffic planning, and addresses the major challenge of modifying the building and use of roads. The author makes suggestions for innovative and radical new measures towards an equitable and sustainable urban environment.

Book excerpt: Conditions for travel have changed and are still changing the world a world experiencing what John Urry calls the mobility turn . Since World War Two we have been moving faster and going further a fact that has profoundly changed our way of experiencing both the world and ourselves. The explosion of low-cost travel options has similarly had an important impact on the economy, adding to the globalization of markets and transformations in modes of production. It is no longer possible to think of nation-states as autonomous vis-a-vis one another, nor of cities or regions as homogenous spaces delimited by clear-cut borders. Societies, like Western cities, are redefining themselves through mobility. What does this mean for the city for its governability and governance? In this book Vincent Kaufmann assesses the urban implications of the mobility turn. He explores the modern urban phenomenon from the point of view of the mobility capacities of its players their motility. He asks that the reader consider the idea of a city or region as the product or an arrangement of a specific set of motilities. Re-Thinking the City seeks to identify how the motility of individuals, goods, and information acts as an organizing principle or rather, the organizing principle of contemporary urban change, and then aims to examine the consequences for urban governance by exploring the channels through which individual and collective motility can be regulated.

Book excerpt: The subjects of transport and information systems have long been closely linked because they are both complements and substitutes for each other and thus offer potential for more efficient and productive traffic demand management. This important new collection examines the substitution and complementarity hypotheses as well as the impact of new information technology on transport and the increasing adoption of information technology in transportation systems. The volume is organised into five sections. Part I offers a history and overview of the subject, while part II examines the welfare implications of information provision for traffic demand management. Part III discusses the network analysis of intelligent transportation systems and part IV investigates the spatial impacts of information technology and telecommuting. Finally part V looks in detail at case studies. This fascinating new collection will be an essential source of reference to scholars, practitioners and students interested in the subjects of transport and information systems.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the hypothesis that regional transportation assistance to developing countries, more specifically to landlocked and transit countries jointly, plays an important role in the development process of the Third World. The paper first discusses the evolution of the transport sector in developing countries, then analyzes their problems and transportation needs. It then examines the Canadian response to Third World transportation problems with particular attention to the characteristics, evolution, magnitude and distribution of transportation aid. Finally, it evaluates Canadian assistance, particularly in the context of recent policy changes.

Book excerpt: The Roots of Liberty is a critical collection of essays on the origin and nature of the often elusive idea of the nature of liberty. Throughout this book, the original and thought-provoking views from scholars J C Holt, Christopher W Brooks, Paul Christianson, and John Phillip Reid offer insights into the development of English ideas of liberty and the relationship those ideas hold to modern conceptions of rule of law. Ellis Sandoz's introduction details Fortescue's vision of the constitution and places each of the essays in historiographical context. Corrine C. Weston's spirited epilogue evaluates the essays' arguments.
