L'analyse des contributions majeures à ce nouveau courant révèle qu'il répond aux critiques fondamentales dont la théorie traditionnelle a été l'objet, notamment parce qu'il rompt avec le traitement symétrique des facteurs en introduisant la possibilité de conflits entre le capital et le travail et considère la relation d'emploi comme l'essence de l'entreprise. Mais la théorie moderne prétend démontrer que la firme capitaliste (c'est-à-dire le rapport salarial) est la meilleure solution institutionnelle pour répondre aux problèmes que posent les rapports conflictuels entre employeurs et employés et, de ce fait, néglige le contrôle du travail durant l'exécution du contrat salarial. Pourtant l'expérience prouve, comme le montre la seconde partie, qu'il s'agit d'un problème crucial de gestion, qui, dans l'histoire de la firme capitaliste, a nécessité l'élaboration de stratégies spécifiques d'importance majeure. Deux exemples de stratégies de ce type sont étudiés : les politiques paternalistes, tout particulièrement le développement de l'instruction primaire au 19ème siècle, et la sous-traitance interne, considérées comme des stratégies de contrôle de la main-d'œuvre.

Building on the literature in economics and geography, this book demonstrates that product innovation clusters spatially in regions which provide concentrations of the knowledge needed for the commercialization process. The book develops a conceptual model which links the location of new product innovations to the sources of these knowledge inputs. The geographic concentration of this knowledge fonns a technological infrastructure which promotes infonnation transfers, and lowers the risks and the costs of engaging in innovative activity. Empirical estimation confinns that the location of product innovation is related to the underlying technological infrastructure, and that the location of the knowledge inputs are mutually reinforcing in defining a region's competitive advantage. The book concludes by considering the policy implications of these fmdings for both private finns and state governments.
