Située dans le nord de la ville sur les terrains vagues libérés des anciennes fortifications (zone entre l'avenue de Waterloo et le square Hiernaux), cette exposition présente le Pays de Charleroi sous différentes facettes de son savoir-faire : la culture, le commerce, le travail, la pédagogie, la formation,... y sont présentés dans différents pavillons et palais. Des enseignes comme Delhaize, ou encore comme la manufacture de tabac Tirou-Diricq,... prennent part à cette manifestation. Le site de l'actuel parc de la Garenne est également utilisé, comme aire de loisirs, les deux lieux étant reliés par un pont de bois surplombant la rue du Mambourg et le bas de la rue du Fort. La construction de ce pont fit d'ailleurs démolir le toit d'une maison, vite surnommée la maison sans tête par les habitants du quartier. Intérieur d'un bâtiment de l'Université du Travail, en plein coeur de l'Exposition Tous les bâtiments et les travaux ont été réalisés en seulement une année - la pose de la première pierre eut lieu le 20 juin 1910. Mener à bien tous les travaux dans des délais courts fut un record pour l'époque, au vu des tâches importantes à réaliser : terrassement, nivelage, construction, décoration,... Le Luna Gardens présentait différentes attractions pour les visiteurs : railway-cable, roue joyeuse,... ainsi que des fanfares, concerts, divers jeux, fêtes cinématographiques, expositions thématiques,... Un véritable village japonais est présent, avec ses pagodes, jardins et pièces d'eau, et quelques autochtones... Le 10 juillet 1911, le roi Albert et la reine Elisabeth se rendent à l'Exposition. Cette exposition fut un succès total, valorisant le patrimoine et le savoir faire carolorégien et wallon à travers le monde entier. A la fin novembre, date de cloture de l'événement, plusieurs centaines de milliers de visiteurs avaient pris part à l'événement. Aujourd'hui, les traces de cette Exposition ne sont plus très nombreuses... Les deux bâtiments de l'Université du Travail situés de part et d'autre du Boulevard Solvay étaient destinés à devenir les premiers locaux de l'UT, après avoir été utilisés dans un premier temps pour l'Exposition. Un pavillon électrique, situé au croisement du Boulevard Joseph II et du Boulevard Zoé Drion, persiste également.

Book excerpt: In The Path Not Taken, Jeff Horn argues that—contrary to standard, Anglocentric accounts—French industrialization was not a failed imitation of the laissez-faire British model but the product of a distinctive industrial policy that led, over the long term, to prosperity comparable to Britain's. Despite the upheavals of the Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, France developed and maintained its own industrial strengths. France was then able to take full advantage of the new technologies and industries that emerged in the "second industrial revolution," and by the end of the nineteenth century some of France's industries were outperforming Britain's handily. The Path Not Taken shows that the foundations of this success were laid during the first industrial revolution. Horn posits that the French state's early attempt to emulate Britain's style of industrial development foundered because of revolutionary politics. The "threat from below" made it impossible for the state or entrepreneurs to control and exploit laborers in the British manner. The French used different means to manage labor unruliness and encourage innovation and entrepreneurialism. Technology is at the heart of Horn's analysis, and he shows that France, unlike England, often preferred still-profitable older methods of production in order to maintain employment and forestall revolution. Horn examines the institutional framework established by Napoleon's most important Minister of the Interior, Jean-Antoine Chaptal. He focuses on textiles, chemicals, and steel, looks at how these new institutions created a new industrial environment. Horn's illuminating comparison of French and British industrialization should stir debate among historians, economists, and political scientists.
