Book Synopsis The French Historical Revolution by : Peter Burke
Download or read book The French Historical Revolution written by Peter Burke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical history of the movement associated with the journal Annales, from its foundation in 1929 to the present. This movement has been the single most important force in the development of what is sometimes called ‘the new history’. Renowned cultural historian, Peter Burke, distinguishes between four main generations in the development of the Annales School. The first generation included Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch, who fought against the old historical establishment and founded the journal Annales to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. The second generation was dominated by Fernand Braudel, whose magnificent work on the Mediterranean has become a modern classic. The third generation, deeply associated with the ‘cultural turn’ in historical scholarship, includes recently well-known historians such as Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Jacques Le Goff and Georges Duby. This new edition brings us right up to the present, and contemplates the work of a fourth generation, including practitioners such as Roger Chartier, Serge Gruzinski and Jacques Revel. This new generation continued much of the cultural focus of the previous Annales historians, while diversifying further, and becoming increasingly ‘reflexive’, a move that owes much to the sociocultural theories of Michel Foucault, Michel de Certeau and Pierre Bourdieu. Wide-ranging yet concise, this new edition of a classic work of analysis of one of the most important historical movements of the twentieth century will be welcomed by students of history and other social sciences and by the interested general reader.

Book Synopsis Historicizing the French Revolution by : Antonino De Francesco
Download or read book Historicizing the French Revolution written by Antonino De Francesco and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical examination of over 300 historical works about the French Revolution, published in Europe (in particular in France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Russia) as well as in the United States between 1789 and 1989. It also goes on to examine recent trends in French Revolution historiography and consider where histories of this landmark event may go in the future. By emphasizing the elements which have been valued or hidden, exalted or silenced, Historicizing the French Revolution shows how reflections on 1789 are always fundamentally tied to the times in which they are formulated. Antonino De Francesco looks at the ways in which these historical accounts can be seen to support and, at times, contrast with the formation of political modernity – both in national and international contexts – as it has taken shape in the hundreds of years that have followed this key moment in world history.
Book Synopsis Children of the Revolution by : Robert Gildea
Download or read book Children of the Revolution written by Robert Gildea and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century France was one of the world's great cultural beacons, renowned for its dazzling literature, philosophy, art, poetry and technology. Yet this was also a tumultuous century of political anarchy and bloodshed, where each generation of the French Revolution's 'children' would experience their own wars, revolutions and terrors. From soldiers to priests, from peasants to Communards, from feminists to literary figures such as Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac, Robert Gildea's brilliant new history explores every aspect of these rapidly changing times, and the people who lived through them.
Book Synopsis Revolution and (Post) War, 1917-1922 by : Clara Isabel Serrano
Download or read book Revolution and (Post) War, 1917-1922 written by Clara Isabel Serrano and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Russian Revolution of 1917, the legacy of the First World War, and Mussolini and Italian fascism – offering an important overview of the major themes of the early 20th century. Using a methodical approach and employing a wide range of sources, the nine chapters provide a re-analysis and synthesis of these three major subjects and looks at how the world was reshaped during the period of 1917–1922. This volume also discusses lesser-known subjects in Anglo-Saxon historiography: the effects of the Russian Revolution in Spain and in the Islamic world, as well as the consequences of the Portuguese participation in the First World War in Africa, and the German memory of that conflict. By linking these themes, this book sheds a light on how since the early 21st century we have witnessed a rise of populism and extremism. Dealing with one of the most paradigmatic periods of Contemporary History, this book is essential for scholars and students of History, International Relations, Postcolonial Studies, and African Studies programs, as well as librarians and diplomats, and for advanced training institutions, peacebuilding organizations, international NGOs, and the wider public.
