This book was released on 1999-11-23 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 6 volumes -- the result of a 10 year collaboration between the authors, both distinguished international figures -- compile the mathematical knowledge required by researchers in mechanics, physics, engineering, chemistry and other branches of application of mathematics for the theoretical and numerical resolution of physical models on computers. The advent of high-speed computers has made it possible to calculate values from models accurately and rapidly. Researchers and engineers thus have a crucial means of using numerical results to modify and adapt arguments and experiments along the way.

Book excerpt: This book contains the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Boundary Elements held at the University of Stuttgart, Germany from August 31st to September 4th, 1987, which was organized in co-operation with the Computational Mechanics Institute and GAMM (Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics). This Conference, as the previous ones, aimed to review the latest developments in technique and theory and point out new advanced future trends. The emphasis of the meeting was on the engineering advances versus mathematical formulations, in an effort to consolidate the basis of many new applications. Recently engineers have proposed different techniques to solve non-linear and time dependent problems and many of these formulations needed a better mathematical understanding. Furthermore, new approximate formulations have been proposed for boundary elements which appeared to work in engineering practice, but did not have a proper theoretical background. The Conference also discussed the engineering applications of the method and concentrated on a link between BEM practitioners, industrial users and researchers working on the latest development of the method. The editors would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Ms. Liz Newman and Mr. H. Schmitz for their unstinting work in the preparation of the Conference.

Book excerpt: In the theory of partial differential equations, the study of elliptic equations occupies a preeminent position, both because of the importance which it assumes for various questions in mathematical physics, and because of the completeness of the results obtained up to the present time. In spite of this, even in the more classical treatises on analysis the theory of elliptic equations has been considered and illustrated only from particular points of view, while the only expositions of the whole theory, the extremely valuable ones by LICHTENSTEIN and AscoLI, have the charac ter of encyclopedia articles and date back to many years ago. Consequently it seemed to me that it would be of some interest to try to give an up-to-date picture of the present state of research in this area in a monograph which, without attaining the dimensions of a treatise, would nevertheless be sufficiently extensive to allow the expo sition, in some cases in summary form, of the various techniques used in the study of these equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book contains an enormous amount of information — mathematical, bibliographical and historical — interwoven with some outstanding heuristic discussions." — Mathematical Reviews. In this massive graduate-level study, Emeritus Professor Edwards (Australian National University, Canberra) presents a balanced account of both the abstract theory and the applications of linear functional analysis. Written for readers with a basic knowledge of set theory, general topology, and vector spaces, the book includes an abundance of carefully chosen illustrative examples and excellent exercises at the end of each chapter. Beginning with a chapter of preliminaries on set theory and topology, Dr. Edwards then presents detailed, in-depth discussions of vector spaces and topological vector spaces, the Hahn-Banach theorem (including applications to potential theory, approximation theory, game theory, and other fields) and fixed-point theorems. Subsequent chapters focus on topological duals of certain spaces: radon measures, distribution and linear partial differential equations, open mapping and closed graph theorems, boundedness principles, duality theory, the theory of compact operators and the Krein-Milman theorem and its applications to commutative harmonic analysis. Clearly and concisely written, Dr. Edwards's book offers rewarding reading to mathematicians and physicists with an interest in the important field of functional analysis. Because of the broad scope of its coverage, this volume will be especially valuable to the reader with a basic knowledge of functional analysis who wishes to learn about parts of the subject other than his own specialties. A comprehensive 32-page bibliography supplies a rich source of references to the basic literature.

Book excerpt: This self-contained text is directed to graduate students with some previous exposure to classical partial differential equations. Readers can attain a quick familiarity with various abstract points of view in partial differential equations, allowing them to read the literature and begin thesis work. The author's detailed presentation requires no prior knowledge of many mathematical subjects and illustrates the methods' applicability to the solution of interesting differential problems. The treatment emphasizes existence-uniqueness theory as a topic in functional analysis and examines abstract evolution equations and ordinary differential equations with operator coefficients. A concluding chapter on global analysis develops some basic geometrical ideas essential to index theory, overdetermined systems, and related areas. In addition to exercises for self-study, the text features a thorough bibliography. Appendixes cover topology and fixed-point theory in addition to Banach algebras, analytic functional calculus, fractional powers of operators, and interpolation theory.

This book, as the conference, is organized into three sections. Section A describes the modern theory of efficient cubature formulas; embedding theorems; and problems of spectral analysis. Section B considers the theoretical questions of partial differential equations, with emphasis on hyperbolic equations and systems, formulations, and methods for nonclassical problems of mathematical physics. Section C addresses the various problems of numerical mathematics, with focus on the optimum and asymptotically optimum algorithms for solving the problems of numerical mathematics.

Book excerpt: The Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications V is the summary of invited papers and the abstracts of the poster papers in the fifth conference on The Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications, MAFELAP 1984, held at Brunei University in May 1984. Said symposium discussedfield of finite elements, including its techniques, theory, application, and implementation . The coverage of the book includes a wide range of mathematical topics under finite elements, including its method, calculations, analysis, and applications. The book also encompasses topics of computer-generated geometric design interface; modeling in an integrated computer design; and determination of dimensional field lines. Acidized channels in chalk formations, elastodynamics, stress analysis, and infinite elements are also discussed. The book also looks at isoparametric and hierarchical element procedures and Petrov-Galerkin methods. The text is recommended for mathematicians, engineers, and those in the field of information technology who would like to know more about finite elements and its applications in their respective fields.
