Peut-on espérer autre chose que d’avoir, chacun, les mêmes « chances », les mêmes possibilités de mobilité sociale ? Pouvons-nous désirer autre chose que la garantie que nous pourrons – qui que nous soyons – choisir véritablement notre vie. Profondément ancrée dans notre culture sociale et politique, l’égalité des chances s’impose comme égalité souveraine. Pourtant, que d’injustices commises en son nom, que d’échecs aussi ! Pour qu’une société soit juste, suffit-il que les individus aient la possibilité de s’y affronter à armes égales ? Contrairement à bien des idées reçues, la doctrine de l’égalité des chances, telle qu’elle est aujourd’hui pensée, ne permettra jamais que soit résolu le pressant problème de la décohésion sociale. C’est donc une autre égalité des chances qu’il faut envisager, une égalité des chances qui repose enfin sur la possibilité d’un égalitarisme soutenable. Cette problématique est explorée dans cet ouvrage tant sur le registre politique (de l’Etat Bismarkien au New deal ou au sarkozysme) que sur le registre philosophique (de Tocqueville à Rawls). Un livre promis à devenir un « classique » de la sociologie politique. Alors que les inégalités de classes structuraient les conflits, les mouvements sociaux, la vie politique, les identités collectives et les principes de la solidarité, aujourd’hui, les inégalités se multiplient et s’individualisent. Nous sommes tous inégaux et singuliers. Comme le constate François Dubet, les inégalités nous séparent plus qu’elles nous rassemblent. Nous nous sentons privilégiés, défavorisés, discriminés ou méprisés « en tant que » : en tant que salarié, en tant que précaire, en tant que jeune, vieux, femme, immigré, etc. Ces inégalités multiples sont d’autant plus douloureuses que l’adhésion à l’idéal de l’égalité des chances, nous conduit à être responsables de ce qui nous arrive et à penser que les autres « méritent » les inégalités qu’ils subissent. C'est à l’analyse de ce nouveau régime des inégalités qu’est consacré cet essai, ainsi qu’à la façon dont il met la politique au défi. Car l’enjeu est crucial, en particulier pour la gauche : comment le camp qui fédérait et représentait des inégalités de classes relativement homogènes, peut-il parvenir à représenter ces inégalités singulières ? Comment reconstruire de la solidarité ? Sans prétendre répondre à la question, François Dubet démontre que seul un travail sociologique peut permettre de comprendre la société actuelle et ses défis. François Dubet est professeur de sociologie émérite à l’université de Bordeaux II, directeur d’études à l’EHESS. It is based on qualitative in-depth research into several hundred biographies and professional trajectories of young people with an immigrant working-class background, who made it into high-prestige professions. The biographies were collected and analysed by a consortium of researchers in nine European countries from Norway to Spain. Through these analyses, the book explores the possibilities of cross-country comparisons of how trajectories are related to different institutional arrangements at the national and local level. The analysis uncovers the interaction effects between structural/institutional settings and specific individual achievements and family backgrounds, and how these individuals responsed to and navigated successfully through sector-specific pathways into high-skilled professions, such as becoming a lawyer or a teacher. By this, it also explains why these trajectories of professional success and upward mobility have been so exceptional in the second generation of working-class origins, and it tells us a lot also about exclusion mechanisms that marked the school and professional careers of children of immigrants who went to school in the 1970s to 2000s in Europe – and still do.
