Mais cette guerre demeure avant tout une guerre civile, dans laquelle s'affrontent deux Espagne : l'une, rurale, nationaliste et catholique; l'autre, citadine, républicaine et laïque jusqu'à l'anticléricalisme. Comme toutes les guerres civiles, elle est sanglante et sans merci, avec son cortège d'horreurs dans les deux camps. Durant trois ans, l'Espagne semble un champ clos où se joue avant l'heure le drame de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, avant que le pays ne s'enfonce pour des décennies dans la dictature franquiste.
