Book Synopsis L'armée de Terre française du 10 mai 1940 by : Éric Denis
Download or read book L'armée de Terre française du 10 mai 1940 written by Éric Denis and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Railway Guns of World War II by : Steven J. Zaloga
Download or read book Railway Guns of World War II written by Steven J. Zaloga and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II marked the zenith of railway gun development. Although many of the railway guns deployed at the start of the conflict were of World War I vintage, Germany's ambitious development programme saw the introduction of a number of new classes, including the world's largest, the 80cm-calibre Schwerer Gustav and Schwerer Dora guns, which weighed in at 1,350 tons and fired a huge 7-ton shell. This book provides an overview of the types of railway guns in service during World War II, with a special focus on the German railway artillery used in France, Italy and on the Eastern Front, and analyzes why railway guns largely disappeared from use following the end of the war.
Download or read book The Bofors Gun written by Terry Gander and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 40mm Bofors Gun, first produced in the 1930s, has become one of the most famous artillery pieces of all time. It shows no sign of fading from the defence scene even though, in the second decade of the twenty-first century, it performs in many roles that were not contemplated by its original designers. It has also proved to be so versatile that it is now allied to electronic and other technological marvels that were mere pipe dreams only a few years ago. When the Bofors entered the international defence market, its primary quarry, the military aircraft, was still a slow and fragile machine that could be terminally damaged by a single hit from a 40mm projectile. Terry Gander describes this early period in the gun's development and he shows how, despite recent?increases in target speed and other performance parameters, it can still inflict a one-hit kill on almost any aircraft, helicopter?or guided missile. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the story is that the fundamentals of today's Bofors guns remain virtually unchanged from the very first examples to come off the Karlskoga production line in Sweden. In all its forms, the Bofors continues to be a sound, reliable and lethal piece of military hardware that has given good service to gunners all over the world.?Terry Gander's comprehensive account of the history of this remarkable weapon over the course of almost eighty years is fascinating?reading and an invaluable work of reference for military historians and artillery specialists alike. It is the definitive work in the field.??As featured on BBC Radio Guernsey.
Book Synopsis On Artillery by : Bruce I. Gudmundsson
Download or read book On Artillery written by Bruce I. Gudmundsson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1993-09-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gudmundsson tells the story of field artillery in the 20th century and its impact on the major conflicts of our time. Its purpose is to provide the reader--whether artilleryman or not--with hitherto unavailable insights on the role that artillery plays in the larger battle and how that has helped shape the world that we live in today. Unique aspects of the book include the treatment of technical issues in non-technical language, the extensive use of German and French sources generally unavailable to the English-speaking reader, the shattering of some long-cherished myths, and the discussion of issues that are often papered over in the literature of field artillery--losses from friendly fire, the frequent impotence of counter-battery fire, and the French origins of current American doctrine. The bulk of the literature on field artillery can be fairly described as gunner propaganda. Gudmundsson, with his emphasis on the way artillery interacts with other arms and the dynamics of the battle as a whole, takes a more balanced and a more critical view, dealing with the failures as well as the achievements of field artillery. This study provides a thorough overview of field artillery in non-technical language that will be of interest to military professionals, military historians, and wargamers.

Book Synopsis Flight to Arras by : Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Download or read book Flight to Arras written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and published by HMH. This book was released on 1969-10-22 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World War II aviator and author of The Little Prince tells his true story of flying a reconnaissance plane during the Battle of France in 1940. When the Germans first invaded France in May of 1940, the French Air Force had a mere fifty reconnaissance crews, twenty-three of which served in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Group II/33. After only a few days, seventeen of the crews in Saint-Exupéry’s unit had already perished. Flight to Arras is the harrowing story of a single mission over the French town of Arras, an endeavor Saint-Exupéry realized the futility of even as he witnessed it unfolding. Filled with tension, emotion, philosophy, and historical detail, and penned by a master storyteller, this extraordinary memoir serves as a record of a little-known chapter of the Second World War, and an unforgettable portrait of the brave souls who fought despite desperate odds.
