Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Mary by : Chris Maunder
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Mary written by Chris Maunder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-07 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Mary offers an interdisciplinary guide to Marian Studies, including chapters on textual, literary, and media analysis; theology; Church history; art history; studies on devotion in a variety of forms; cultural history; folk tradition; gender analysis; apparitions and apocalypticism. Featuring contributions from a distinguished group of international scholars, the Handbook looks at both Eastern and Western perspectives and attempts to correct imbalance in previous books on Mary towards the West. The volume also considers Mary in Islam and pilgrimages shared by Christian, Muslim, and Jewish adherents. While Mary can be a source of theological disagreement, this authoritative collection shows Mary's rich potential for inter-faith and inter-denominational dialogue and shared experience. It covers a diverse number of topics that show how Mary and Mariology are articulated within ecclesiastical contexts but also on their margins in popular devotion. Newly-commissioned essays describe some of the central ideas of Christian Marian thought, while also challenging popularly-held notions. This invaluable reference for students and scholars illustrates the current state of play in Marian Studies as it is done across the world.

Book Synopsis Delusions of Grandeur by : Charles Kimber
Download or read book Delusions of Grandeur written by Charles Kimber and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Kimber was an interesting character - an Eton and Balliol educated baronet, socialist, historian, market gardener, pig farmer, publican, and rally driver - with friends of all ages from all over the world who appreciated the scope of his knowledge, his kindness and his sense of humour. Some of this comes across in this intelligently written and insightful book. "When my father died, the day after this book was finished, we found a file on his laptop entitled 'Short cut to Funeral'. He asked to be dumped in a hole in the ground as cheaply as possible in the field behind his house, with a West Indian style wake where his friends would gather for good food and much drink to assess the character of the deceased fairly; good and bad, sinner and saint. I didn't carry out his wishes, mainly because I couldn't see myself asking the matron at Pershore hospital to load his corpse into the front seat of my car, or barrowing the cardboard biodegradable coffin he had stored in the roof of the cowshed across the field. So his ashes went there instead. The wake was a big party in a marquee." Kate Collingwood, daughter

Book Synopsis Image and Incarnation by : Walter Melion
Download or read book Image and Incarnation written by Walter Melion and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of the Incarnation was wellspring and catalyst for theories of images verbal, material, and spiritual. Section I, “Representing the Mystery of the Incarnation”, takes up questions about the representability of the mystery. Section II, “Imago Dei and the Incarnate Word”, investigates how Christ’s status as the image of God was seen to license images material and spiritual. Section III, “Literary Figurations of the Incarnation”, considers the verbal production of images contemplating the divine and human nature of Christ. Section IV, “Tranformative Analogies of Matter and Spirit”, delves into ways that material properties and processes, in their effects on the beholder, were analogized to Christ’s hypostasis. Section V, “Visualizing the Flesh of Christ”, considers the relation between the Incarnation and the Passion.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Grandeur by : Philip G. Cerny
Download or read book The Politics of Grandeur written by Philip G. Cerny and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-03-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: De Gaulle was the first major Western leader to pursue a foreign policy designed consistently to break the vicious circle of the Cold War and the straitjacket of the nuclear balance of terror between Russia and the United States. At the same time, he sought to establish in France a new set of institutions designed to break another vicious circle: that of the divisive conflicts between French social groups and political parties, which led to weak governments and an ineffective state. This book studies the link between these two aims, both by examining de Gaulle's political aims and style in a political and cultural context, and by looking first at French policy towards the Atlantic alliance, and then at the impact of de Gaulle's foreign policy on domestic politics. As a result, many of the orthodox notions about de Gaulle are questioned.
Book Synopsis Some Sort of Epic Grandeur by : Matthew J. Bruccoli
Download or read book Some Sort of Epic Grandeur written by Matthew J. Bruccoli and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Epic indeed, this is the definitive biography of Fitzgerald, plain and simple. There’s no reason to own another.” —Library Journal The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender Is the Night, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” These works and more elevated F. Scott Fitzgerald to his place as one of the most important American authors of the twentieth century. After struggling to become a screenwriter in Hollywood, Fitzgerald was working on The Last Tycoon when he died of a heart attack in 1940. He was only forty-four years old. Fitzgerald left behind his own mythology. He was a prince charming, a drunken author, a spoiled genius, the personification of the Jazz Age, and a sacrificial victim of the Depression. Here, Matthew J. Bruccoli strips away the façade of this flawed literary hero. He focuses on Fitzgerald as a writer by tracing the development of his major works and his professional career. Beginning with his Midwest upbringing and first published works as a teenager, this biography follows Fitzgerald’s life through the successful debut of This Side of Paradise, his turbulent marriage to Zelda Sayre, his time in Europe among The Lost Generation, the disappointing release of The Great Gatsby, and his ignominious fall. As former US poet laureate James Dickey said, “the spirit of the man is in the facts, and these, as gathered and marshalled by Bruccoli over thirty years, are all we will ever need. But more important, they are what we need.”
Book Synopsis St. Maximilian Kolbe by : Peter Damian Fehlner OFM Conv.
Download or read book St. Maximilian Kolbe written by Peter Damian Fehlner OFM Conv. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume six of the Collected Essays of Peter Damian Fehlner, entitled simply, St. Maximilian Kolbe, gathers together Fehlner's essays on the great Conventual Franciscan saint and martyr. These works come mainly from the journal founded by Kolbe, Miles Immaculatae, and were composed in the 1980s when Fehlner was editor of said journal. Readers of this volume will note the close connection to the themes of ecclesiological renewal and the Conventual Franciscan charism treated in volume five, as Fehlner worked to integrate and synthesize Kolbe's Mariological and pneumatological insights in a context of ecclesial mission and evangelization. The essays in this volume form a mosaic of Kolbean theology and spirituality, mapping out the geography of Fehlner's own theological itinerary that will reach, in terms of scholarly output, its final destination in his posthumous Theologian of Auschwitz (2019). Themes addressed, among others, in this volume include Kolbe's understanding of the history and unity of the Franciscan Order, the Trinity in relation to Immaculate Conception, creation and evolution, consecration, Kolbe's vision for Niepokalanow, Kolbe and the contemporary magisterium, and Kolbe's relevance for a contemporary retrieval of Bonaventure's theology of history.
