Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second English-language edition of the Small Fragment Set Manual was enthusiastically received and quickly went into a second printing. In preparing a third edition, we found it necessary to revise the text extensively and partly restructure it. The reasons for this are numerous. Experience of recent years has brought technical refinements in the operative treatment of many types of small fracture. Many of these changes stem from the small-fragment-set training programs conducted in Switzerland since 1980, and also from courses and symposia that have been held in other European countries and the United States. These events were occasions for a fruitful ex change of experience with surgeons who were critical of our methods. As a result of this exchange, we perceived a need both to revise our indications and to give greater attention to alternative techniques. We also felt it necessary to respond to criticisms of the first two editions concerning the catalog-like instrument lists and illustrations, and the attention given to fundamental techniques. Many surgeons who work or would like to work with small implants, especially those practicing abroad, are inexperienced in operations on the larger bones. It is imperative that these colleagues be given a basic introduction to the "biomechanical thinking" of the Swiss Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF).

Book excerpt: Nearly 50,000 Americans die from brain injuries annually, with approximately half of all Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) being transportation-related. TBI is a critical and ever-evolving safety topic, with equally important components of injury prevention, consequences, and treatment. This book is part of a 3-volume set which presents a comprehensive look at recent head injury research and focuses on head impact injuries and features 13 technical papers. These publications are primarily related to head impact and the resulting injury to the outside of the head – the skin, the bones of the skull, and sensory organs. Editor Jeffrey A. Pike has selected the most relevant technical papers spanning the early 1990s through the beginning of 2011, including several older papers which provide an essential historical perspective. Each volume in the series also includes a table of references arranged by topic and a new chapter tying together anatomy, injury, and injury mechanism topics. Buy the Set and Save! Head Injury Biomechanics The three-volume set consists of these individual volumes: Head Injury Biomechanics, Volume 1--The Skull Head Injury Biomechanics, Volume 2--The Brain Head Injury Biomechanics, Volume 3--Mitigation

Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book describes the injuries to the hand and wrist that are commonly encountered among participants in combat sports, explaining the mechanisms of injury and offering state of the art guidance on diagnosis and treatment. It covers both injuries characteristic of individual sports, such as kendo, karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, aikido, and mixed martial arts, and pathologies encountered across the full range of combat sports, including boxing, wrestling, and taekwondo. In addition to management, careful attention is paid to rehabilitation following injury and to psychological aspects of recovery from injury. The book is the result of a collaboration with the International Society for Sport Traumatology of the Hand (ISSPORTH) and has been designed to meet the needs of all practitioners who work with combat sports athletes. While especially helpful for surgeons, physicians, therapists, and rehabilitators, it will also be of value to coaches, trainers, and players. The authors are leading international experts in the field who have been involved with international societies and in some cases have personal experience of combat sports at a high level.
