C'est entre autres pour cette raison que l'enseignement systématique de la grammaire est prescrit dans les programmes d'études du primaire et du secondaire au Québec. La notion de sujet syntaxique est fondamentale dans le cursus grammatical, puisqu'elle a des impacts en écriture. Elle est enseignée dès le primaire et jusqu'à la fin du secondaire en suivant une progression. Quelles sont les connaissances d'élèves du secondaire à ce propos ? Évoluent-elles en cours d'année ? Ce sont là des questions qui nous ont intéressée dans le cadre de ce mémoire. Nous avons mené une recherche descriptive comparative à caractère exploratoire dans le but de décrire et de comparer les connaissances d'élèves de 1re et de 4e secondaire sur un cas bien précis de réalisation du sujet syntaxique et sur la description de l'évolution de ces connaissances en cours d'année. Nous avons analysé 194 tests (97 prétests et 97 posttests) administrés à des élèves d'un centre de services scolaire de la grande région de Québec. Dans ces tests, les élèves devaient justifier l'identification de sujets syntaxiques dans un énoncé donné en début et en fin d'année. L'analyse des données montre notamment que les connaissances évoluent en cours d'année, dans certains cas de façon moins marquée que d'autres. Pour bon nombre d'élèves, ces connaissances demeurent toutefois fragiles et sont toujours en construction, même à la fin du secondaire. Bien qu'elles ne soient employées que par un élève sur deux, les procédures issues de la grammaire rénovée conduisent les élèves à de meilleures justifications et à des réponses généralement justes.

Au Gabon, où nous avons réalisé notre investigation, les élèves éprouvent de difficultés à orthographier correctement des mots. C'est au constat de leurs faibles performances en orthographe que nous sommes parvenu à poser la problématique des erreurs d'orthographe au premier cycle du secondaire. Cette recherche vise à identifier et à classer, à partir de la typologie des erreurs de Catach (1980), les différentes erreurs d'orthographe que les jeunes scripteurs commettent dans leurs écrits. Pour, y parvenir, nous avons organisé, pour un échantillon de 783 élèves de 6e (lere année secondaire au Québec) et de 3 e (4eme année secondaire au Québec) de niveau collège du Gabon, une dictée et un entretien métacognitif tel que le conçoit Jaffré (1999 et 2003). Il en ressort, comme l'avaient déjà, ailleurs, démontré certaines études (Bétrix, 1991), que la zone morphogrammique, notamment la grammaire, reste celle qui serait la moins bien maîtrisée chez les jeunes scripteurs gabonais.

Part I brings together studies dealing with descriptive concepts. First examined is the notion of “accidens” in Latin grammar and its Greek counterparts. Other papers address questions with a strong echo in today’s linguistics: localism and its revival in recent semantics and syntax, the origin of the term “polysemy” and its adoption through Bréal, and the difficulties attending the description of prefabs, idioms and other “fixed expressions”. This first part also includes studies dealing with representations of linguistic phenomena, whether these concern the treatment of local varieties (so-called patois) in French research, or the import and epistemological function of spatial representations in descriptions of linguistic time. Or again, now taking the word “representation” literally, the visual display of grammatical relations, in the form of the first syntactic diagrams. Part II presents case studies which involve wider concerns, of a social nature: the “from below” approach to the history of Chinese Pidgin English underlines the social roles of speakers and the diversity of speech situations, while the scrutiny of Lhomond’s Latin and French textbooks demonstrates the interplay of pedagogical practice, cross-linguistic comparison and descriptive innovation. An overview of early descriptions of Central Australian languages reveals a whole spectrum of humanist to positivist and antihumanist stances during the colonial age. An overarching framework is also at play in the anthropological perspective championed by Meillet, whose socially and culturally oriented semantics is shown to live on in Benveniste. The volume ends with a paper on Trần Đức Thảo, whose work is an original synthesis between phenomenology and Marxist semiology, wielded against the “idealistic” doctrine of Saussure.
